WILLIAM A. “BUTCH” WALDROP

LIBERTY — William Allen “Butch” Waldrop, 65, of 110 Byrnes St., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Clyde and Betty Carver Waldrop. Butch enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping. He was a member of Liberty Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Gossett of Anderson and Kendall Waldrop of Panama City, Fla.; a son, Kevin Waldrop of Liberty; two sisters, Selena Moore of Liberty and Debra Loggins of Gaffney; a brother, Larry

Smith’s Blue Flame counting on success after year of work

PICKENS — The Pickens Blue Flame enter the 2018 season with hope on the horizon.

Second-year head coach Chad Smith is coming off a disappointing first season, as the Blue Flame finished 2-8 and winless in Region I-4A. However, Smith is looking to take the experiences from last season to complete the rebuild at his alma mater.

LIBERTY — Youth and inexperience serve you well in football if it breeds hunger and excitement.

The 2018 edition of the Liberty Red Devils aim to put that formula to use as they embark on a formidable schedule in Region I-3A, a classification higher after a realignment in place until at least 2020.

After back-to-back 5-6 finishes, Green Wave aiming higher in 2018

EASLEY — The Easley Green Wave are hoping for a reversal of the 2017 season.

Last season, the Green Wave battled major injuries on an almost week-by-week basis and finished a second consecutive season with a 5-6 record.

The Green Wave did advance to the Class 5A playoffs, losing to Gaffney, a team that advanced to the state title game.

Easley had significant losses from the defensive line from last season and in the secondary. Add in do-it-all kicker Nathan Baker, a Limestone College signee, and there are opportunities for playing time on this year’s team.

Lions looking to bounce back after disappointing ‘17

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions had one of their worst seasons in recent memory in 2017. Coming off an above-average season in coach Jeff Fruster’s first year at the helm, the Lions had no idea of the adversity they would face last season, as they finished just 2-9.

However, Fruster believes the lessons learned from last season’s debacle will put the Lions back on the right track as he enters his third season as coach.

“I learned quite a bit from last season,” Fruster said. “Last year we had to deal with adversity, we learned about falling short of our goals, but there were also positives to be taken away from last year.
