The event, which will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. on the outdoor stage, will be hosted by Gregg “Buffalo” Barfield, Michele Barfield and Steve McGaha — the “Wizards of Odd.” The trio will present a wide variety of musical workshops and musical performances for kids of all ages.
All kids are invited to participate in a “Found Instrument Workshop,” from 11-11:45 a.m., where they will learn to build and play a host of homemade folk instruments like kazoo, spoons, the jug and tub bass.
Everyone will be able to join the band and play with their instruments during Buffalo Barfield’s Jug Band Jam at 1 p.m.
Lucy Allen and Marshall Goers will perform a set of traditional children’s folk music from their latest CD, “Won’t See Tadpoles Covered in Fur,” from noon-12:30 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m., there will be a Traditional Bluegrass and Old-Time Talent Show sponsored by the co-host group Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music (POSAM). The show is open to all youth high school age and under. Registration is be open at YAM schools, or from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on-site the day of the festival.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy the opportunity to hand paint Colonial Spanish Horses. This is the small yet mighty horse that carried the Pony Express rider, the mountain man, the cowboy and the Native Americans on their journey through American history.
Throughout the day there will be other events to take part in as well. Volunteers from various Pickens County fire departments will be on hand with their “Safety House” demonstration. The interactive mobile device will teach children the proper techniques and safety strategies that are crucial to survival when dealing with a home fire situation.

The old gristmill and other demonstrations will be running from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The water-powered 1845 gristmill is one of the finest examples of 19th century technology in the Upstate and operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. The mill will be running throughout the day. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.
The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, basket-making, pottery, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, metal-smithing, leather-working, bee keeping and more.
Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just three miles north of Pickens or 5.5 miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway 11 off U.S. Highway 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Hagood Mill is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
