Liberty wrestling crowned Pickens County champs
LIBERTY — The Liberty High School wrestling team won the 2020-21 Pickens County wrestling championship on Friday.
The team defeated Pickens 51-30, Daniel 39-33 and Easley 35-33 to win the title.

Daniel girls pull away late against Warriors

WESTMINSTER — After a defensive struggle in the first half, Daniel girls’ basketball coach Cosandar Griffin was in dire need of some offense against West-Oak last Tuesday night.
The Lions turned to sophomore guard Destiny Hoover and she delivered big, scoring 11 points in the second half as Daniel pulled away for a 41-27 victory.
“She’s such a hard worker,” Griffin said of Hoover. “She was the leader of the offense today, and I’m just lucky to have her.”

Lapses haunt Lions after loss to West-Oak

Canned food drive champs
Every year during basketball season, the Pickens Recreation Department sponsors a canned food drive to benefit Gleaning House Ministries. As an added incentive, the Pickens Recreation Department awards a pizza/ice cream party to the team that collects the most cans. SDPC graduation ceremonies again set to be held outdoors
PICKENS — For the second consecutive year, the School District of Pickens County will hold its graduation exercises outdoors.
As a precaution due to COVID-19, the district will hold its commencement ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. May 22 at the four high schools’ respective football stadiums.

Nonprofit seeking Valentines for elderly

PICKENS — Warmth and Comfort for the Elderly in the Upstate, SC is collecting Valentine cards for residents in area health care facilities.
Members of the nonprofit use their crochet skills to provide warm items for nursing home patients, hospice groups, home health patients and elderly people who live at home and can’t afford them. They also hold regular donation drives like the Valentine

One of the most confounding things about our regrettable, year-long polarizing debate over wearing face masks during the pandemic is that so many people seemed to miss this basic fact: Such masks 
aren’t meant to protect the wearer, but to protect those with whom the wearer comes in contact.
We understand that ever since the first COVID-19 cases surfaced a year ago, people have yearned to keep their lives as normal and unfettered as possible.
