Groundbreaking scheduled for Rock Art Center at Hagood Mill
PICKENS — Pickens County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the South Carolina Rock Art Center at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, at the Hagood Mill site, located at 138 Hagood Mill Road in Pickens.
The Rock Art Center will house Native American petroglyphs which exist on a rock face located on the Hagood Mill property.
“The addition of the Rock Arts Center to Pickens County’s landscape will bring an increased number of visitors to the area,” said Pickens County administrator Chap Hurst. “The Center will add to the cultural and historical landmarks which already exist at the mill.”
Allen Coleman, executive director of the Pickens County Museum, said the Rock Art Center will be a boost to tourism in Pickens County.
“We are thrilled that construction has officially begun on the Rock Art Center,” Coleman said. “This project will bring tourists from around the world who are interested in petroglyphs and Native American culture.”
Funding for the project is the result of private donations and tourism-designated funds by Pickens County.
