DACUSVILLE — Julie Garrett, 63, loving wife of 44 years to Gene Garrett, passed away from this life on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, at St. Francis Downtown.
A native of Charleston, W.Va., Julie was born on July 27, 1958, to the late Rev. John Smith Jr. and Joyce Finger Smith. She was a graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton, Miss., and later graduated from Greenville Technical College. She loved reading, taking care of her grandchildren and bird watching and was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship. Mrs. Garrett fell in love with the faculty, staff and students of Pickens High School, where she worked as a receptionist for the past 17
Daniel boys dominate Bulldogs

CENTRAL — Coming off a heartbreaking region loss to Wren, the Daniel High School boys’ basketball team responded with a whistle-to-whistle 65-37 pounding of Pendleton last week.
“This group is a resilient group that bounces back quickly,” Daniel head coach Ben Touchberry said after the Jan. 25 game. “They showed a relentless pursuit defensively, and it generated a lot of easy opportunities on the offensive end.”
The Lions’ bounceback was fronted by star point guard Bobby Taylor, who said his mentality was to go for the throat coming off the close loss to Wren.
Taylor did just that, putting up 23 points on a variety of looks, including four three-pointers as he led the Lions in scoring.

Blue Flame basketball swept by Razorbacks
PICKENS — With the playoffs closing in, the Pickens Blue Flame took the court against Walhalla on Friday night hoping to improve their standing.
However, both the boys’ and girls’ teams couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity, getting swept by the Razorbacks.
The Pickens girls opened up play on the night, overcoming an early deficit to take the lead in the third quarter, before falling in the final quarter, 45-40.

Lion girls hold off Pendleton rally

CENTRAL — After taking a 6-4 lead midway through the first quarter, the Daniel High School girls’ basketball team never trailed again against Pendleton last 
week, and despite it being a little too close for comfort at the end, Daniel head coach Cosandar Griffin was proud of her team’s fight in the 47-43 win.
“I’m just proud of the way the girls came out and fought today,” Griffin said after the Jan. 25 game. “We’ve been battling adversity, and I was glad to see they stepped up for the challenge today.”

Lions’ Lawson commits to Clemson before signing day

CENTRAL — When he received his offer from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney in December, Jahiem Lawson felt fairly confident he had found his collegiate home.
But, wanting to do his due diligence, the Daniel High School senior wanted to get on campus for his official visit before
making a final decision.
His visit last month cleared any remaining doubts he may have had, and on Friday he followed in the footsteps of his brother — and a few other prominent Daniel defensive linemen from years past — in committing to play his college football at Clemson. He will sign with the Tigers on National Signing Day this Wednesday.
“I kind of knew (when I was offered), but I wanted to see, so on my official visit, that’s when it really happened,” Lawson said Friday evening. “They brought me in, and it felt like family as soon as I got there.

Wreaths Across America tour to stop in Clemson
Free mobile education exhibit helps honor local veterans
Clemson — Wreaths Across America (WAA) in Clemson has announced a local stop for the WAA Mobile Education Exhibit (MEE) national tour.
The MEE started its tour at the WAA Headquarters in Maine and will be in the area for a Feb. 19 scheduled event that will last from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. that is both free and open to the public. The event will take place at Nettles Park, located at 102 Nettles Park Road in Clemson.

Fleet Reserve Association Branch 15 celebrated the local ninth-12th-grade winners of the 2021-22 National FRA Americanism/Patriotism Essay Contest on Jan. 15.
