STATE — The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a different type of destruction than the disasters the South Carolina Emergency Management Division has responded to in recent years, according to its director.
“There were no infrastructure and residential damages associated with COVID that we normally see in hurricanes and tornadoes and floods,” Kim Stenson said. “However, the impact on our citizens was certainly significant — let’s say probably catastrophic — in terms of deaths and economic instability.”
Stenson spoke recently at a press conference the South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health held about the release of its latest report “Lessons Learned from COVID-19: Contagious Disease Outbreak Planning

SIMPSONVILLE — Law enforcement and others were recently recognized for their efforts in keeping alcohol out of underage hands.
Such recognitions for the 13th Circuit Alcohol Enforcement Team, which covers both Pickens and Greenville counties, went virtual the past few years, thanks to the pandemic.
The Aug. 17 banquet at Holly Tree County Club marked the first time the group had seen each other in person since 2019, according to remarks delivered by

An old dog learns a new trick
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
That may be true of dogs, but not people.
This story is about a musical technique, but the lesson could apply to any endeavor.
So here’s my case in point:
I made a decision when I was 16 years old that I would never try to play bottleneck slide guitar because I would never be able to do it anywhere near as good as Duane Allman.
Duane had mastered the slide guitar. He had such a clear and sizzling tone and played with such high energy, it

Building with living stones
As a Christian faith writer, I am blessed with God providing me with spiritual insights and considerations to relay to others.
He creates opportunities for me to share, however, what I do is not anything more special than how millions of other Christians are serving Him, and I humbly acknowledge that most are more talented and effective than myself. I’m just a small piece of a large puzzle, one voice among many who is pointing toward the one who has all authority, who created everything and knows everything.
I can honestly say that I’m consumed with writing about God and the Christian life, and my testimony includes

Preserve and protect Highway 11
Dear Editor,
“What is a conservative after all, but one who conserves, one who is committed to protecting and holding close the things by which we live. … And we want to protect and conserve the land on which we live — our countryside, our rivers and mountains, our plains and meadows and forests. This is our patrimony. This is what we leave to our children. And our great moral responsibility is to leave it to them either as we found it or better than we found it.” — Ronald Reagan
Sometimes, it is the obvious that is the hardest to see. It is the God-given scenic magnificence of the S.C. Highway 11 corridor that drives property values. If we

Green Wave hold off late Wade Hampton rally for first win

GREENVILLE — Easley hung on Friday night for a 28-27 win over Wade Hampton, getting a stop on a late two-point conversion to seal the win.
The Green Wave (1-1) had chances to put the game away with several scoring chances in the second half, but had to hold on in the end.
“At the end of the day, you’ve got to celebrate a win,” Easley coach Jordan Durrah said. “The objective is to win the game. It was ugly. We didn’t want it to be that close after being up that much in the first half. They did a great job of fighting back and making it a game.”
Playing without injured starting quarterback Kalab Sutton, the Green Wave started freshman Jay Stoker, up from the junior varsity squad, at signal-caller. He rushed for two scores, passed for another and had two scoring passes erased

Southside hands Blue Flame first loss of season
By Cheri Anthony

PICKENS — Pickens was looking to start its season a perfect 3-0, but the Flame faced a tall task with an explosive Southside offense on Friday night.
Although the Blue Flame entered the contest with confidence after Jaden Jackson racked up 305 yards the previous week against Franklin County, Ga., Southside’s attack was too much for the Pickens defense to contain in a 48-27 loss, the Flame’s first of the season.
Pickens’ captains for the contest were Daniel Ross, Conner Hayes, Jackson and Sammy Edwards. The Flame won the coin toss and elected to receive. With two wins already under their belt, Friday night’s game looked to be going the Blue Flame’s way, as they took the opening kickoff 61 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. Six runs were capped

Second half slip dooms Red Devils against Eastside

TAYLORS — After suffering its first loss of the 2022 season against Blue Ridge, Liberty tried to get back in the win column last week, but the Eastside Eagles had other plans.
The Eagles’ effective rushing attack and the Red Devils’ own turnovers in the second half were too much for Liberty to overcome at the end of the night, as they lost 38-13 to drop to 1-2 on the year.
The game began with the Eagles taking the opening kickoff and starting on their own 29-yard line. The Eagles fed the ball to junior running back Kalvin Banks early and often. In a methodical fashion, Eastside drove 71 yards, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by Banks. After a failed
