Police: Wife killed man as he slept

LIBERTY — A Liberty woman is charged with murder after investigators 
say she shot and killed her husband as he slept Sunday morning.
Tracy Broom Posey walked into the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office at 7:20 a.m. Sunday morning and told authorities her husband, 30-year-old Justin Dale Posey, had been shot inside their home, chief deputy Creed Hashe said in a news release.
Posey said she believed her husband was dead, the release said.
Deputies arrived at the couple’s residence at 145 Posey Hill Road and found Justin Posey inside “with trauma to the head characteristic of what is typically seen with a gunshot wound,” Hashe said.

Inmates charged in escape

PICKENS — An inmate who briefly escaped the Pickens County Prison along with another inmate who was shot dead by a nearby homeowner last week is facing more charges related to the escape, and a third inmate has also been charged in connection with the case.
Timothy Cleveland Dill, 32, and Bruce Webb McLaughlin Jr., 30, escaped from the prison around 2:35 a.m. Dec. 4 after assaulting two detention

Whooping cough case confirmed
EASLEY — School District of Pickens County officials said last week a case of whooping cough had been identified at Crosswell Elementary School in Easley.
In a letter sent to parents by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Upstate DHEC regional medical director Dr. Tracy Murphy said anyone who attended or visited the school between Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 may have been exposed to the disease.

Final parades this weekend
COUNTY — The Pickens County Christmas parade season will come to a close this weekend, but with two events scheduled at different times than they were originally planned.
After winter weather forced its postponement last weekend, Dacusville has scheduled its “Christmas in the Country” parade for 2 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 15.
The city of Easley’s Christmas “Parade of Lights” was also scheduled for last Saturday but has been canceled after the weekend winter storm.

Storm cancels school, knocks out power for thousands
COUNTY — Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative and Duke Energy officials were still working Tuesday to restore power to local residents affected by a weekend winter storm.
The storm dropped up to eight inches of snow and ice on parts of Pickens County, according to Scott Krentz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Greer office.

Liberty officials recognize community

LIBERTY — A Liberty neighborhood was recognized Monday for its beautification efforts.
“That’s what our people in Liberty do,” Mayor Brian Petersen said. “We come together and we make things happen. This is a great testament to that.”
Petersen and city council members recognized the Liberty Hills community during council’s December meeting.
Petersen read a mayoral proclamation presenting community residents with a Community Pride Award.
The Liberty Hills community is on U.S. Highway 178, headed toward U.S.

Capital City Chorale set to performed at performing arts center

Liberty High improv group plans show
LIBERTY — Liberty High School’s improv troup will combine Christmas cheer and Christmas comedy this week.
Walking Shadows director David Holland said Friday’s show is the “Second Annual Christmas Special to End All Christmas Specials.”
The show starts at 7 p.m. at Liberty High School.
“We’re doing something a little different this year,” Holland said. “We’re adding a long narrative to kind of connect the whole show together.”
The show will “explore Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas future,” he said.

County recycling centers set to open day after Christmas
PICKENS — All Pickens County recycling centers will be open on Wednesday, Dec. 26, county officials announced recently. The centers stopped opening on Wednesdays in July.
The Wednesday opening will be only for the day after Christmas, and centers will resume Wednesday closing on Jan. 2.
