Pickens High School golfers sign with SWU
PICKENS — Pickens High School golfers Sarah Page and Rachel Page recently signed scholarships to play golf next year at Southern Wesleyan University.
SWU head coach Joey Maxon and the women’s golf program announced the signing of the Pickens golfers for the 2019 class on Dec. 4.
“Sarah has a great natural golf ability and is excited to play college golf, and when you combine those things, then the sky’s the limit,” Maxon said. “She is tremendous in the classroom,

Rocky Bottom Baptist honored by blind camp
Rocky Bottom Baptist Church in Sunset was honored at the Christmas dinner Dec. 1 at the Rocky Bottom Camp of the Blind. Rocky Bottom Baptist Church helped with roof repairs on several buildings at the camp. Pastor Chris Owens, left, said of the work, ‘this is part of the local ministry good neighbor policy.” Chairman and president of the State Board of the Blind, Frank Chapple from Columbia recognized the church with a plaque and thanked Frank and Jimmy Masters for their extra volunteer work. The Rocky Bottom Camp and Conference Center is used by the State Foundation of the Blind and open to the public. Linda Bible serves as camp director.

JEAN O. SORRELLS
LIBERTY — Jean Owens Sorrells, 86, wife of the late James Lewis Sorrells, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018.
Mrs. Sorrells was born in Pickens County, daughter of the late Ivester C. and Grace Ward Owens. She was a homemaker and a member of Elljean Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Pam Sorrells Senn (Delma) and Kim Sorrells Masters (Roger), all of Pickens; grandchildren, Jason Burgess (Sherry), Justin Burgess (Diana), Jessie Gillespie (Darren) and Kayla
McKinney Chapel Christmas program planned Saturday
SUNSET — The long-ago story of a miracle in a stable in Bethlehem will be told again at McKinney Chapel, in Pickens County’s Eastatoee Valley, this Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m.
It’s a traditional gift to everyone who comes to the tiny old church, and everyone is invited.
For more than three decades, since the abandoned frame chapel was restored by Georgia Chapman in the early 1980s, the old-time pageant, with Mary and Joseph and the Baby Jesus, the angels, shepherds and wise men, the harmonica player and country-bred singers with the classic Sunday School piano, has offered its time-honored message. Boy Scout Troop 51 enjoys 78th birthday
PICKENS — November ushered in the 78th birthday of Pickens Boy Scout Troop 51, and the troop celebrated in typical fashion with a chili supper during a weekend campout.
Lodge pots filled with chili, cornbread and s’mores cooked under the campfire coals while the boys and their families laughed, played football and reminisced about their years in the troop. Since its inception, the troop has been a positive influence in the lives of hundreds of young men, including current Scout Master Perry Gravely, who himself became an Eagle Scout with Troop 51 in 1975.

Post 11 honors council for Veterans Day efforts
During the Dec. 3 Pickens County Council meeting, American Legion Pickens Post 11 gave a “Letter of Appreciation Award” to county council for the very successful recent Veterans Day celebration and parade in Liberty. The event featured Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. Davey Hiott, American Legion riders and Pickens Jeep Club members participating to honor county service veterans. Handing the award over to council were Post 11 chaplain Capt. Gary Parsons with fellow Legionnaires Richard Reese, Pete Peters, Randall Wood, Terrance Gromlovits, Michael Keith and Joe Acampora.

Amazing Grace Fellowship, located at 229 Pearl St. in Pickens, will be hosting a Christmas program called “What Child is this” on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend and worship and enjoy the Christmas season.

Holiday compotes to serve with cheeses

No party is complete without a cheese platter, and when I think of cheese my mind goes to compotes, especially during the holidays.
Compotes are flavorful and compliment many varieties of cheeses. Not only are they good as an appetizer, but also make a great snack for winter afternoon football games on TV, watched with friends.
You may not like all of these, but odds are you will, so enjoy.
Pickens Rec teams shine in state, district tourneys
PICKENS — The SCRPA SCAP state volleyball championships were held Saturday, Nov. 17, in Hartsville at Hartsville Middle School and Byerly Park – TB Thomas Sports Center.
The 9U, 12U and 14U Pickens Recreation teams all won their respective age divisions. Pickens 9U defeated Westminster and Simpsonville to win the title, while the 12U team defeated Lancaster 1 and Westminster, and 14U beat Jasper County and Simpsonville.
The coaches and players would like to thank those who made the trip to Hartsville to support their efforts.
The Pickens Rec 8U and 15U soccer teams also each won their respective Western District
