Daniel boys win in PKs to take state championship

COLUMBIA — After letting a two-goal lead slip away in regulation, the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team’s state championship hopes rested on the result of penalty kicks after 110 minutes of hard-fought play.
The Lions turned to senior captain Liam Desjardins for the first kick, and he delivered to put the Lions ahead, but it was the play of keeper Coleman Wright in the moments after that stole the show.
The junior blocked three of four Brookland-Cayce attempts to give the Lions the win and secure their first Class 3A state championship since 2003.

Wave take district title

EASLEY — There are more firsts for the Easley High School softball program following a 12-1 run-rule Game 2 win over Lancaster last Wednesday night in the District 2 championship
For the first time, the Lady Green Wave are District 2 champions and earned a berth in the Class 4A Upper State tournament.
“It feels great,” Easley Coach Trish Spence said. “I am so proud of the girls.”

Liberty, Pickens athletes sign letters of intent

COUNTY — Liberty and Pickens high schools will be sending three more athletes to the college ranks next fall.
In a ceremony at Liberty High School last week, Chantzli Fowler and Kendall Meinders signed to continue their volleyball careers at the next level. Both players were key components of a Liberty volleyball team that advanced to the Upper State championship for the first time since 2014.

Special Lions group culmination of Boyer’s culture
‘‘I can’t lie and say I always believed the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team was going to pull out the state championship win against Brookland-Cayce on Friday.
When the Lions went up 2-0 in the first half, I was ready to call the game. Then, when Brookland-Cayce stormed back to take the lead in the final five minutes, I was ready to call it once again for the other side, and once again I was proven to be wrong as Liam Desjardins hit the equalizer from 52 yards out.
By the start of extra time, I realized that neither team was going to give until the final whistle, and for the first time I got it right, with the Lions pulling out the heart-pounding state championship win in penalty

LIBERTY — Barbara Ross “Bobbie” Melton, 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at her home surrounded by family.
