Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative hosted its 21st annual Blue Ridge Fest at its headquarters in Pickens on Friday, bringing thousands of people 
from around the Upstate together for a night of classic music, classic cars, food and dancing to raise money for charity, headlined by a performance by The Spinners and highlighted by a visit from S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster. McMaster presented former Blue Ridge president and CEO Charles Dalton with the Blue Ridge Fest Founder’s Award, which will in the future be known as the Blue Ridge Fest Charles E. Fundraiser underway to help with shooting victim’s funeral

PICKENS — A fundraiser campaign is underway to pay for the funeral 
costs for a Pickens woman who was gunned down last month.
Robin Janette Smith, 39, was found dead in a driveway at 110 Sunny Lane in Pickens on the evening of April 28, according to a Pickens County Sheriff’s Office news release.
She had been shot multiple times, the release said.
Paul Scott Bennett, 58, of 110 Sunny Lane, has been charged with murder in Smith’s death, as well as possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is still being held without bond at the Pickens County Detention Center.

PCSO: No sign of crime in fire

CENTRAL — The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office investigation into a fire that destroyed a home near Central last week didn’t show any 
evidence of wrongdoing.
Chief deputy Creed Hashe said the sheriff’s office responded to the scene when the fire was first reported around noon May 1 at the house on Merck Road off Maw Bridge Road. Hashe said a request was made for the sheriff’s office to investigate.

Goat exposes four to rabies
COLUMBIA — Four people in Pickens County have been potentially exposed to rabies by a young goat that tested positive for the disease.
A statement released Tuesday by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control said the victims were exposed to rabies while giving general care to the goat. County council honors state wrestling champ

Cannon Auxiliary announces Harden Scholarship recipient

County to spend $105K to replace landfill compactor

PICKENS — Pickens County Council authorized the county administrator Monday to spend more than $100,000 to replace a vital piece of equipment at the county landfill.
County administrator Gerald Wilson said the waste compactor at the county’s construction and demolition landfill caught fire.
“It burned beyond the cost of repairing it,” Wilson said.
