Dale Stewart
Easley — Dale Anthony Stewart, 61, of 1319 Stamp Creek Road, Salem, died away Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Baptist Hospital Easley.
Born in Asheville, N.C., Dale was the son of the late James Herbert, Sr., and Mildred Partin Stewart. He was a 1968 graduate of Clyde A. Erwin High School and a 1974 graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute. Dale was a real estate broker and appraiser and co-owner of Stewart Realty Services. A member of First Baptist Church, Easley, he belonged to the Concepts Sunday School Class. He was also an ordained minister and was involved with the prison ministry of the church. Dale and his wife were members of the Travel Masters Camping Club.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Ball Stewart of the home; two daughters, Lori Stewart Nolte of Walterboro, and Leah Stewart Worthy of Easley; a sister, Marlene Stewart of Asheville; five grandchildren, Emily Paige Stewart-Foxx, Marilyn Elizabeth Nolte, Ella Marie Nolte, Dean Monroe Worthy and Laile Elisa Worthy; and his children-in-law, Jimmy Nolte, Jason Worthy and Lynn Foxx.
In addition to his parents, Dale was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Dale Stewart, and by a brother, James Herbert Stewart, Jr.
Funeral services were 11:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Easley, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams, the Rev. John Wayne Revis and the Rev. Carroll Melton officiating. Entombment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Ari White
Easley — Ari Carson White, 35, of 207 South Fourth Street, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, in Canton, N.C.
Born in Lincolnton, N.C., a son of James H. White, Sr., of Pickens and the late Evelyn Waters White, Ari was formerly employed with Preception Corp.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are two brothers, James H. White, Jr., of Easley and Walter Cory White of Powdersville; and three sisters, Beverly Turner of Pickens and Wanda Loggins and Shelby Duncan, both of Easley.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Willie Baines
Pickens — Willie Hickey Baines, 85, of 138 Rosemond Street, died Wednesday at Redeemer Health and Rehab in Pickens.
Born in Morristown, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Lola Addie Jenkins Hickey. She was retired from the S.C. Forestry Department where she was a tower operator at the Corbin Mountain Forest Fire Tower.
Surviving are a son, Tommy Hendrix of Lawton, Okla.; two sisters, Mary Hannah and Clara Snider, both of Pickens; two brothers, L.T. Hickey of Central and Edward Hickey of Greenville; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Dillard Hendrix; her second husband, James S. Baines; and a son, Calvin Hickey.

James M. Chambers, Sr.
Easley — James Marion Massey Chambers, Sr., 75, of 314 Cedar Circle, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at his home.
Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Guss and Josie Chambers and Luther and Gladys Cheek Massey. Mr. Chambers was a retired mechanic having work most of his career with Chrysler and Honda Dealerships. He was also a U.S. Army Veteran.
The family would like to thank Interim HealthCare Hospice for their compassion and exceptional care of Mr. Chambers.
Surviving is his wife of the home, Joyce Teat Chambers; his children, Jan C. Landreth (Lonnie) of Dacusville, Joan C. Czarnick (Donnie) of Easley, James M. “Butch” Chambers, Jr. (Kim) of Liberty, and John W Chambers (Penny) of Normal, Ill., Randel McCall (Ashley) of Easley and Jamie Watson (Mike) of Norris; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Melba Jean Chambers, five sisters and a brother.
A memorial service was held Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens.

Lt. Col. Paden Eskew Woodruff, Jr.
PICKENS — Lt. Col. Paden Eskew Woodruff, Jr. (U.S.M.C. – Ret.), 87, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.
Born August 9, 1924, in Pickens, he was the son of Dr. Paden Eskew Woodruff and Mildred Cox Woodruff. He attended schools in Pickens, Basking Ridge, N.J., Chillicothe, Ohio, and Gulfport, Miss., and graduated from Charleston High School. He attended Clemson University before entering the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1947. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from the Basic Officers School in Quantico, Va., where he was trained as an infantryman. After Basic School, he was company commander of the Communications Company, Hdqtrs Battalion, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C. At the same time, he was placed in charge of a base-wide track meet, where he was also assigned a company of stevedores and ammunition carriers. His company won the track meet. During his career in the Marine Corps, Col. Woodruff was a member of the “Old Corps”, a Marine Corps which was versatile and innovative because of its small size and the need to stretch its small budget. Among his many duties, he served as embarkation officer on the USS Randall in the Landing Force 6th Fleet; in various 2nd Marine Division staff billets and as Company H Commander, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Div; as Ass’t Regimental S-4 and Commander, Weapons Co., 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Div. in Japan; S-3 (Operations Officer) for the 7th Marines, 1st Marine Div. in Korea; Ass’t Prof. of Naval Science at Rice University; and advisor to the Republic of China Marine Corps in Taiwan. After his assignment in Taiwan, he graduated from the Senior Officers School in Quantico and was an instructor of amphibious warfare at the Extension School at Quantico. In 1963, he returned to sea duty as senior Marine on the staff of the commander of Amphibious Group 4, Atlantic Fleet, and participated in the Dominican Republic Expedition. He served as Ass’t Director of Training for the Landing Force Training Command (LFTC) of the Atlantic Fleet and later returned to Camp Lejeune to serve as commander of 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines during its tour as the Landing Force for the 6th Fleet, then Executive Officer of the 2nd Marine Regiment. He served a tour in Vietnam as G-4 Operations Officer with the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force. He retired from the Marine Corps after serving as Director of Administration and Logistics for the LFTC. For his military service, Col. Woodruff received the Bronze Star with combat “V,” Army Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Medal 1st Class, several letters of commendation and various theater medals. Upon retirement, Col. Woodruff obtained a Master’s degree in education from Clemson and became the assistant director/principal of the Pickens County Vocational Center from which he retired in 1987. He was active at First Baptist Church, Pickens, as a Sunday School teacher, and was Past Master, Keowee Lodge A.F.M., and Past District Dep. Grand Master, 16th Masonic District, Ancient Free Masons of S.C.
Col. Woodruff is survived by his wife of 63 years, Yvonne Eiland Woodruff of Pickens; his daughter, Carolyn W. Rogers and her husband, Marshall, of Rock Hill; his sons, Paden E. Woodruff, III and his wife, Joy, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Robert R. (Tex) Woodruff and his wife, Martha, of Atlanta, Ga.; his grandchildren Zachary W. Rogers and his wife, Elizabeth, of Atlanta; Paden E. Woodruff, IV and his wife, Brittany, of Tallahassee, Fla.; Hunter I. Rogers and Emily J. Woodruff, both of Los Angeles; Johnathan L. Woodruff of Tallahassee, Fla.; and Isaiah D. Woodruff and Nathan L. Woodruff of Atlanta; his brothers-in-law, C. Dean Cullison of Dataw Island, and Robert L. Eiland of Drew, Miss.; his sisters-in-law Juawiece E. Devine of Anderson, and Nancy E. Utz and her husband, Richard, of Murrells Inlet, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mildred W. (Mimi) Cullison.
Col. Woodruff’s funeral service was held on Saturday, April 23, at 4 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Pickens. Burial with military honors followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Pickens.

Homer C. Masters
Pickens — Homer C. Masters, 92, of 902 Fox Squirrel Ridge Road died on Thursday, April 21, 2011.
He was born in the Table Rock area of Pickens County, the son of Abner Pickney Masters and Ola Chastain Masters. Mr. Masters retired from Union Bleachery in Greenville. He was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II under the Command of General George Patton. He was a tank commander in the 82nd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and participated in six major battles including the Battle of the Bulge and the invasion of Normandy. He was the recipient of a number of medals including The Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Athaleen Porter Masters; two daughters, Janice Stewart (Mendel) and Martha Pagragan (Ernie); and a son, Michael Masters (Kathie). He was known affectionately as PaPa to his seven grandchildren, Lisa Dalton, Hal Stewart, Jan Barinowski, Lori Newman, Greg Anthony, Leslie Masters, and Corey Masters and 13 great grandchildren.
Mr. Masters was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Florine O’Shields, and two brothers, Loman Masters and Clifford Masters.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, conducted by a grandson, the Rev. Hal Stewart. Grandchildren served as pallbearers.

H. Fred Gilstrap
Cateechee — Henry Fred Gilstrap, aged 78, died April 21, 2011.
Fred was retired from Cline Corporation and was a member of Liberty Masonic Lodge #235 A.F.M. He was born in 1932 in Pickens County and was a son of the late Robert Tillman and Essie Simpson Gilstrap.
He is survived by his wife Betty Gilstrap, of the home; daughters Ruth Ann Dawson (Bob), Angie Ross (Andy), Sherri Helton (Tim); sons Ronnie Bagwell (Angela) and Chris Bagwell (Marilyn); 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with Masonic Rites followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Carolyn Bolt
Easley — Mrs. Carolyn Grace Bolt, 74, wife of the late Charles Robert Bolt, of 204 Katherine Street, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late George W. and Ida Volrath Turner, Mrs. Bolt retired from Mayfair Mills and was of the Baptist faith. Carolyn had a passion for poetry and was an Elvis fan.
Surviving are a daughter, Lynda Owen (Timothy) of Pickens; one son, Rick Bolt of Easley; one brother, Joe Turner of Easley; two sisters, Frances Looper and Sarah Brezeale, both of Easley; and two grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, Madison and Ethan Owen.
Graveside services were 12 p.m. Monday in Graceland West Cemetery.

Rick E. Dabbs
Liberty — Rick Dabbs, 55, of Liberty, died Friday, April 15, 2011 at his residence.
Born in Poplar Bluff, Mo., he was the son of Glenn Edward and Erma Boone Dabbs of Fisk, Mo. Rick grew up in Fisk, Mo. and was a former resident of Osage Beach, Mo. and New Braunfels, Texas. He was a master carpenter and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Rick loved fishing, gardening, hunting and martial arts and he had served in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving in addition to his parents, are his wife Karen Whyne Dabbs of the home; three daughters, Summer Phillips, Mellissa Braham and Jessica Sweeney; three sons, Marcus Dabbs, Shawn Sweeney and Brenndan Sweeney; one brother, Mark Dabbs; five grandchildren, Lexi Dabbs, Paige Davis, Reagan Dabbs, Makayla Sweeney and Cassidy Mae Braham.

Eugene “Gene” Bryant
Liberty — Eugene Edward “Gene” Bryant, 85, of 212 Odell Street, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Liberty he was a son of the late Ernest and Theatta Bates Bryant. He was a 1947 graduate of Liberty High School, and was retired from BASF. Mr. Bryant was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served in the South Pacific on the George E. Davis Destroyer Escort during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf. He was an avid Clemson Tiger fan, and throughout his life he loved camping and golf. Mr. & Mrs. Bryant were longtime members of Calumet Baptist Church where he was a member of the Pace Bible Class.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Nathalee Dodgens Bryant of the home; a daughter, Gail Bryant Ponder of Liberty; a son, Tim Bryant of Myrtle Beach; four sisters and three brothers in law, Helen Mahaffey of Liberty, Betty and Wayne Davis of Clemson, Shirley and Jordan Duncan of Easley, and Carol and Wallace Clardy of Liberty; four grandchildren, Kristi Baker and her husband Chris of Liberty, Brent Whitaker of Myrtle Beach, Kylie Deppen and her husband Jason of New York, N.Y., and Josh Ponder and his wife Kelly of Dacusville; one beloved and very special great grandson, Tyler Baker.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Bryant were 3 p.m. Sunday at Calumet Baptist Church. Burial with military honors followed the service at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

William Paul Evett
Pickens — William Paul Evett, 82, of Pickens, SC died Friday, April 22, 2011 at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.
Born in Pickens he was a son of the late Ivy and Ella Aiken Evett. He was a used car dealer and loved Nascar racing.
Surviving are his wife, Coleen Barkley Evett of the home; a special little girl, Autum Wells, our pride and joy who is 10 years old and called us Papa and Nana.

Wendy L. Wilson
Liberty — Wendy Leanne Wilson, 29, of 137 Bryant Street, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 21, 2011.
Born in Richmond, Ind. she was the beloved daughter of Darrell G. and Brenda Turner Wilson. Wendy had many interests, some of which were travel, the beach, and spending time with nature. One of her greatest passions in life was her beloved dogs, Spencer, Schatzi, and Sophie Grace. Wendy’s generous nature, and loving kindness will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving in addition to her parents of the home, are her fiancé, Damien Kelley of Northern Ireland; a grandmother, Retha Johnson of Richmond, Ind., and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by three grandparents, Ronald Wilson, and Dave & Rosie Turner.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Wendy were 11 a.m. Monday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Memory Gardens in Clemson.

Larry Bowers
Six Mile — William Larry Bowers, 56, of 241 Duncan Road, died on Saturday, April 23, 2011.
Born in Oconee County, he was the son of William Donnie Bowers and the late Dorothy June Galbreath Bowers.
Larry was a loving Husband, Father, Poppy, Brother and a strong Christian Man. He was a member of Liberty Church of God of Prophecy.
Surviving in addition to his father, are his loving wife, Teresa Smith Bowers; his two daughters, Rena Bowers and Rebecca Bowers; his granddaughter, Kayleigh Ann; his sisters, Annette Grant and Jan Alexander; and his brothers, William Clark and Joe Bowers.
He was preceded in death by his brother Randall Morris Bowers.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at Liberty Church of God of Prophecy. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will be at the home.

Bernice W. Massingill
Easley — Mary Bernice Waldrop Massingill, 92, formerly of Hollingsworth Drive, wife of the late William Clyde Massingill, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Countryside Village.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late William Ernest Waldrop and the late Dura Annie Mae Powell Waldrop Crenshaw, Mrs. Massingill retired from the Alice Plant of Alice Manufacturing Company after more than 50 years of service. She was a member of Park Street Baptist Church where she belonged to the Joy Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two sons, William Wayne Massingill (Sylvia Jean), and Robert Ronald Massingill, Sr., (Brenda), all of Easley; a sister, Gertrude Cartee (Grady) of Liberty; three grandchildren, Don Massingill, Robert Massingill, Jr., and Tami MassingillSmith (Danny); and two great-grandchildren, Spencer Levi Massingill and Haley Marie Massingill.
Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with the Rev. Dr. Alton Nix and the Rev. Lewis Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery.

Nicholas Monte
Easley — Nicholas Monte, 87, died on April 25, 2011 at Oakmont Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 23, 1924, he was a Veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army Infantry in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1945.
Nicholas is survived by his wife Mary Monte and his son Nick of the home residence of Easley; his daughter Nancy Lindley and her husband David of Greenville; his grandson Chris Brechbiel and his wife Charley of Anderson and two great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers Nunzio, Frank and Michael Monte and sisters Lena Monte and Mary Gentry.
The family has stated that there will be no funeral but will have a private ceremony at a time unannounced in the future.
