Rabon earns BSA Alumnus of Year award
EASLEY — At the Boy Scouts of America Blue Ridge Council annual banquet Aug. 10, Dr. E.W. Rabon Jr. was presented the 2020 Alumnus of the Year award.
The award recognizes individuals who have a lifetime relationship with the scouting program. Only one award is given annually.
Rabon has been in scouting since 1949, when he became a Cub Scout. He received his Eagle Scout award in 1958 in Charleston.
He has received many awards in scouting, including the Silver Beaver award in 1979, Good Shepherd Award in

Big Cliff’s BBQ plans poker run
PICKENS — Get your motor running. Head out on the highway for a huge poker run at Big Cliff’s BBQ, located at 304 Ann St. in Pickens, from noon-6 p.m. this Saturday.
The event will start and end at Big Cliff’s BBQ, with all proceeds being split between the Alabaster House, a faith-based 12-step recovery program, and a local food pantry.
Food donations are being taken at Big Cliff’s BBQ, the Appalachian Ale House, Moe’s Original BBQ, Big D’s House of BBQ or S.B.H. BBQ

Cub Scouts plan activities for month
Cub Scouts offers a chance for young children to enjoy outdoor adventures. Here are some upcoming activities for the Pickens troop.
Sunday, Aug. 29, 2 p.m.: Scout Day at Greenville Drive. Tickets are $8 per person, but the pack will provide a free ticket to any child who is interested in joining Cub Scouts.
Monday, Aug. 30, 7 p.m.: Cub Scout kickoff meeting at Troop 51 Scout Hut at 188 Blacksnake Road in Pickens.

BARBARA JEAN HOLCOMBE
SUNSET — Barbara Jean Holcombe, “Gram,” 67, went home to be with her Savior on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 11, 1953, to Russell and Sylvia Riggins of Midway.
She is survived by her husband, David Furman Holcombe, to whom she was married on Dec. 21, 1972.
Also surviving are her father and mother; sister, Reda (Donnie) Collins of Pickens; sister, Jan Kueber of Easley; niece, Jessica (Jeremy) Gilstrap of Easley; her “grands” James Gilstrap, Russ (Sarah Catherine) Kueber, Abbie Kueber; Jonston Gilstrap and Shelby Kueber; the newest “grand,” Russell Baylor Kueber; and many beloved cousins.
Barbara was a longtime resident of Eastatoe Valley, where she and David kept a beautiful, loving home for her youngest sister and all of her “grands” to visit and stay for days.
She graduated from North Greenville and Limestone colleges. She worked at BASF in Central for many years prior to going to Duke Power’s Oconee Nuclear Station, where she retired in 1988.

EASLEY — For the Pickens Blue Flame, it was more disappointing than anything that they couldn’t take the field last week after the spectacular 28-0 showing they had against the Carolina High School Trojans at the Easley jamboree.
“It just sucks that we’re off for a week,” Pickens head coach Chad Smith said following the win at the Aug. 13 jamboree, which came
just hours after the School District of Pickens County announced extracurricular activities — including the Flame’s planned season opener against Liberty — were canceled for last week. “I think we’re ready to play, and hopefully we’ll come back and the kids will be in shape and just keep up the momentum.”

EASLEY — With a young team featuring nearly 20 freshmen and sophomores, the 2021 season is a rebuilding years in a lot of ways for the Liberty Red Devils,

EASLEY — The Easley football team had a successful final preseason tuneup on Aug. 13, blanking county foe Liberty 28-0 in the
final half of the Easley jamboree.
Against the Devils, the Green Wave were clicking on all cylinders.
Liberty was bottled up on the first drive by end Joey Plummer and linebacker Noah Pierce.
After another defensive standoff, Easley drove 37 yards in four plays to go up 7-0. Quarterback A.J. Brown hit tight end Ethan Swann and receiver Chris Clemons to set up back Myles Martin’s 11-yard scoring run. Reeves Dacus’ kick made it 7-0 with 4:58 left in the first quarter.

Lions top Greenville in back-and-forth jamboree battle

CENTRAL — For 24 minutes at the Aug. 13 Easley jamboree, the state’s top-ranked Class 3A football team edged out one of the top teams in Class 4A, but with just six seconds left against the Greenville Red Raiders, the Daniel Lions’ win looked like it might turn
into a tie.
A 59-yard pass from Red Raider quarterback Prometheus Franklin III to Josh Sapp set Greenville up with one last shot at the end zone from the Lions’ 18. Elgin and Santeler earn Eagle Badge
PICKENS — Noah Elgin and Jacob Santeler of Boy Scouts of America Troop 51 reached the pinnacle of scouting when they were awarded their Eagle Badge, the highest rank in Scouts, at a ceremony at Holly Springs Community Center on Aug. 7.
Elgin, 15, is a sophomore at Pickens High School and the son of Daryl and Sarena Elgin of Pickens. In addition to receiving Eagle, Elgin earned his Bronze and Gold Eagle Palms for 10 merit badges above those required for Eagle. For his Eagle Service Project, Elgin designed and built a Native American-style earthen oven at Hagood Mill, which has already been used to cook a pizza.
