SAMANTHA SCRIVNER
PENDLETON — Samantha Scrivner, 45, of 105 Millwee Creek Road, died on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at her residence.
Born in Tampa, Fla., she was a daughter of Kayce and Charles Shusterman of Pendleton. She was a 1994 graduate of Liberty High School and volunteered with Pickens County Literacy Association book sales.
She enjoyed reading, arts and crafting. She loved all animals, especially her fur babies. Samantha was a kind and caring person who always helped everyone she could. She was beloved by all who knew her.

Young Devils can’t hang on against West-Oak

LIBERTY — 2021 hasn’t been the easiest year for the Liberty Red Devils baseball team, but a 3-0 first inning lead against West-Oak on 
Monday seemed like it might change their fortunes.
However, the Red Devils’ lead dissipated over the following innings as the Warrior bats heated up and Liberty struggled in the batter’s box.

Adult volleyball leagues now forming in Pickens
PICKENS — The Pickens Recreation Department is now holding registration for adult coed volleyball.
Players must be 21 years of age, with ID required. The registration fee due at signup will be $45 per couple for in-city residents and $55 for out-of-city residents. Individual fees are $22.50 in city and $27.50 out of city.
Due date for registration fees is April 2 at the rec department on Sangamo Road. Fees are non-refundable.
Once registration is concluded, single players will be placed on teams by the league director. Team registration is welcome.
Practice dates will be announced. Games are on Sunday afternoons and will begin around April 25.

Lions hang eight goals on Wren
CENTRAL — When Tipton Wright poked the ball past the keeper, giving the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team a 1-0 lead over Wren just 
20 seconds into Monday’s match, he knew it could be a special night for the Lions.
“After that goal I was like, ‘Alright, this is a good start,’” Wright said. “Coach (Phillip Boyer) wanted us to come out and have a strong start, because he knew they were a good team. We usually don’t start that quick, so it was good to have that momentum within the first minute.”
The Lions only picked up steam after the early goal, as they piled on the goals in a dominant 8-0 win

Pill Take Back Day set for April 24
COUNTY – The upcoming National Pill Take Back Day allows Pickens County residents to get rid of unwanted and expired prescription pills — without leaving the comfort of their vehicles.
The spring Pill Take Back Day will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 24.

Career center students perform well in regional manufacturing competition
COUNTY — Pickens County Career & Technology Center welding and machine tool technology students recently participated in Project MFG.
Project MFG is a national advanced manufacturing competition organized by RD Solutions and funded by the Department of Defense organization IBAS (Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment Program) that includes CAD/CAM, five-axis CNC and welding.
There are three rounds of the competition, which include invitational/state, regionals and nationals.

Griffin Ebenezer earns Golden Can Award
Scout Troop 51 challenged other community groups to donate canned food goods for its annual Scouting for Food, with all donations going to the Gleaning House Food Bank. Griffin Ebenezer Baptist Church of Pickens met the challenge and donated more canned goods than any other group. Pictured here, Troop 51 senior patrol leader Jacob Santeler presents the “Golden Can Award” to Griffin Ebenezer pastor Terry Brown, along with members Carlton Holley and Rodney Wakefield. The community donated more than 800 pounds of canned goods. Other groups who participated were the Pickens Police Department, Pickens Rotary Club, Smith Chapel, Grace United Methodist Church and Pickens Presbyterian Church.
