Police: Man moved, left 17 dogs

CLEMSON — A man whose request to house six times Clemson’s allowed number of dogs on his property was rejected last month was arrested last week after police said he moved away and left more than a dozen puppies behind with no food or water.

Frederick Harrison Towe, 48, is charged with ill treatment of animals. He was arrested Thursday and later released on bond from the Clemson City Jail.

The Clemson Board of Zoning Appeals rejected Towe’s request last month to house 18 dogs on his property on Frontage Road. The maximum number of dogs allowed by city regulations is three.

In addition to live music, fun and fireworks, those in attendance at downtown Easley’s annual Fourth of July celebration last week were given even more cause to rejoice when NuSound roadie Corey Alexander took to the stage to propose to his girlfriend, Elizabeth Miller. SCDOT plans $4.5M in work on local roads

COUNTY — As part of the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s 10-Year Plan to Rebuild S.C.’s Roads campaign, the agency plans to dramatically increase its paving program across the state.

“For the first time in the agency’s history, the total amount of road and bridge work underway on the state’s highways has exceeded $3 billion,” a release issued by SCDOT last week said.

Annual humane society tourney planned

PICKENS — The Pickens County Humane Society has been serving animals and helping the community for 47 years, and several events are in the works to help keep the organization going.

The society’s fifth annual golf tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Pickens Country Club, PCHS executive director Samantha Gamble said.

“It’s always a good day, it’s always a fun day,” she said.

The tournament has a 9 a.m. captain’s choice shotgun start.

The cost is $75 per person for a four-member team.

Woman dies after being hit by vehicle

EASLEY — An Easley woman died after being struck by a car Monday night.

Claudia Dawn McGilvery, 59, of Taberwood Road, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday at Greenville Memorial Hospital, Pickens County deputy coroner Gary Duncan said.

McGilvery was walking across East Main Street in Easley at 10:30 p.m. Monday night when she was struck by a car traveling south, Duncan said.

The Easley Police Department is investigating.

 

French festival at SWU Saturday to benefit nonprofit horse farm

CENTRAL — Southern Wesleyan University will host a festival celebrating all things French this weekend.

 Bastille Days Greenville will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday on the Square at the university.

The festival is a fundraiser for Black Sheep Farm, which recently relocated to Liberty.

“We are a horse-assisted educational nonprofit,” Black Sheep executive director Deborah Dunlap said.

Saturday’s festival will be the fourth Bastille Days held in the Upstate.
