LIBERTY — A Greenville man facing charges in Pickens County added another count to his record on Monday, when police say he fled as he was being extradited from out of state.

Bobby Bruce Rains, 32, of 206 Vale Road, was being moved[cointent_lockedcontent] from an airplane to a transport vehicle at the Pickens County Airport in Liberty after being extradited from Tennessee when he fled on foot shortly before noon, according to Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe.

Hashe said a deputy was escorting Rains, who was restrained around the waist with handcuffs and a waste chain, when he ran into a wooded area. Two deputies gave chase, and Rains was arrested in a field a short distance from the airport without further incident, Hashe said.

Hashe said it is common for prisoners being transported in small aircraft to have their feet and legs unrestrained “due to the need for mobility in case of emergency during takeoff and landing.”

In addition to his previous Pickens County charges of possession of methamphetamine and providing false information to law enforcement, Rains was charged Monday with escape. He was being held at the Pickens County Detention Center on Tuesday.

Rains is also wanted in Greenville County and Oconee County, as well as by the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services and the Liberty Police Department, according to Hashe.[/cointent_lockedcontent]
