On the receiving end of a miracle
If it hadn’t been for a text message from a friend, we wouldn’t have known. That’s how we found out that we could register to get the COVID-19 vaccine at Ingles in Pickens. So, I registered us both online and then waited.

MARSHALL ELLSWORTH COBUN JR.
PICKENS — Marshall Ellsworth Cobun Jr., 89, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, at his home after a long life.
Marshall is survived by four children, Alice Sines, Rosa Stangeman, Theressa Pelfrey and Ray Cobun, and was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Freeman Sites, and a son, Marshall E. Cobun III. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, Angie Sines, Kenny Sines, Patty Sines, Eric Sines, Robbie Turner, Chris Turner, Tim Pelfrey, Katie Pelfrey, Davie Culpepper, Karen Dunbar, Cherie Toney, Stephen Cobun and Rayna Cobun; along with 44 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Local DAR members recognize WWII vets
COUNTY — Honoring World War II veterans of America’s Greatest Generation was a recent privilege for the Fort Prince George Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Chapter regent Carolyn Nations and vice regent Mildred Brewer visited with seven veterans from Pickens County and presented them with a DAR Certificate to honor them for their Valor, Service, and Sacrifice during World War II.
“I was so blessed to meet these wonderful veterans,” Nations said.
History’s ‘American Pickers’ looking for places to pick in South Carolina
NEW YORK — Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and their team are excited to return to South Carolina.
They plan to film episodes of the hit series “American Pickers” throughout the area in March 2021.

Tri-County scholarship to honor Lewis
PENDLETON — “Education was her driving force; she dedicated her life to it,” Lucas Durham proudly says when remembering his mother, Dr. C. Lynn Lewis, former dean of Tri-County Technical College’s Health Education Division, who passed away March 14, 2020, just 10 months after retirement in 2019.
“We miss her every day,” Durham said, adding that the best way to honor their mother was for him and his sister, Lindsay Porter, to establish an endowed scholarship in her memory.

Cooking with grapes adds depth to flavors

Years ago at my grandmama’s house, Fowler and my brother brought in duck they’d shot over the pond.
After they cleaned them, they were brought into the kitchen to be cooked. So we washed them thoroughly, patted them dry, salted and peppered them and stuffed them with sliced oranges and grapes. Then we roasted them in the oven, and when they were ready, removed them from the roasting pan and poured in wine to glaze the pan. After the liquid reduced, it was poured over the duck and they were served. It was a memorable meal.
That’s the first time I found out you could cook with grapes, and I was so excited to learn how much
