Despite struggles, Devils make playoffs for fifth straight year

LIBERTY — The 2019 season was one of ups and downs for the Liberty Red Devils.
Facing a numbers disadvantage against nearly every team on the schedule, the Red Devils struggled early in the season before an offensive scheme change rejuvenated them and led them to their fifth consecutive playoff berth.
The Red Devils opened the season hosting country rival Daniel. Liberty fought hard but couldn’t match the Lions’ explosive offense as they fell 44-0 in a shutout loss.
The next week, the Red Devils looked to rebound against the Berea

After disappointing finish, Flame already focused on getting better next season

PICKENS — The Pickens High School football team finished a rocky year with a record of 2-8 and a winless 0-5 mark in region play.
Though this season was a step back from last year’s team, which qualified for the playoffs, the results can be chalked up to a number of unlucky injuries, depth issues, turnovers and an inability to maintain leads.
The Blue Flame held leads in six of their 10 games this year, but just could not sustain them as the games continued on. The team also spent most of the year without team captain Brady Batson, last season’s leading rusher, following an offseason injury.
The team was led by sophomore Jamorea Keith and senior Zach Hollman, who saw action as rushers and as defenders. The two accounted for a majority of the team’s touchdowns, and both had a healthy number of defensive statistics as well.
