Figs are here today, gone tomorrow

The ripening figs of August mark the end of summer and signal that fall will be here soon.
Figs have a very short shelf life, so if you have access to fresh figs, use them up quickly. They’re delicious straight from the bush, sliced and topped with cream or served in one of the recipes featured today.
Two of the recipes this week use dried figs, available in most grocery stores. So, if you don’t have access to fresh figs, perhaps you’d like to try one of these.

PICKENS — Pickens County administrator Ken Roper has been talking about the county’s COVID-19 numbers for months now.
On Friday, he had some good news to share in a Facebook Live update video.
“The slope (of cases), the rise over the run, has started to level off a little bit,” Roper said. “That’s good. It tells us that we’re not getting cases as quickly as we were a couple of months back.”
The county’s number of cases that DHEC considered active has also started to decline, he said.
“Active cases are cases where you’ve had a positive test for COVID-19 within the last 14 days,” Roper said. “The active cases

Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling
Within the Christian faith, we understand that an individual will not come to God on their own. The depravity of mankind and the lost condition of their spiritual state prevents everyone from having a desire to love and serve or even an interest in God until God intervenes.
So, what can cause a person to want to know more about God? They must be drawn to Him, as they would not have the faith to come to Jesus unless God first

Police: Suspect in bat beating had COVID-19
Charged with attempted murder, man being held in isolation at detention center
PICKENS — An attempted murder suspect told Pickens police that he had COVID-19 as he was being arrested this week.
According to a news release from Pickens Police Department Lt. Samuel Byers, officers responded to an address on Ann Street on Sunday after a call about an assault.
According to Byers, officers were told a man had gone to the home and assaulted a woman with a baseball bat and his fists.
The woman was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for medical treatment following the incident, Byers said.
