MARY SUE MCJUNKINS

EASLEY — Mary Sue McJunkins, 81, wife of the late Charles Newton McJunkins, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Carvin Otis and Annie Mae Waldrop Satterfield, Mrs. McJunkins retired from Home Health Care and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Dale McJunkins (Tina) of Easley; a daughter, Tonya McAlister (Robert) of Easley; four granddaughters, Christina Kelley, Courtney Lance, Kendra McAlister and Katelyn McAlister; and three great-grandsons, Connor, Wyatt and Walker Kelley. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. McJunkins was predeceased by a brother, Clyde Satterfield; and two sisters, Jacqueline Youngblood and Deloris Lesley.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Horace Edward Gravely, Jr.

WALHALLA — Horace Edward Gravely Jr., husband of the late Alice Joanne Gravely, of 213 North Church Street, Walhalla died Jan. 25 at GHS Cottingham Hospice House.

Born in Spartanburg to the late Katherine Carter Gravely and the Rev. Horace E. Gravely Sr., he moved in his early years with his family as his father served Methodist churches in the Upper South Carolina Conference. In 1942, Chaplain Gravely was called into service and perished Feb. 7, 1943, in the North Atlantic when his troop ship, the U.S.S. Mallory, was hit by a German U-Boat. His widow and children Horace Jr., Martha Frances Gravely (who later married Dr. Sam Willis of Clemson) and John Willoughby Gravely, were in Pickens at the time. On his father’s side, ancestors dated to early settlements in the Pickens and Oconee area back to the 1790s with the James and Sarah Boon McKinney and John and Peggy Gravely families. Locally, the family later donated a window in Grace United Methodist Church featuring callings to ministry in Chaplain Gravely’s memory. After World War II, Gravely Memorial United Methodist Church was formed and remains active outside Spartanburg. Kate Gravely and children moved later to Walhalla, where the children attended public school. Horace Jr. was a James F. Byrnes scholar and a graduate of Wofford College.

As a sales engineer, he retired from Bound Brook Bearing Co. but worked in recent years part-time at Lowe’s in Seneca. An avid astronomer who volunteered in science classes in area public schools, he belonged to the Clemson Area Amateur Astronomers. Horace was also a Mason and a member of the Lion’s Club. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Gravely is survived by his daughters: Janine Wallace of Waxhaw, N.C.; Joanna Linn of Winston Salem, N.C.; Amanda McCall of Mountain Rest and Amenie Nicoll of Alpharetta, Ga.; as well as his brother John Gravely of Hertford, N.C.. He was grandfather to 12 grandchildren. His first cousins in the Upstate are Donald K. Gravely and W. David Gravely of Pickens and Dorothy D. Huff and Betty D. McWhite of Greenville. Besides his wife and parents Horace Jr. was preceded in death by his son Edward Gravely, his sister Martha Willis and grandson Drew Wallace.

Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Walhalla, where he was a long-time member, and burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Pickens. GERALD RICHARD

JAMES (BOOZY)

LIBERTY — Gerald Richard James (Boozy), 78, died Feb. 17, 2015.

He was a loving and devoted husband to Roberta Bowman James for 53 years. They have four children, Richard Arling James (Jody Pinion), Jerri James Durham, Sherri James Collins (Darrell), and Kristi James Cooley (Rocky). He was the proud “Papa” of five grandchildren: Ethan, Emily, and Evan James, Hailey Collins, and Meagan Fogarty.

He was preceded in his passing by his father and mother, Richard Ansel and Grace Stokes James, as well as his sister, Juanita James Barnes.

Born in Liberty on Feb. 13, 1937, he remained a Liberty resident his entire life. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1956 and attended Clemson University. The quintessential family patriarch, he was a supervisor at American Enka, and retired with BASF.

A member of Eastside Baptist Church for his entire 78 years, he was an active member of the Covenant Sunday School class. He enjoyed singing in the choir, and visiting others in their time of sickness. He was an accomplished gardener. He also enjoyed camping and traveling with his family.

Funeral services to honor his life were held at Eastside Baptist Church in Liberty on Friday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. Graveside services followed at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

WILLIAM V. FOX, JR.

PICKENS — William Vonley Fox, Jr. 73, husband of Karen Ann Snook Fox, died Saturday, Feb 21, 2015, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Born in East Wallingford, Vt., the son of the late William Vonley Fox, Sr. and the late Florence Bowen Fox, Mr. Fox retired from Teleflex Machining.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of the home, are a son, Ronald Keith Fox of Pickens; a daughter, Jessica Elizabeth Atkinson of Pickens; a sister, Helen Fox of Vermont; and four grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fox was predeceased by a son, Kevin Vonley Fox.

STEWART HOLCOMBE

PICKENS — Mary Jane Stewart Holcombe, 81, of Moorefield Memorial Highway, wife of the late J.B. Holcombe, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Ivy W. Stewart and Nora Lee Holt Stewart.

Mrs. Holcombe was retired from Kent Manufacturing, Runnymede Plant, and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Martha Porter (Jim), Cless Holcombe and Melissa Cartee all of Pickens; five grandchildren; Leanne Barron, Eric Holcombe, Ashton Cartee, Stuart Cartee and Caleb Cartee; three great grandchildren, Marlee Barron, Jace Holcombe and Brody Adams.

Mrs. Holcombe was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Porter; a brother, Buster Stewart; and three sisters, Iva Stewart, Betty Stewart and Azilee Stancil.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 21, at noon in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

JAMES HAROLD TURNER

EASLEY — James Harold Turner, Sr., 79, of Easley, widower of Edna Howard Turner, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2015.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late John D. and Ella Taylor Turner.

James was a member of Pickens Church of God for more than 20 years and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by two daughters, Sheila Moore and Katrina Owens; two sons, Jamie and Jimmy Turner (Hope); nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Harold McClain; a sister, Diane Young; and three brothers, Calvin, J.B. and Gerald Turner.

In addition to his parents and loving wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy McClain; two sons-in-law, Ronnie Owens, and Mark Moore; three sisters, Nancy Hamby, Ruth Holder, and Louise Durham; and a brother, Charles Turner.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Northwest chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery.

ARNOLD M. CHAPPELL

EASLEY — Arnold McWill Chappell, 86, of 121 Belmont Circle, died on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, surrounded by his family.

Born in Rosman, N.C. he was the widower of Evangeline “Vangie” Beck Chappell and a son of the late Walter and Nettie Lyday Chappell. He retired from Platt Saco-Lowell.

His hobbies through the years included hunting, fishing, coin collecting and playing the fiddle.

Surviving are two daughters, Bea Roach of Easley, and Sherry Chappell of Greenville; five sons, Kenneth Watkins, Michael Chappell, Tony Chappell, and Dennis Chappell all of Easley, and Gary Chappell of Pickens; three sisters, Ophelia Galloway, Jewell Shelton, and Janell McCall; two brothers, Junior and Donald Chappell; 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, George Harold Watkins and Johnny Watkins, and three grandchildren, Jamie Chappell, Sandy Watkins, and Jeffrey Watkins, and a great granddaughter, Kayla Watkins, and three brothers, Ralph, Claude, and Melvin Chappell.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Chappell were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
