PICKENS — The Pickens County Museum of Art and History recently announced new art classes with instructor Jo Johnston.

Johnston will guide her class through an introduction and exploration of watercolor techniques in either or both sessions.

Fun Ways to Paint with Watercolor; Part One: Thursdays, 10 a.m. – noon on Aug. 20, 27, Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24.

Fun Ways to Paint with Watercolor; Part Two: Thursdays, 10 a.m. – noon on Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19 and Dec. 3 (No class on Thanksgiving Day).

These six-week classes being held in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio are designed to make painting with watercolor fun and easy. Instructions will cover the basics plus cover several creative ways to use watercolor for different effects. If you have always wanted to try watercolor, or improve your painting skills, this class will offer lots of encouragement to help you achieve your artistic goals. Sign up for one or both sessions. A list of supplies will be provided at the first class. This class is open to adults only. Instruction will be based on the painter’s skill level. Tuition for each class is only $88 ($78 for museum members). Pre-registration is required. Tuition must be paid prior to the first class.

Johnston works predominantly in water media and collage. She worked as a freelance artist in high school and, after graduating from Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, spent 25 years working in the commercial art field for newspapers and furniture retail chains. Upon retiring from commercial art, she has enjoyed exploring the fine arts. She has taught art courses for both community college and retirement center groups. Johnston lives on a small farm in Pickens County and is currently working in mixed media featuring subjects that reflect some part of the not too distant past.
