COUNTY — The School District of Pickens County called a special meeting of its board of trustees to convene Tuesday night, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m.
Paramount on the agenda was the renovation plan for the 1939 Easley High School building.
SDPC communications director Julie Thompson said the district is looking at an option that will include renovations to the 1939 building. 
Shannon Cassell, an EHS graduate who has helped organize a group of local residents in favor of saving the 1939 EHS building, affectionately known as the ‘39ers, was optimistic entering Tuesday night’s meeting.
“They’ve listened to our wishes and have been in contact with myself and others in our group on the details in the new building proposal,” Cassell said of district leadership earlier Tuesday. “The planning has to remain confidential until all parties involved agree to the terms and conditions. We hope that all goes well in the meeting tonight. I’m currently confident that the school board will make the best decision for Easley’s future by preserving its past.”
Based on reports from Bob Folkman in the SDPC scheduled meeting held on Monday, January 23, 2010, it appeared that saving the 1939 EHS building would put undue financial burden on the budget, not to mention putting the building plan behind schedule time-wise.
When asked about these key points, board chairman Alex Saitta said, “I don’t know. Dr. Hunt has taken the initiative to create alternatives. He has drawn up the proposals. I have the same questions.”
Prior to the public portion of Tuesday night’s SDPC meeting, board trustees met to discuss candidate applications as the search for a new superintendent continues. The deadline for applications was Tuesday.
