County announces anniversary events

COUNTY — Pickens County has a full slate of events celebrating the county’s 150th anniversary planned.

Tourism director Jay Pitts began his presentation at Monday’s county council meeting by touching on some of the sesquicentennial events that have already taken place.

Ground broken on Appalachian Heritage Center

PICKENS — Events at the Hagood Mill will no longer be at the mercy of the elements, once the site’s newest addition is completed.

County officials broke ground May 30 on the Appalachian Heritage Center.

“It’s a great day in Pickens County, another part of our celebration of 150 years,” county council chairman Roy Costner said of the county’s 2018 sesquicentennial, before making a confession. “Before I got on to council, I didn’t know that much about Hagood Mill. I really didn’t.”

Jones introduced as new Easley basketball coach

EASLEY — Friday evening opened a new era of Easley High School boys’ basketball, as Mike Jones was named the head coach of the Green Wave in front of members of the Easley community.

Jones was selected following a lengthy search due to his 25 years of collegiate coaching experience at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NAIA and NJCAA levels.

Prior to taking the Easley job, Jones was the head basketball coach at Tusculum College

High school juniors graduate from Junior Leadership Pickens County

EASLEY — On May 17, 25 local high school juniors graduated from Junior Leadership Pickens County Class VI.

All four high schools in Pickens County — Daniel, Easley, Liberty and Pickens — were represented in the JLPC graduating class.

Presented by Baptist Easley Hospital and facilitated by a volunteer advisory board of local business leaders, JLPC assists

1 injured in school bus wreck

DACUSVILLE — One person was taken to the hospital, but there were no other injuries reported after a school bus accident Thursday morning in Pickens County.

School district spokesman John Eby said the accident took place around 11:45 a.m. on Albatross Road near Jim Hunt Road in the Dacusville area. Eby said the special needs bus was carrying the driver, a bus companion and two students.

District offering summer meals

PICKENS — Beginning Monday and continuing through Aug. 3, the School District of Pickens County will again be offering a summer feeding program for children.

District nutritional services manager Jenaffer Pitt said the district is offering three summer feeding sites.

“We will have one in Pickens, one in Easley and one in Liberty,” Pitt said.

Clemson museum planning yard sale

CLEMSON — The Clemson Area African American Museum will be hosting an event organizers are calling the “biggest yard sale ever” on Saturday, June 16.

The event will take place at the Calhoun Bridge Center at 214 Butler St. in Clemson and will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Donations are welcome and are to be dropped off at the museum during opening hours.

Money laundering made easier

Money laundering had its origins with crime syndicates. Former SLED chief Robert Stewart said that one of the dangers of South Carolina’s legalization of video poker was that it provided a statewide network of money laundromats.

Seniors go hungry

I just-released report paints a grim picture about the number of seniors age 60 and older who don’t get enough to eat. “The State of Senior Hunger in America” shows that while those numbers have decreased slightly, they’re still above the rate from 2007.
