Red Devils forced to cancel game against Landrum due to COVID

LIBERTY — After being forced to miss two of their first three games of the season due to COVID-19, the Liberty Red Devils will continue to wait once again 
this week following the cancellation of their matchup with Landrum.
The Red Devils announced the cancellation of this Friday’s game with the Cardinals in an update released last Friday.
“Our JV and varsity football games scheduled for next week against Landrum have been canceled,”

Tigers drop ugly opener to Georgia

Daniel, Easley honor hall of famers
COUNTY — After not celebrating honorees a season ago amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Daniel and Easley high school athletic halls of fame recently announced their newest inductees.
Daniel, which holds inductions every two years, added eight members to its hall of fame at halftime of the Lions’ football season opener against Easley on Aug. 27.
Easley is set to honor the five members each of its 2020 and 2021 hall of fame classes at halftime of the Wave’s Sept. 17 gridiron matchup with T.L. Hanna.

Class of 1996. Participated in the 1995 Shrine Bowl. Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year in South Carolina. 1995 all-state selection. Named All-Western 3A conference his last two seasons. Starting quarterback both his junior and senior seasons. Also started at defensive back and played wide receiver as a sophomore. Guided Daniel to a 14-1 record and a state championship as a senior. Rushed 190 times for 1,121 yards and 26 touchdowns. Threw for 1,702 yards and 11 touchdowns. Earned three letters in basketball, averaging 12 points per game. Earned five track letters. Named to the honor roll during every grading period.
Received a scholarship to play for the university of North Carolina, where he was a major contributor, starting at safety, kick returner and quarterback.

7 more COVID deaths reported
COLUMBIA — With case numbers continuing to rise throughout the state, Pickens County reported seven new COVID-19 deaths over the past week.
According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, there were seven confirmed death in the county in the one-week period from last Tuesday to Monday, when the latest numbers were available.
Pickens County remains the worst of the state’s 46 counties in infection rate, with 16,974.4 cases per 100,000

Liberty wrestling coach dies after COVID battle

LIBERTY — The COVID-19 pandemic claimed a beloved coach and teacher in Liberty last week.
Liberty Middle teacher and Liberty High wrestling coach Nathan Day, 57, died Friday after a two-week ICU stay in a battle with COVID-19.
Day served as athletic director at Liberty Middle after coming to Liberty in 2017 from Battery Creek High School, where he coached for 19 years and led the wrestling team to six state titles.
“Coach Day is most known throughout South Carolina for being an award-winning wrestling coach, and he truly was amazing at that,” LMS principal Dr. Lisa Cassidy said. “But, when I think of Coach Day, I think of the humble, quiet, funny man that carried his flip phone around, enjoyed playing April Fool’s jokes on just about anyone, and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to be sure the Liberty students had everything they needed.
