Honoring a local legend
Easley to dedicate stadium for former coach, mayor
EASLEY — Excitement is in the air across Pickens County, as the high school football season will kick off this Friday night with Easley traveling to Pickens and Daniel hosting Liberty.
But the emotion may be even higher next week at Easley High School, as the school will show its respect for a local legend, dedicating the school’s football stadium in honor of William A. “Bill” Carr before the Green Wave’s home opener against county rival Daniel.
Carr, who served as Easley’s head coach from 1957 to 1967 and was later elected mayor of the city, died at age 86 in 2012.
School District of Pickens County officials approved a proposal from Easley principal Gary Culler in January to name the school’s football stadium after the legendary coach, teacher, businessman and civic leader.
“(Carr) was a man that led and inspired students and young adults to apply themselves and excel beyond their dreams,” a fundraising brochure for the new stadium signage said. “He brought the city of Easley together as few people have and made our community into a household name that was

Man found dead after Liberty fire

LIBERTY — A 66-year-old Liberty man was found dead after a fire at his home Thursday morning.
Pickens County coroner Kandy Kelley identified the victim as Arnold Barry Case Sr.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a joint investigation with the Liberty Fire Department on the structure fire at 401 Morning Dew Court, according to a news release from sheriff’s office chief deputy Creed Hashe.
The fire was reported at 11:20 a.m. Thursday. The caller said the home was on fire and that an occupant may have been trapped inside, Hashe said.

Online learning to replace SDPC makeup days

PICKENS — Starting with the upcoming school year, Pickens County students will no longer have to see their academic year extended to make up for inclement weather.
The school district formally announced Wednesday that it will pilot the eLearning program this year. As a result, students will be able to make up inclement weather days by completing assignments online.
“This is a change that I think our parents and students will be excited about, and I’m very grateful to the (Education Oversight Committee) for working with us to make it happen,” School District of Pickens County superintendent Danny Merck said. “The uncertainty surrounding inclement weather days has always been an issue as parents make plans,

Liberty city administrator set to retire

LIBERTY — Liberty city administrator Shirley Hughes will be retiring at the end of the year.
Mayor Brian Petersen said Hughes submitted her resignation in a letter to the mayor and council Aug. 1.
Petersen said Tuesday that Hughes’ resignation is “purely driven by her functional and actual retirement.”
“The reality is it’s just time,” Petersen said.
He said Hughes wants to devote more time to her family and plans to move

Pickens veteran receives Quilt of Valor for service

PICKENS — Larry Porter is no stranger to the cold.
As a private first class in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Porter was 
not given winter clothing for some reason.
“I didn’t have snowpacks,” Porter said. “I couldn’t get gloves.”
One night, two of his friends had to roll over on top of Porter to keep him from freezing.
Another night, Porter put a transistor radio in the bottom of his sleeping bag, using the heat generated by it to help stave off the cold.
Because of the extreme cold, to this day, Porter has trouble with his hands.
Despite that, he worked as a mechanic after leaving the service.
“I’ve done a little bit of everything,” he said.
Last week, the 90-year-old Porter received a special thanks for his service

Back from Kenya
Friends and relatives are happy to know one of our Pickens County young ladies, who graduated from Easley High School in 2015, is home from 
Kenya, Africa. Emily Renee Pilgrim has been there completing an internship. Now home, Pilgrim plans to return to the University of South Carolina to complete her biology degree. She is the daughter of Phillip and Shirley Pilgrim of Easley. Her grandmother, Jesnut Mullinax, said she is very happy to have her back home in the United States.
