What’s seniors’ No. 1 reason for ER visits?
A recent study revealed that the number of deaths from senior falls has tripled. This is not new. A 2015 study also concluded that the number of falls was increasing, even when America’s growing senior population was taken into account.
For those over age 65, falls are the leading reason we go to the emergency room. Falls can start a vicious cycle: A simple fracture or brain injury can lead to hospitalization, which can bring its own problems, such as catching an infection or becoming weak from staying in bed. Easley FIRST Lego League team competes at invitational
EASLEY — A FIRST Lego League robotics team from Easley, the Thunderbolts, competed at the FIRST Lego League Razorback International Invitational at the University of Arkansas from May 17-19.
The Thunderbolts are one of many teams sponsored by BOSCH Anderson. CENTRAL — Verna Marie Rocco, 79, passed from this life Thursday, June 20, 2019, at her home.
Born in New Castle, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Kenneth L. Book Sr. and the late Georgetta Clark Book.
Verna was of the Catholic faith, enjoyed playing bingo, was a vendor at the Anderson Jockey Lot and an avid news watcher, and she loved her family.

Fourth of July events planned across county

COUNTY — As Independence Day nears, Pickens County is preparing for a number of events celebrating America’s oldest holiday.
Clemson will kick off the festivities on July 3 with the 26th annual ClemsonFest. The event
will be held at Spittoono field, located at 1569 Eighteen Mile Road in Central. The cost of the event is $5 per person or $10 per carload.
The gate will open at 5 p.m., and the festival will continue until 10 p.m. Carolina Coast Band will provide live entertainment starting at 6 p.m. and will continue until the fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. Following the fireworks, the band will continue to play until close.
According to organizers, problems with entry and exit that affected last year’s event have been remedied this year, as three gates will be open to get attendees inside and parked smoothly. At least 1,750 cars will be able to park on the grounds — 75 percent more than last year. More information

‘Hee Haw’ play at Senior Center sells out, encore set for July 13
PICKENS — A play based on popular 1970s and ‘80s TV show “Hee Haw” was a smash hit on June 8 at the Pickens Senior Center.
So much so that that more than 50 people had to be turned away from the jam-packed
auditorium at the the center, located on School House Road in Pickens.
As a result of the incredible response, officials at the center have announced an encore presentation Saturday, July 13, starting at 7 p.m.

Hope for Homeless Bash set Saturday in Pickens
PICKENS — An event planned this weekend in Pickens will help raise money for a shelter to help Pickens County’s homeless population.
