PICKENS — Eleven teams participated in the seventh annual Charles F. Rogers Scholarship Award Golf Tournament held at Pickens Country Club on May 21.
The event, which is held annually, raised money for scholarships that will be awarded to Pickens High School basketball team members who plan to further their education. A senior from the varsity girls team as well as a senior from the varsity boys team will receive the scholarship awards this month.
This will be the eighth year the scholarship has been presented in honor of the late Charles Rogers, a man who gave so much to Pickens High School as a player and coach for so many years.
“Charles Rogers’ legacy lives through this award,” said PHS varsity girls coach Butch Morris. “It’s the least we can do for a man that gave his time and talents to Pickens High School as well as our community.”
The first place finishing team consisted of Jason Bagwell, Floyd Ayers, Mark Allison and David Allison. Second place went to Hamp Summey, Mike McCoy, Neil Childress and Danny Brown. Third place team members were Chad Roper, Lem Blackwell ,Andrew Herman and Matt Blouiar. Other winners were David Allison and John Kelsey for longest drive and Charles Hunter and Robert Pilgrim for closest to the pin.
Of course, the big winners from the tournament are the future recipients of the scholarship award, as donations brought in more than $2,700. The first year the award was given in 2004, seniors received $200. This year the scholarship award will be $1,000. The scholarship money they receive can be put towards their college education.
“This scholarship fund continues to grow, thanks to so many caring and giving individuals,” Morris said.
“Special thanks to Rodney Wakefield for coordinating this event again this year,” Morris said. “A sincere thank you to all the participants and the wonderful volunteers that made this tournament run so smoothly.”
Also in attendance at the tournament was William Rogers, an older brother of Charles.
Donations for the Charles Rogers fund can be turned in at Peoples National Bank in Pickens.
