They had to play three tough opponents to come home with the gold — beating a squad from Seneca and two from Walhalla. “The kids played their hearts out,” Aleman said. Blue Flame drop final game of year

PICKENS — The Pickens Blue Flame’s season came to end on Friday night with a 42-20 loss to region foe Palmetto at Bill Isaacs Field in Pickens.
Despite the lopsided loss, the game was much closer than the final score indicated, as the Big Blue never stopped fighting until the final whistle was blown.
“They never quit,” Pickens head coach Chad Smith said. “We have great kids. We just made too many mistakes. That has kind of been the story of the season. We play hard, but made too many mistakes throughout. That is our job as coaches to fix, and we will fix it.”
Statistically, the game appeared much closer than the final score indicated. In total offense, Pickens racked up 338 yards to Palmetto’s 346. In addition, time of possession was squarely on Pickens’ side as the Blue Flame had the ball for 33:02, compared to the

Liberty turns focus to playoffs after falling to Powdersville in regular-season finale

LIBERTY — The Liberty Red Devils didn’t get the senior night ending they wanted as they fell to the Powdersville Patriots 28-7 in their regular-season finale on Friday night.
Liberty is now 3-7 as it faces the daunting task of hitting the road for the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs to take on undefeated Chapman this Friday.
At kickoff of last week’s game at home against Powdersville, the temperature was a crisp 56 degrees with clear skies and no wind.
Powdersville jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a pair of long Thomas Williams touchdown runs before Liberty came back to make it a one-score game in the second quarter with a 22-yard pass from E.J. Stafford to Aaron Spruill.
The Patriots then added to their lead with a pair of interception return scores in the third quarter to make the final score 28-7.
Red Devils head coach Kyle Stewart said one of the most glaring problems for his team was its play up front, which he chalked up to depth issues. Only 19 players saw the field for Liberty in the game.
“Throughout the ball game, we struggled to control the line of scrimmage, which has

Laurens scores early, often to spoil Easley senior night
By Eugene Jolley
Courier Sports

EASLEY — Laurens showed why the Raiders are the Region I-5A champions Friday night, spoiling Easley’s senior night with a 63-29 beating and putting a disappointing end to the Green Wave’s season.
The Raiders were led by Shrine Bowl linebacker Duane Martin, a Louisville verbal commit. Martin broke up two passes, had a pressure that led to an interception, picked off a pass after tipping it to himself and blocked an extra-point kick. That’s not to mention the impact he made on offense, scoring a touchdown from the A-back position.
“He’s an incredible player,” Easley coach Caleb King said of Martin. “There’s a reason why he has multiple Division I offers. He’s committed to Louisville and is playing in the Shrine Bowl, and there is a reason for it.”
Easley (3-7, 2-5) was hoping for better results as 17 seniors played their last game as a Green Wave, but Laurens scored on the first five series of the game to take control in the first half.
Easley reached Laurens territory three times and didn’t score in the first half, including on its

Lions survive BHP to finish regular season unbeaten, win region for first time since ‘13
bnimmons@thepccourier.com
BELTON — No strangers to close games and crazy comebacks this season, the Daniel Lions entered Friday night’s game against the Belton-Honea Path Bears hoping to secure their first undefeated regular season and region title since 2013.
The Lions seemed poised to do just that, jumping out to a 24-7 lead at the start of the second half before the lead dissipated to just 31-28 in the waning minutes.
With the Bears driving down to the Daniel 9-yard line, things looked dire for the Lions. However, a strong pass rush and a monumental grounding penalty deflated the comeback efforts as Daniel escaped with a 31-28 victory.
“I feel like our kids are used to quite a bit of adversity at this point,” Daniel coach Jeff

CLEMSON — Travis Etienne had a record-setting day, and Clemson was once again dominant on both sides of the ball as the No. 4 Tigers took care of business against Wofford on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Behind Clemson’s sixth-highest total yardage output ever — 702 yards — the Tigers beat the Terriers 59-14 to win their 24th straight game.
Etienne, a junior running back, recorded a career-high 212 rushing yards on nine carries with two rushing touchdowns, and his two scores pushed his career total to 48, breaking James Davis’ school record (47 from 2005-
