VA needs volunteers to help with ‘Wall that Heals’ exhibit
LIBERTY — Pickens County Veterans Affairs will host the “Wall That Heals” in Pickens County from Nov. 8 until closing at 2 p.m. Nov. 11.
The three-quarter-scale replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point, along with a mobile education center. It will be available to visit at Deer Wood Farms at 765 Breazeale Road in Liberty and will be open 24 hours a day and free to the public.
The “Wall That Heals” honors the more than 3 million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 Ameircan men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.
Volunteers are needed to greet and assist visitors. Anyone who would like to volunteer to be a part of the community event can find additional information and registration at pickensveterans.org.
Along with the wall display, the mobile education center exhibit includes digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes.” That includes service members whose names are on the wall with their home of record within the local area, along with digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the area honored through VVMF’s “In Memory” program, which honors veterans who returned home and later died. If you have a veteran who has not been registered in the “In Memory” program, the deadline to be included in the Pickens County visit is Oct. 8.
For registration, visit vvmf.org/In-Memory-Program or contact the Pickens County Veterans Affairs office at (864) 898-5928.
