SIX MILE — Main Street in Six Mile, from Liberty Highway to Six Mile Baptist Church will be closed on Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m for this year’s Issaqueena Festival.
Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy live music and entertainment, a car show, arts and crafts vendors, tasty treats and more.
Once belonging to the Cherokee Nation, the town of Six Mile received its name from the Indian Maiden Issaqueena according to folklore. Legend has it that Issaqueena rode her horse on a journey of ninety-six miles to warn Francis Allen, an English trader, of a planned Cherokee attack on his fort.
Issaqueena numbered the creeks she crossed until she reached the fort in the area she labeled Ninety Six. There is still a town named Ninety Six, and many other “number names” on the path to it, these include Mile Creek, Six Mile, Twelve Mile River, and Six and Twenty Creek.
Mayor John Wade is scheduled to kick-off the event at 9:30am. From 9:45 – 10:00, festival goers can enjoy some Hot Foot Clogging followed by Forget Tomorrow from 10:15 – 11:00. Another round of Hot Foot Clogging will take place from 11:15 – 11:30 and the Reedy River Intertribal will perform Cherokee dancing, drumming and storytelling from 11:45 – 12:30.
Anyone who has entered a vehicle in the car show will be able to hear the Car Show Announcements from 12:30 – 12:45. Entry into the car show is to be paid in canned goods that will be donated to the food pantry at Six Mile Baptist Church.
Mt. View Baptist Quarter will entertain crowds from 1:00 – 1:45 followed by the final act of the day, Cane Creek Bluegrass Band, from 2:00 – 3:45.
The Issaqueena Festival in Six Mile is family oriented with fun for everyone.
