Arthur Ray Martin
Six Mile — Arthur Ray Martin, 70, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at his home.
Ray was born in Elkin, N.C., son of the late Marvin J. and Dorothy Simmons Martin. He was President of Industrial Instrument Company, and was widely respected in the systems control industry. He had traveled extensively, both nationally and internationally on consulting and engineering applications, especially in the paper industry. Ray was also well known for his wildlife habitat enhancement and his love of farming. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and a member of Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Geri Woodall Martin; son, Erik Martin and his wife, Shea of Seneca; daughter, Adrienne Ambrose and her husband, Tony, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; sisters, Johnsie Crawford and her husband, Vic, of Brandon, Fla. and Connie Routson and her husband, Fred, of Bixby, Okla.; grandchildren, Max, Sam and Rex Ambrose, Makenzie and Riley Martin.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother John R. Martin, and a grandson, Damon Cole Martin.
Funeral services were held on Monday Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. at Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church. Burial followed in Memory Gardens, Clemson.

Haskell Nalley
Pickens — Haskell Bruce Nalley, 84, loving husband of Rachael Nalley, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013.
Haskell was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Olin Eugene and Hortense Durham Nalley. He was retired from the School District of Pickens County where he taught carpentry for 23 years and was a member of Tabor United Methodist Church and Keowee Lodge, #79 A.F.M. Haskell was proud to be a “Hejaz Shriner” being a member of Hejaz Temple of The Shrine in Greenville where he held the rank of Temple Colonel.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Rachael Smith Nalley, special daughters, Denise Anderson, Janie Dodgens, Lorine Nix, and Debbie McNeely (Roy), and son, Chris Smith (Lyla).
Also surviving is his brother W. T. Nalley, sister, Cornelia Bowen, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, five great great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Hazel A. Marler
Easley — Hazel Aiken Marler, 83, wife of the late Jesse Marler, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late George and Sadie Galbreath Aiken, Mrs. Marler retired from Dow Chemical in Greenville and attended Easley Bible Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherry Clary (Marvin) and Teresa Westmoreland; one sister, Teena Hopkins (James); one brother, Joe Aiken (Martha); two sisters-in-law, Mary Lou and Carolyn Aiken; six grandchildren, Nicole Codell (Morgan), Eric Clary, Evan, Joshua, Amy and Ashley Westmoreland; and one great-grandchild, Callaway Lee Codell.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Marler was predeceased by two brothers, Ben and Sammy Aiken; two sisters, Lucy and Ollie Masters; a son-in-law, Steve Westmoreland; and two brothers-in-law, Jarrett and Bolt Masters.
Funeral services were 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Dr. Wayne Mouritzen
Pickens — Dr. Wayne Walter Mouritzen, 75, of Pickens, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.
Dr. Mouritzen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Walter Christian and Juel Mildred Bogan Mouritzen. He was a pastor of several churches including Morgan Memorial Wesleyan Church in upstate South Carolina, High Bridge Reformed Church in New Jersey, and Royal Oak Reformed Church in Michigan.
Dr. Mouritzen was a U. S. Army veteran serving as a Chaplain. He was also a teacher, having taught elementary classes in New Jersey and Florida.
He also taught at Elkton Christian College in Maryland, and Pensacola Christian College and Hobe Sound Bible College, both in Florida. Dr. Mouritzen attended and received degrees from Houghton College, Wagner College, Bob Jones University, Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Kentucky.
Survivors include Gaye Mouritzen, his daughter Donna Simms and her husband Robert of Pickens and granddaughters, April and June Simms.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Mouritzen was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Andrew Mouritzen who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.
Burial was at 2:15 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Memorial Park and a memorial service followed at 3 p.m. at Pickens Presbyterian Church in Pickens.

Dr. S. Milford Biddle
Easley — Dr. S. Milford Biddle, 88, of Easley, husband of the late Martha Ozell Blansit Biddle, died on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.
Born Oct. 11, 1924 in Sand Mountain, Ala., he was a son of the late Cicero and Lora Ada Harwood Biddle. Dr. Biddle was the retired pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Liberty.
He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Kelley and Loretta Rolen (Dr. Jim Rolen); sisters, Rosella Biddle and Louie Biddle; grandchildren, the Rev. Jeffery Kelley (Kim), Jason Kelley (Karla), and Kim Perry; great-grandchildren, Brendan Kelley, Regan Chase Kelley, Tori Beth Perry, Elliott Kelley, Reilly Kelley, Brooklyn Kelley, and Britton Perry.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a son-in-law, the Rev. Clifford Kelley; one brother and four sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at Grace Baptist Church, Liberty. Burial was at Monday in Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Rev. Ray Russell
Easley — The Rev. Buddy Ray Russell, 59, of Saco Lowell Road, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.
Born in Waynesville, N.C., a son of the late Ransom Moody “Buddy” and Gladys Frady Russell, the Rev. Russell was a graduate of Tuscola High School, Asheville-Buncombe Technical College and Luther Rice Seminary. He moved to Easley in 1974 to work with Platt-Saco Lowell. Mr. Russell was employed with Michelin North America as the Greenville Plant Engineering Manager. In 1999 he was called into the ministry and became the pastor of Riverview Baptist Church in September of 2006 where he presently served.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon League Russell of the home; two daughters, Laura McDonald (William) of Piedmont and Lindsey Titus (Charles) of Easley; a brother, John R. Russell (Louise) of Leicester, N.C.; a sister, Nina Messer (Everett) of Waynesville, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Hunter Ransom Russell, Wm. Levi McDonald and Raelynn Abigail Titus.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Russell was predeceased by two brothers, William M. Russell and Milas Scott “Bo” Russell and by his in-laws, William G. and Betty Lou Hawkins League.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Sunday at Riverview Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

‘Skinny’ Guthrie
Marietta — Floyd Pearson “Skinny” Guthrie, 83, husband of Leavy Mae Turner Guthrie, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 in Brevard, N.C.
Skinny was born in Tuxedo, N.C. a son of the late James and Ella Lucinda Redding Guthrie.
He was retired as a self-employed logger and was a member of Cleveland Church of God. Skinny was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Leavy Mae Guthrie of Easley, daughters, Jane Poole (Joey) of Travelers Rest, Janice Elrod (David), Tammy Guthrie, and Mollie Laws all of Six Mile, and Lacinda Snow (Mark) of Travelers Rest, sons, Frank Guthrie (Kathy) of Marietta, and John Guthrie of Six Mile, 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and brothers and sisters, Skinny was preceded in by a daughter, Tina Underwood and sons, Richard Guthrie, Mike Guthrie, and Job Guthrie.

Wendell Muller
Easley — Wendell Charles Muller, 70, of Easley died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Rev. F.L. Muller and the late Gathie Chandler Muller Skelton. He was a butcher for 50 years and was working part time at Ingles when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Surviving are his wife Sandra Thomas Muller; three children, Angie Campbell(Stephen) of Brandon, Miss., Chuck Muller of Seneca and Melanie Muller of Easley; three grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob and Kristen Campbell of Brandon, Miss.; three siblings, Helen Cassell of Simpsonville, Joan Mauldin(Horace) of Easley and Eddie Muller(Betty) of Davidson, N.C. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to his friends, neighbors, former coworkers and church family; he could not have endured this without each of you. May God bless you as you have blessed him.
The burial will be private.

Sarah Helen Stone Smith
Greer — Helen, age 92, was born Feb. 17, 1921 in the Gap Hill Community of Pickens County.
She resided in Pickens until moving to Greer in 2005. Henry Clifton Smith, her husband of 54 years, predeceased her in 1993. The daughter of Ella Mae Mitchell Stone and William Noah Stone, she was the 10th of 12 children. Helen grew up on a farm and never lost her love for growing vegetables and flowers. She lived a simple, quiet life, loving and caring for her family. “She watched over the affairs of her household and did not eat the bread of idleness”. Pr. 31:27. For over 50 years Helen was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church, a place she loved, served and called home. She’s now a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Taylors. After a long battle with lung disease, much suffering and trouble that accompany this earthly pilgrimage, the battle ended Sept. 16, 2013. “Death has been swallowed up in Victory. “
Helen is also survived by a daughter, Martha Jean Parker, of Greer. She adored her grandchildren; Cindy Parker Hale and husband Charles A Hale, Daniel Clifton Parker and wife, Christy Hergner Parker of Greenwood; great grandchildren, Sarah Anna Holder and Benjamin Daniel Holder of Greenville, Lauren Elizabeth Parker and Mary Kathryn Parker of Greenwood; great-great granddaughter, Ella Catherine Ryberg. She was lovingly known by all as Ma Ma. Pat Keasler, a dear and loyal friend to the end, is owed a special thank you. One sister survives her, Florine Strange of Easley.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice of Greenville, 15 Brendan Way, Suite 100, Greenville SC 29615.

Bill Clark
Six Mile — William “Bill” Clark, 60, husband of the late Margaret “Peggy” Dodgens Clark, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.
Bill was born in Pickens County, a son of Margaret Clark Neal of Seneca. He was employed with Michelin Tire Corporation as a production technician and he was a member of Gap Hill Baptist Church. Bill was a U. S. Army veteran and received an AS Degree from Tri-County Technical College.
Survivors include his mother of Seneca, daughter Jasmine Clark of Pendleton and son Joshua Clark of Six Mile, grandchildren include Courtland Bowling, River Bowling, Harley Clark, Blaze Craine, Justice Craine, and Dawson Roper. Brothers and sisters include Glenda Neal Nichols of Westminster, Randell Clark of West Union, and Ricky Neal of Seneca.
Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Gap Hill Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

James H. Scruggs, Sr.
Liberty — James Horace Scruggs, Sr., 65, of 228 Golden Creek Road, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Pickens County, a son of Alice Marie Elrod Scruggs of Easley and the late Walter Truman Scruggs, Mr. Scruggs retired as owner of Scruggs Dry Wall Company and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a son, James Horace Scruggs, Jr., of Liberty; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Scruggs Hannah (Doyce Roger) of Liberty; three brothers, Derwin Winfield Scruggs and Randall Eugene Scruggs, both of Norris, and Edward Dorsey Scruggs of Easley; three sisters, Rosa Bell Waldrop and Lola Mae Suddeth of Easley and Wauna Katherine Brictenham of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Sutherland, James Horace “Trey” Scruggs, III, and Serenity Jane Scruggs; and great-grandchildren, Trinity Lynn Sutherland and Trenton Gage Sutherland.
