‘Trick or Treat on Main’ is now ‘Halloween Hootenanny’

PICKENS — Pickens’ Trick or Treat on Main, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, from 5-9 p.m., is taking on a new form for the 2019 Halloween season.

This year, the celebration will offer more of a party and festival atmosphere. “Trick or Treat on Main” is morphing into the “Pickens Halloween Hootenanny” and will take place at the Pickens amphitheater.

According to Wikipedia, “hootenanny” is an old country word for “party,” and that is what will be happening, a party/festival, with many activities happening at once. There will be booths, just like before, and they will be spread throughout the amphitheater grounds. The booths, again sponsored by local merchants and organizations, will have Halloween-themed activities and games, handing out candy and prizes. There will also be a bouncy house obstacle

Steaks make a great

When it’s time to tailgate, there aren’t many options better than grilling steak. And there are a few basic rules to apply to all steak grilling projects.

Never put a steak on a cold grill. Get the grill hot before starting. Leave the steak out of the refrigerator for 30 minutes before grilling. Let the steak rest, loosely covered with foil, after cooking. When you take the steak off the grill, put it on a platter that has been heated. Keeping the hot stuff hot is important.

Never leave the grill unattended. That’s about the size of it. Oh, and buy the best quality meat you can find. Cheap meat is never really a bargain. Go team!

PICKENS — Entering year three of the Chad Smith era at Pickens, the Blue Flame are hoping to continue to build on last season’s successes and learn from last year’s miscues.

The Blue Flame finished 4-7 in 2018, a step up from a two-win rebuilding season the year before, and even made it to the playoffs, losing on the road against eventual state runner-up Greer 35-6 in the first round.

However, the Blue Flame still have plenty of work to do. Last season’s Flame lost three games by one score or less before finally overcoming their late-game demons against Palmetto to clinch their spot in the playoffs. This year’s team will face an uphill battle in one of the toughest regions in the state following the loss of a talented group of seniors and star wing Brady Batson, who is

After Upper State berth, Lions looking to sustain success

By Bru Nimmons

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions enter the 2019 football season in the best place they’ve been in nearly half a decade.

Following a return to form 2018 season in which the Lions went 11-2 on their way to the Upper State championship game, expectations remain high for Daniel, and with top players back on both sides of the ball and coach Jeff Fruster entering his fourth year, the Lions don’t expect their renaissance to end any time soon.

The Lions are in a much different spot than they were this time last season, when they were trying to find answers after finishing 2-9 in 2017 and barely squeaking their way into the playoffs. Now, with a taste of success and ever-growing expectations, Fruster continues to push the approach that drove his team last season.

When asked whether the Lions’ success will change anything this season, Fruster was
