Gillespie records 1,000th assist
PICKENS — Kaylee Gillespie, a junior setter for the Pickens High School Lady Blue Flame volleyball team, recorded career assist No. 
1,000 against Riverside recently.
She accumulated 943 assists during her freshman and sophomore year.
Gillespie had no clue she was close to setting a personal career record, but the coaches, team and many fans knew it. Everyone was holding their breath, hoping each kill would be her 1,000th assist.

Penalties, turnovers doom Pickens against Green Wave

PICKENS — What better way is there for a high school football team 
to start its season than by squaring off in mid-August against its biggest traditional rival?
The Pickens Blue Flame may have come up short, 13-7, to the Easley Green Wave on Friday night, but there were many moments in the action that the Flame faithful can look back to with optimism for a good year ahead.
Pickens’ Bill Isaacs Field was electric on Friday night, with the stands full on both sides. Excitement was in the air with the anticipation of seeing what Pickens and Easley had to offer.
Even though the game started sloppy with lots of yellow penalty flags in the air, Pickens head coach Chad Smith was proud of his team. Smith managed to retain his composure as the calls were not going in

Liberty shows fight in shutout loss at county foe Daniel

CENTRAL — The Liberty Red Devils traveled to Daniel’s Singleton Field to kick off the 2018 season on Friday night, but could not match the high-powered Lion offense in a 38-0 loss.
With a smaller roster and less depth, Liberty faced many struggles throughout the game, but the Devils were able to tie together some longer drives as the team developed some rhythm.

Easley survives Blue Flame in ugly game to stretch rivalry win streak

PICKENS — The annual county rivalry between Pickens and Easley turned out to be a barn-burner Friday night at Bill Isaacs Field, with the visiting Green Wave holding on for a hard-fought 13-7 win over the Blue Flame.
The win was the eighth in a row for the Green Wave in the series. Late in the game, it looked like that streak may come to an end.
But the Green Wave’s Dylan Lyda and Roderick Isham were able to corral Pickens’ Brady Batson for a two-yard loss on a third-down play with 2:59 left to force a punt.

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions started the 2018 season with a boom, 
taking a convincing 38-0 win against the Liberty Red Devils.
