Governor loosens some COVID restrictions, tightens others

STATE — Recommended COVID-19 precautions issued for restaurants are now mandatory, according to an 
executive order issued by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster last week.
On May 8, McMaster announced restaurants throughout the state would be allowed to re-open for limited dine-in services beginning May 11.
Those restaurants were encouraged to follow guidelines issued by AccelerateSC following input from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.
McMaster’s new order, which went into effect Monday, makes “all previous recommended guidelines for restaurants and other establishments that attract groups of people” mandatory, according to a release from the governor’s office.

City of Liberty shows off new logo and branding

LIBERTY — The city of Liberty unveiled its new logo and branding last week.
The “Start Here. Thrive Here” slogan aims to tell Liberty’s story, Mayor Brian Petersen said Monday evening.
“We made sure there was money in the budget for that last year,” he said. “If you want things to grow, you’ve got to make an investment.”
The process involved assessing Liberty’s strengths and weaknesses.

School board filing opens
COUNTY — Filing is now open for three Pickens County School Board seats and 11 local watershed district director seats set to be up for election in November.
The school board seats of Betty Bagley (District 1), Shannon Haskett (District 3) and Betty Garrison (District 5) will be on the ballot for the Nov. 3 general election.

State’s hospital bed occupancy rate climbing
Local COVID-19 victim shares story with officials

PICKENS — South Carolina’s intensive care unit bed utilization rate reached its highest point so far during the COVID-19 pandemic last week, according to DHEC.
Pickens County administrator Ken Roper discussed that
number and other COVID-19 case numbers during a Facebook Live video Thursday.
“Pickens County has 363 active cases of COVID-19 right now,” he said Thursday.
Active cases are those cases that have tested positive within the last 14 days, Roper said.
“That’s the way DHEC tracks that,” he said. “We’ve had a total of 1,653 positive cases in Pickens County since March 20, when we had our first positive. South Carolina as a whole has had 87,117 confirmed cases and 1,551 confirmed

Officials report more COVID-19 Deaths in county
COLUMBIA — Although no new deaths were reported on Sunday and Monday to start this week, state officials reported at least one new confirmed or probably COVID-19 death in Pickens County

Mill foundation plans ‘Seeds of Change’ event
PICKENS — The Hagood Mill Foundation is planning a virtual event later this month to explore the role of the

Clemson University announces employee virus testing results
