Oppenheimer in the spotlight, but did you know about Upstate’s own great physicist?

Nearly 80 years after he led the scientific team that jolted World War II to a cataclysmic conclusion, his name is in the news again because of a movie about him that cleaned up at the Oscars last week.

The Socialite Smuggler
Katharine Dexter’s great-grandfather, Samuel Dexter, had served in the cabinets of both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Her father, Wirt Dexter, was a prominent attorney in Chicago. He married Josephine Moore, a wealthy socialite, in 1866. Katharine was born on Aug. 27, 1875.

Senior center set to host gospel, bluegrass event
