LIBERTY — The sound booth for Liberty High School’s football stadium was named after longtime LHS public address announcer Doug Winkler during Monday night’s meeting of the Pickens County School Board.

Winkler served at the games for 37 years before passing away in December after a battle with lung cancer. After Winkler’s passing, several from the Liberty area approached the board about naming the public address booth after Winkler.

Winkler was employed for 30 years by Alice Manufacturing. He also served in the National Guard. He was the father of three Liberty High School students who have all gone on to be very successful in the community.

“He was a pillar of the community, well-respected,” board chair Brian Swords said. “We appreciate his family and we appreciate his contribution.”

The motion passed unanimously.
