String up the lights, no matter the fight
Last year there was a problem when I put the lights on and around the Christmas tree. I started at the top and worked down. Unfortunately, once finished, I found that the bottom strand of lights had no plug, so they 
couldn’t be lit. So then I had to take them all down and start over in reverse. This was discouraging, but it’s important to never give up on matters like this.
It was not a disaster. It was an inconvenience. So we did what had to be done.

Higher taxes and fire fees
Dear Editor,
Over the past year, county officials proposed and county council discussed a plan to radically change the structure of fire protection in Pickens County. For decades, we had 13 local fire districts with a chief and a local board for each district. Most districts charged only a fire fee on homes, and a few charged millage on all property.
Their plan is to abolish all the 13 fire boards, have one centralized board, the county to take ownership of all fire equipment and charge a 30-mill fire tax on all property. The benefits they cite are centralized management, streamline operations, build a comprehensive capital plan, more manpower and better training. They also say it will save money, but looking at the proposal, that is not true and they need to be upfront and honest with the

Winter Bluegrass Jubilee set for next month in Pickens
PICKENS — The Young Appalachian Musicians (YAM) will hold its annual indoor music festival, the Winter 
Bluegrass Jubilee, on Jan. 25 at Pickens High School.
This year’s jubilee promises to be the best year yet, with a full day of performances, jamming, dancing, workshops, vendors and food.
This year’s band lineup includes Sister Sadie, Carolina Blue, ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, West End String Band, New Dixie Storm, Young Appalachian Musicians school groups, Sweet Potato Pie

Davis Brothers Grading and Septic Tank now open
PICKENS — Brothers Joe and Tom Davis have partnered to open a grading, hauling and septic tank installation 
and repair business.
“I’ve been in the grading and hauling business for 20 years, and I’ve teamed up with my brother to expand our services,” Joe Davis said.
Davis Brothers grades for homesites, road-building and general clearing.

Laura Yates named deputy tax assessor
PICKENS — Laura Yates of the Pickens County assessor’s office has been promoted to deputy assessor after 
more than a decade of service to the county.
She began her career with Pickens County as an assessment specialist I in March 2009. Prior to becoming deputy assessor, she served as an assessment specialist II and then an assessment analyst. She holds a bachelor’s degree in human service from Southern Wesleyan University.

LIBERTY — Eula O’Donald Hall, 89, widow of the late Charles Herman Hall, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019.
Born on Jan. 26, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Jospeh and Ally Mae Patton O’Donald. Eula was a prayer warrior who was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She also enjoyed gardening.
Surviving are her daughter, Kimberly Tankersley (Paul); one son, Ronnie Hall (Carol); one daughter-in-law, Kelli Hall; two sisters, Martha Aiken and Annette McGathy; seven grandchildren, Josh Tankersley, Kaitlin Hall, Nathan Hall, Candise Zimmerman, Dedi Hall, Kelli White and Jennifer Bryan; two great-grandchildren, Jordan
Easley weathers storm against Blue Flame

EASLEY — After holding the lead for much of the contest, the Easley Green Wave boys’ basketball team was on the verge of collapse on Friday night against rival Pickens.
The Green Wave held a 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but a resilient Pickens team brought it back to a one-point game with just less than four minutes to go. The comeback ended there, as Malaki Calhoun and Tim Bradley were clutch from the charity stripe to extinguish the Blue Flame with a 67-62 victory.
“We have a lot of talent, but we have a lot of young, inexperienced kids.” Easley head coach Mike Jones said. “We took a lot of bad shots and should’ve let the clock run out in some spots, but that is a part of the learning

Wave clamp down to beat rival Pickens
EASLEY — Coming off a less than ideal start, the Easley Green Wave girls’ basketball team was looking to turn things around going into its matchup with archrival Pickens on Friday night.
Following losses to rival Wren and West-Oak earlier in the week, the Green Wave reversed their fortunes in a big
way, stifling Pickens offensively in a 35-20 win.
“We’ve really been honing in on turnovers,” Easley coach Ivan Raymond said. “We were averaging around 20 a game, and toward the end of the game tonight, we had seven. I told the girls that’s the difference — just playing the game smarter. They’ve played hard each game, but I think flipping that switch mentally allowed us to win this game.”

New Liberty head coaches pick up first victories
LIBERTY — After a slow start to the 2019 season, the Liberty boys’ and girls’ basketball teams picked things up for their Dec. 9 matchups with Pickens, and for LHS head coaches Jonathan Dilworth and Gregg Thomas, it 
marked a major career accomplishment.
Leading the boys’ and girls’ teams, respectively, Dilworth and Thomas are in their first year at the helm of the Red Devil basketball teams and had yet to see a win entering the matchup against the Blue Flame. However, when the night was over, they both had added a milestone first victory.
Thomas’ Lady Red Devils started off the night in a hole before things turned around. The Lady Red Devils were outscored 14-10 in the opening quarter, but a stellar shooting performance by Emmaline Terry and some hardnosed defense by Courtney Black saw the Devils outscore Pickens 30-14 the rest of the way

Daniel seniors recognized for signing with colleges

CENTRAL — The credentials of the five Daniel High School student-athletes who were recognized in front of the student body on Friday are hard to top.
With the most decorated passer in the history of the football program, a four-time state cross-country champion and a standout athlete who’s earned all-state honors in both golf and soccer — along with two of the area’s top baseball players — it was a dynamic group that was celebrated for signing to continue their athletic careers at the next level.
