Summer concert series continues this weekend
PICKENS — The city of Pickens’ annual spring and summer concert series continues this weekend and runs through the beginning of September.
The free events, which will be held at the amphitheater at 114 W. Main St., will run from 7-9 p.m.
This Saturday, June 23, the event will feature RetroVertigo.
The Jake Bartley Band will headline the city’s annual Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, July 4, and Jack

Courier Community Calendar 6-20-18
• Hagood Center set to host fundraiser
All are invited to the Hagood Center, located at 129 School House St. in Pickens, for a fundraiser this weekend. All proceeds from the event will go to the Hagood Center.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, visitors will able to enjoy an evening of singing and humor with Ron Grant, featuring country, gospel and rock and roll hits from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. Tickets will be $5 at the door.
• Lusk Memorial Golf Tournament planned
On Sept. 21, The Rock Golf Club and Resort will be the site of the first ever Logan Lusk Memorial Golf Tournament.
Lusk, who was killed last February in an auto accident, will have the event named in his honor. The tournament is a benefit for the Logan Lusk Memorial Scholarship at Lander University and high school seniors around Pickens County.
Registration and lunch will be at noon, with a captain’s choice format and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cost is $100 per person or $400 per team.

• Amazing Grace to hold early services
Amazing Grace Lutheran Church invites the public to visit Sunday morning for worship and fellowship at 8:45 a.m. The services are held in the Dillard chapel, located at 2402 Gentry Memorial Highway in Pickens.
Not your stereotypical green beans

In the South, when people talk about green beans they usually are talking about the standard, traditional way of bean preparation. And yes, they are good.
But there’s more than one way to cook a bean, and it’s fun to venture out.
Beans don’t have to be cooked to death until they’re limp and low in the pot.
One of the recipes today comes from India, the green beans with mustard seed and grated ginger. Before assuming you won’t like it, taste it.
That was always the rule at Mama’s table. You can’t say you don’t like if you’ve never tried it, so I encourage you all to make an informed decision. Enjoy.
