Local volleyball team wins tourney
ATLANTA — During a grueling three-day event, Carolina One 16 Elite Pickens went 10-0 to win the 2021 Mizuno Big South National Qualifier Tournament on April 2-4 at the Georgia World Conference Center in downtown Atlanta.
The event is the largest girls’ junior indoor volleyball tournament held over a single weekend

SCDOT’s Creech to speak at next COTU meeting April 15
PICKENS — Pickens grassroots group Conservatives of the Upstate will host a guest speaker from SCDOT at 7 p.m. this Thursday, April 15, at Cafe Connections, located at 319 E. Main St. in Pickens.
The public is welcome to attend. The guest speaker will be assistant director of public relations for the South Carolina Department of Transpiration Ted Creech. He will offer a chance to speak about roads in Pickens County.

Everyone has a role to play
On the afternoon of Dec. 10, Pickens County received an email from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) inviting our county to be part of a process known as Crisis Intercept Mapping for Suicide Prevention among Service Members,

PICKENS — Mr. Jackie Aaron Simpson, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 9, 2021.
Mr. Simpson was born in Anderson County and was the son of the late Echols Jack Simpson and Lila Mae Huckabee. He was a loving husband to Ann Richard Simpson.

Festival fun finally returns

COUNTY — After a year of lockdowns and social distancing, spring brings with it a number of festivals and events this year, including many that are returning from last year’s cancellations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pickens Azalea Festival will be held this Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17.
Roads will close at 6 p.m. Friday evening before the cruise-in, which will be held from 7-10 p.m. and will feature cars and Jeeps from all eras.

Monthly Soapstone fish fry set for this Saturday
PICKENS — Soapstone Church invites everyone to a special fundraiser at the church, located at 296 Liberia Road in Pickens, this Saturday, April 17.

FEMA to assist with funeral costs for COVID-19-related deaths
EASLEY — Beginning this month, families who have experienced the death of a loved one due to COVID-19 may be eligible for up to $9,000 in funeral assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
