School district COVID-19 cases reach new low
COUNTY — The week after spring break saw the fewest COVID-19 infections and virus-related quarantines for students and staff of the School District of Pickens County so far this year.

Easley lifts mask mandate
EASLEY — Easley officials recommend — but no longer require — that residents wear masks to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.
At its meeting Monday night, Easley City Council unanimously approved a resolution terminating the city’s face covering
mandate ordinance.
The city adopted the face mask requirement in December, city administrator Stephen Steese said.
The city never added any penalties to the ordinance.

Major Impact
Liberty residents and business owners were shocked last Wednesday when a Norfolk Southern freight train plowed through a mobile home. The mobile home had gotten stuck on the tracks on U.S. Highway 178 in the middle of town. The accident happened around 1 p.m. No one was hurt in the accident, but the mobile home was completely destroyed after being cut in two by the train. Parts of the home were scattered from the impact site all the way to the overpass bridge near Calumet Baptist Church. Liberty police and firefighters called in workers to clean up the mess. Southern Wesleyan names Crothers interim president
CENTRAL — South Wesleyan University’s board of trustees announced this week that the school has hired Dr. William C. Crothers to fill the role of interim president beginning on July 1.
Current SWU president Todd Voss has announced he will retire on June 30.
“It is a great honor and special privilege to step into the Southern Wesleyan University community for a year as interim president,” Crothers said. “I also feel fortunate to be able to serve as interim president-elect part-time, working with and learning from president Todd Voss before he retires. … Dr. Voss has provided outstanding leadership during perhaps the most challenging period in the history of higher education. Hospital plans event to honor COVID victims

PICKENS — A ceremony will be held this weekend, weather permitting, to remember and celebrate the lives of those lost to the COVID-19 pandemic in Pickens County.
As of Saturday, that number was around 280, according to Wanda Waldrop, a scheduler at AnMed Health Cannon Hospital.
The remembrance celebration is set to be held from 3-4 p.m. Saturday on the front lawn of AnMed Health Cannon Hospital. In the event of inclement weather, the rain date is Saturday, April 24.

ONLY 1 NEW VIRUS DEATH CONFIRMED
COLUMBIA — With another week of lower death numbers reported, Pickens County is pushing toward the light at the end of the tunnel in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported the confirmed COVID-19 death of one elderly Pickens County resident and the probable death of another in the seven-day period ending on Monday, when the latest DHEC numbers available at press time had been released.
As of Monday, the county had had 16,444 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 1,559 probable cases,

Six Mile set to take down Dillard House
SIX MILE — A house on North Main Street in Six Mile the town had hoped to improve will instead be demolished after hazardous materials were found in the building.
Town clerk Rita Martin said asbestos and lead-based paint on the window trim were found in the town-owned property.
Known as the Dillard House, it was built in the early 20th century, according to Martin.

EASLEY — Sitting at 14-1 with more than half the season done, the 2021 baseball season has been a breeze thus far for the ninth-ranked Easley Green Wave.
