PICKENS — The Pickens Blue Flame have the first five games of the 2018 season in the books and despite some tough losses, PHS head coach and athletic director Chad Smith believes his team is ready to make a run in Region I-4A.
Smith says his kids are ready to start the tough road ahead.
“Our kids are getting better every week,” he said. “If we continue to improve and erase mistakes in critical situations, then we will be a difficult team to contend with going forward.”
The Flame played a great game against Berea two weeks ago, mounting 461

LIBERTY — The Liberty Red Devils have reached the midpoint of their season and had a bye week last week to rest up for the region schedule ahead.
With a 3-2 record through the non-region schedule, the Red Devils have seen steady improvement week to week with their gameplay.
Many of the concerns LHS coach Kyle Stewart has addressed in post-game interviews have been a clear area of emphasis in practice or game prep the following week. This has led to much cleaner gameplay as Liberty heads into its first

GREENVILLE — It wasn’t pretty, but all that mattered Friday night for the Easley Green Wave is that they got a region win against J.L. Mann, 21-13.
Senior tailback Jeremy Harried rushed for 243 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also had another 64-yard touchdown nullified due to penalty.
Speaking of penalties, the officials probably had to ice their arms down after the game, as 24 penalties were accepted during the game, not counting several flags that were called but refused.
“That (game) had a little bit of everything,” Easley coach John Windham said. “It was crazy. We got the lead and they came back and scored. Then we got the lead again. The last drive, we had three big runs that were called back for holding. We had been running the same play, but all of a sudden they called us for holding. Those were tough calls. I was proud of the guys for the way they fought. It

CENTRAL — The 2018 Daniel Lions have exceeded almost all expectations put in front of them as they prepare to enter region play.
Coming off a disappointing 2-9 season, many expected the Lions to improve, but the turnaround to this point has been incredible.
Third-year head coach Jeff Fruster, the man behind the turnaround, has seemingly made the right decisions on many of the necessary changes following last year’s washout. After an abysmal season offensively, Fruster and athletic director Tommy Plumblee brought

CLEMSON — It’s Trevor time in Death Valley.
Clemson announced Monday that freshman Trevor Lawrence has been named the Tigers’ starting quarterback for their game Saturday (noon, ABC) against Syracuse, replacing senior Kelly Bryant.
Lawrence has played in all four games for third-ranked Clemson (4-0, 1-0 ACC) so far, splitting time with Bryant, and the freshman from Cartersville, Ga., has looked the part of his No. 1 overall high school recruit ranking.
His latest performance was against Georgia Tech on Saturday, when he sprung the Tigers’ offense to life and completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-21 win over the Yellow Jackets.
Now, he’s earned the starting job — for now.
“After four games, when you look at both of (the quarterbacks), they both have played well, done a lot for us, but it just came down to, you’ve got to reward productivity,” co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said Monday. “And if you look at his opportunities, he’s taken advantage of them. Kelly didn’t do anything wrong.
“It’s not a lifetime contract. He’s got to prove it in practice, he’s got to prove it in the next game, and when Kelly gets his opportunities, he’ll
