Senior-laden Blue Flame topple 5A foe TL Hanna
PICKENS — The Pickens High School Lady Blue Flame volleyball team, which features eight seniors, downed Class 5A powerhouse T.L. Hanna of Anderson last week in the friendly confines of Coach Peggy Harden Anthony Gymnasium on the Pickens High School campus.
It was the preseason opener for the Pickens squad.

AnMed restricting visitation

PICKENS — AnMed Health has announced a new visitation policy due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19 in the area.
Beginning this Monday, all AnMed Health locations are limiting visitation to one person per patient because of COVID-19 concerns, according to a news

Common sense and COVID-19
Well, it’s been a quiet summer here at the Barnett Property. I have eradicated the poison oak in the backyard, choked out the English ivy in the trees and battled back the briars in the azaleas.
We have continued to stave off the coronavirus, although I wish people would quit celebrating the end of the pandemic, because it ain’t nearly over yet. More about that later.
We did finally make it down to Stone Mountain to visit my mom, who just turned 96. Except for having to use a walker to get around, she hasn’t changed a bit in the past 40 years.

Thee, thy and thou
Our language is constantly changing. New words are added, other words deleted. The gender issue has made us aware of how language can change our perceptions. The primary purpose of any language is to communicate. Does it really matter if you dangle a participle? Will anyone care if you split an infinitive?
Star Trek hurled us into space in 1966 when Capt. James T. Kirk began each episode with the famous opening that ended with the words “to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Grammarians, appalled at the split infinitive, said the line should read “to go boldly where no man has gone before.”

Knowing when to stand and when to be silent
Each week I spend a portion of my days writing and preparing messages. I pray and seek the Lord’s voice as I strain my spiritual ear to hear the direction he is leading me.
We know that thousands of men and women write and speak for audiences regularly and they enjoy it. However, when it comes to the ministry and

Arnold’s gives back to Liberty
Arnold’s of Liberty on Aug. 2 hosted a reopening and Give Back Day. Owner Gary Durkee gave $1,000 to the Liberty Community Scholarship. Preisig named principal at RC Edwards Middle School
CENTRAL — Thomas Preisig has been named as the new principal of R.C. Edwards Middle School.
Preisig’s hiring follows the departure of former principal Jeff Duncan, as Duncan was previously announced as the new principal at Pickens High School.
“Mr. Preisig has demonstrated excellent leadership at Easley High School over the past seven years,” School District of Pickens County superintendent Danny Merck said. “Thomas has earned the respect from students, teachers, parents, district leadership

Cruise-in planned at Market at the Mill
On Saturday, Aug. 21, from 5-10 p.m., the Market at the Mill will sponsor an event called the Summer’s End Cruise-In. It will be located at 225 Pumpkintown Highway in Pickens and will feature a carnival. The event is free to the public and will include food, music and giveaways every 30 minutes.

Soapstone Church invites everyone to a special fundraiser at the church, located at 296 Liberia Road in Pickens, on Saturday, Aug. 21.
The event will feature fine cooking and will be held from noon-8 p.m. Visitors will enjoy true Southern cooking, including a fish fry, barbecue and fried chicken
