Ann Holder
Pickens — Cynthia “Ann” Bolding Holder, 50, of 403 Garvin Street, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Margaret Norris Bolding of Pickens and the late Charles Bolding. Ann was a homemaker and member of Bethany Church of God.
Surviving is her husband, George H. Holder of the home; a daughter, April Dodgens (Stephen) of Pickens; a son, Matt Holder (Misty) of Pickens; three grandchildren, Madison, Maggie-Grace, and Jonathan Holder; and a brother, Stanley Bolding.
In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a brother, Sammy Bolding.
A service to celebrate Ann’s life will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home with burial to follow in Cedar Hill Holiness Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daniel Clardy
Liberty — Daniel K. Clardy, 62, of 837 Black Bottom Road, died on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
Born in Liberty he was a son of the late Colie L. and Eunice Owens Clardy. Mr. Clardy worked in textiles for many years and later became a painting contractor. He will be remembered for his love to fellowship with people and his family. He faithfully attended The Church of God of Central.
Surviving are three sons, Mike Clardy of Easley, Shane Clardy and his wife Kelly of Seneca, and Colie Clardy of Liberty; three sisters, JoAnn Mckee and Jane Kay both of Mauldin, and Barbara Rampey of Liberty; four brothers, Kenneth Clardy of Liberty, Boyce Clardy of Simpsonville, Skeeter Clardy of Easley, and Wayne Clardy of Liberty; his longtime companion, Peggy Rothel of Easley; six grandchildren, Jessica, Scott, Chad, Andrew, Kristin, & Emma Clardy; a great granddaughter, Makayla Clardy.
Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Clardy will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the home of Larry & Barbara Rampey, Golden Creek Road, Liberty SC 29657.

Robert E. Volk
Easley — Robert E. “Poppie” Volk, 74, of 112 North Seventh Street, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 at his home.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Theodore Richard and Loretta Rindge Volk, Mr. Volk retired as a home repairman and was a member of the Easley Moose Lodge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Surviving are three daughters, Tamara Pace, Kerry-Lee Volk-Smith and Angie Soulsby, all of Easley; a sister, Carol Clark of Florida; and two grandchildren, Cody Pace and Tori Pace.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Volk was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Mihle.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson with the Rev. Christie Gravely officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

Kyle Reese Clark Sloan
Liberty — Kyle Reese Clark Sloan, 5 month old infant son of Matthew Wayne and Melissa Elaine Sloan died on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
Surviving in addition to his mother and father of Liberty are two brothers, Caleb Matthew Sloan and Gabriel Logan Sloan both of the home; grandparents, Donnie and Patty Powell of Liberty, and Michael and Fay Sloan of Liberty; great grandparents, Donald and Mary Powell of Norris; uncles, Jimmy Powell ( Monica ) of Six Mile, and Jason Sloan ( Brenda ) of Liberty; an aunt, Rebecca Carlos Saavedra ( Felipe ) of Liberty.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Church of Christ at 2207 Three & Twenty Road, Easley. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Liberty Mortuary.

Walter “Cannonball” Barton
Pumpkintown — Walter “Cannonball” Barton, 79, of Pumpkintown died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at his home.
Surviving include his wife Anna Lee of the home, four children; Brenda Helms of Monroe, N.C., Sherry Robinson and husband Micky of Pisgah Forest, N.C., Teresa Clark and husband Randall of Walhalla, Hugh Barton of Pumpkintown, one sister; Ellen Stepp of Hendersonville, N.C., a great friend Marcus Goode of Pickens, seven grandchildren; Kristy Jones and husband Jamie, Shannon Helms, Joe Robinson and wife Rebecca, Scott Clark, Samantha Barton, Allen Clark, Angie Barton, two great grandchildren; Kayley Robinson, Alyssa Jones, and a God granddaughter; Jessica Cox Bragg.
A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Holden Cemetery on See Off Mountain in Transylvania County, N.C.

William A. Nichols
Pickens — William “Billy” Nichols, 90, of Pickens, SC died Feb. 10, 2012.
A native of Spartanburg, he was the widower of Erin Ellis Nichols and a son of the late Samuel Scott and Mary Ellen Cox Nichols. He graduated from Spartanburg High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from Jan., 1940 to June, 1948. A veteran of WWII, he participated in the defense of Guadalcanal.
Trained a Radio-Radar Technician, he was attached to the U.S. Naval School in Washington, D.C. He studied at George Washington University and applied his engineering skills in design to the early rocket and satellite programs. He became head of the Electrical Design and Engineering Section of the Upper Air Physics Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory. From there he developed instrumentation for the Aerobee Rocket and OSO Satellite at Goddard Space Flight Center (later NASA) in Maryland. He then designed space flight instrumentation for Keithley Instruments in Cleveland, Ohio. His final challenge brought him home to the Upstate, working on the many engineering projects of John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels. He made Pickens his home for more than 35 years.
Surviving are his daughter Lynn, her husband Alex Tice; grandsons, Bill and Gavin and great-grandchildren Lucien, Lily and Liam.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Thursday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens, with Pastor Mark Bernshausen of Griffin Baptist Church officiating.

Mildred S. Holcombe
Easley — Mildred Stone Holcombe, 88, of Easley, wife of the late James A. Holcombe, Sr., died Feb. 25, 2012.
Born in Greenwood, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Edgar and Cora Slaton Stone. She was a graduate of Easley High School, Class of 1940. Mildred was employed with Glenwood Mills and retired after 40 years of service. She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church.
Gram is survived by her loving family, whom she dearly adored; her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Beth Holcombe, of Easley; her grandchildren, Betsy and Crady deGolian, of Lexington, Ky.; Meg and Chris Carter, of Greenville; her great grandchildren, Eliza and Will Carter; and Cooper deGolian. Mildred is also survived by her sisters, Dot (Roy) Griffith and Doris Ellison; a sister-in-law, Frances Stone; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Violet Porter and Margaret Grant; and her brothers, Gordon, Tom and Benny Stone.
Graveside services were conducted Monday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

“Wes” Birt, Sr.
Easley – Mr. Charles Wesley “Wes” Birt, Sr., 69, of 105 Allison Ct., husband of the late Marilyn Williams Birt, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 at Oakmont West in Greenville.
Born June 26, 1942 in Barnwell, he was the son of the late Charles and Mattie Lou Keel Birt Dyches. Mr. Birt was a retired printer with Dynagraphics, INC with 26 years of service and a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. In his early life he was involved in drag racing winning many events, and was a fan of NASCAR. He was a Past Master of Sam Poe Lodge.
Mr. Birt is survived by his daughters, Pamela Bagwell (Mike) of Greenville and Karen Birt of the home; son, Charles Birt (Sherry) of Florence; sister, Alice Willis (Ralph) of Barnwell; three grandchildren, Laura Bagwell, Christopher Birt and John Bagwell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 1 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road with Dr. Jim Spencer and the Rev. Rodney Graham officiating. Burial will follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Sula Bea Chastain O’Shields
Easley — Mrs. Sula Bea Chastain O’Shields, 100, of the Dacusville Community, wife of the late Oscar Jackson O’Shields, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 22, 2012 at her home.
Born Dec. 30, 1911 in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Bertha Masters Chastain. Mrs. O’Shields lived most of her married life in the Dacusville Community and was a homemaker. She was the oldest living member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Allison and Brenda Alverson of Dacusville and Judy Chapman of Easley; sons, Carmon O’Shields, Jerry O’Shields of Easley, Clyde O’Shields of Dacusville, brothers, A.C. Chastain of Greenville, Artis and Garvin Chastain of Marietta, and Carlee Chastain of Easley; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sons, Ronald, Kenneth, Bruce, Cecil and Tommy Ray O’Shields; grandchildren, Trent Mauldin and Brenda Lee Alverson; brothers, Clenith, Quentin, Claude and Fletcher Chastain; and sister, Eula Chastain O’Sheilds.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Shawn O’Shields, the Rev. Paul Turner and the Rev. Alvin O’Shields officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Escort of honor was her Sunday School Class, the Nancy King Class.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Tommy, Jeff, Ricky, Alton, Bill, and Don O’Shields, Steve and Ken Alverson.

Lula Mae Wilbanks
Six Mile — Lula Mae Benton Wilbanks, widow of Jim Wilbanks, died on Feb. 20, 2012 at the age of 83.
She was born in Brunswick County, N.C., a daughter of the late Walter and Buzzie Stanley Benton. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a son, Roger (Trish) Wilbanks of Walhalla; daughters, Brenda G. (Glen A.) Stephens of the home and Jo Ann (Rick) Moore of Pickens; grandchildren Lisa Harrell, Karen Ellenburg, Donna Fisher, Travis Fisher, Jennifer Howard, David Stephens, Tina Moore, Tammy Mitchell and Melissa Wilbanks; and 24 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m., Thursday at Gap Hill Baptist Church with burial in the church Cemetery.

Piedmont — Frances Bailey Holden, 86, of 105 Morningwood Lane, died on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenville she was a daughter of the late Robert Bailey and Lula Galloway Bailey and was the widow of Walden Griffin Holden, Sr., her husband of 59 years. She retired from Brandon Mill and was of the Baptist Faith.
Surviving are two sons, Walden “Jr.” Griffin Holden, Jr. of Liberty, and Robert “Bobby” Holden of Greenville; five daughters, Margaret Stonell of Greenville, Betty Ann Garren of Piedmont, Nancy Garren of Liberty, Vickie Green of Greenville, and Susan Holden of Piedmont; a sister, Aretta Smith of Easley; six granddaughters, nine grandsons, 30 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a brother, four sisters and two grandsons, Michael Greg Massey, and Michael Stonell.

Hobert Masters
Pickens — Hobert Masters, 97, formerly of Table Rock Road, and husband of the late Viola McJunkin Masters, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Nina Cassell Masters. Mr. Masters worked for Renfrew Mills. He was a member of Oolenoy Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
Surviving are his nieces and nephews, Joyce G. Holt (Frederick) of Easley, Ronnie McJunkin (Vickie) of Pickens, William McJunkin of Pickens, Roger McJunkin of Six Mile, Lynn McJunkin of Greenville, Ruby McJunkin of Greenville, Ray McJunkin, and Alvin McJunkin.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. in Oolenoy Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Howard and the Rev. Derril Robinson officiating.

Tony Earl Barrett
Easley — Tony Earl Barrett, 45, died Feb. 21, 2012.
Born in Detroit, Mich., he was a son of Clealon Hoxit Barrett and the late Aaron Earl Barrett.
Surviving in addition to his mother, are two sons, Travis and Bailey Barrett; one sister, Lisa Whitmire; one brother, Timmie Barrett; eight half sisters; and one half brother.
A funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday in the Palmetto Mortuary Chapel, 1313A Miller Road, Greenville, SC 29607. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Pickens.

Mildred Shirley
Easley — Mildred Ann Gillespie Shirley, 77, formerly of Easley, wife of the late Walker T. Shirley, Jr., died Thursday Feb. 23, 2012 at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville, N.C.
Born in Pickens County, Mrs. Shirley was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Lessie “Ripp” Gore Gillespie. She retired from Reliable Sprinkler in Liberty, and was a member of the Eastern Star of the Liberty Chapter. She was of the Baptist Faith.
Surviving are a son, Talmadge Shirley, III, of Easley; five sisters, Sue Davis, Betty and Margaret Gillespie, Jean Bracewell and Hilda McCall; two brothers, Junior and Tommy Gillespie; two grandchildren, Jennifer Huff and Jessica Thompson.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Shirley was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and Joel Gillespie.

Homer C. Marchbanks, Jr.
Six Mile — Homer Cleveland Marchbanks, Jr., 59, of 189 Saluda Circle Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sylva, N.C., he was the son of Homer Cleveland Marchbanks, Sr. and Lula Charlene Parris Marchbanks. Mr. Marchbanks was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran.
Surviving is his wife, Jeanne Kay Marchbanks, of the home; a daughter, Julie Marchbanks of Raleigh, N.C.; four sons, Tim Marchbanks of Anderson, Michael Marchbanks of Six Mile, Tony Marchbanks of Columbia and Chris Marchbanks of Seneca; 10 grandchildren; and three brothers, the Rev. Bobby Marchbanks, Charles Marchbanks, and Gary Marchbanks all of Six Mile.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Entombment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Suzanne Green McClure
Canton, Ga. — Margaret Suzanne Green McClure, age 46, beloved wife, daughter, sister, and aunt, died Feb. 17, 2012 due to complications from cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile ducts.
Suzanne was born in Charleston and grew up in Pickens. She was a 1983 graduate of Pickens High School and attended Greenville Technical College. Suzanne had lived in the Atlanta area for 26 years, was employed at Gerber Agri International in Marietta for 16 years, and was living in Canton, Ga. at the time of her passing. She loved vacationing in Ormond Beach, Fla., spending time outdoors and enjoying the companionship of her husband and their cats, and celebrating special occasions with her family.
Suzanne is survived by her beloved husband Eddie, mother Peggy Green, sister Terri Green Keasler and her husband Scott, a brother Jeff Green and his wife Roxanne, nephews John Keasler and Daniel Green.
She was pre-deceased by her father, Charles Green.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of
Suzanne’s life on Saturday, March 10, at Easley First Baptist Church, 300 East 1st Avenue, Easley SC 29640. Receiving of friends will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. in the church chapel.

Dr. David W. Mauldin
Pickens – Dr. David Wayman Mauldin, 80, of Pickens, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at his home.
Born in Liberty, he was the son of the late Wayman and Maude Chalmers Mauldin. Dr. Mauldin was a retired General Practitioner having served the Pickens area for over 37 years. He was a former Chief of Staff with Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Patricia Clayton Mauldin; a son David Clayton Mauldin (Kathy) of Conway; a daughter, Ashley Mauldin Bray (Warren) of Greenville; two grandchildren, Caitlyn Bledsoe and Ned Bray; and a sister, Milwee Schooley of Pickens.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Mauldin was predeceased by a brother, Mason Mauldin and two sisters, Tabitha Mauldin and Jessie Holder.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Central — Catherine Elizabeth Porter Riggins, 86, of 1743 Eighteen Mile Road and widow of Lawrence D. Riggins, died Sunday morning at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Anderson County she was a daughter of the late David and Dora Sentell Porter. Mrs. Riggins was a former employee of the Greek Gallery of Central and Pratt-Read and Company. She was a member of Refuge Baptist Church.
Surviving are sons, Roger (Doris) Riggins, Rodney Riggins, Randy (Donna) Riggins all of Central and Robbie (Wanda) Riggins of Seneca; daughters, Peggy (Wallace) Kelly of Pendleton, Jeanie Riggins of Central and Michelle Rogers of Seneca; brother, Doyle Porter of Denver, N.C.; sisters, Frances Moore, Alice Crawford and Martha Riggins all of Pendleton; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Riggins was predeceased by a great-grandson, Matthew Riggins.

Charles Garton
Easley — Mr. Charles Raymond Garton, Jr., 70, husband of Mary Carolyn Gannon Garton, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at his home.
Born in Charleston, W.Va., a son of the late Charles R. Sr. and Pearl Hess Garton, Mr. Garton attended West Virginia State College as well as Kent State and Greenville Technical College. He retired from Beverage Air and True Temper Corporation, after retirement, he worked with the Greenville County Sheriffs Department Work Release Program. Mr. Garton was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church. He was an avid fisherman, golfer and loved watching West Virginia football. Over the years he was a Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher, and Youth Leader.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home is one brother, Larry Garton of Anderson.
He was predeceased by a son, Richard Allen Garton.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Unity Presbyterian Church in Piedmont, conducted by the Rev. Mark Wright. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 1 in the Tyler Mountain Memory Garden Chapel, in Cross Lanes, W.Va.

Mr. Smith was born in Rhode Island, a son of the late John Michael Smith, Sr. and Margaret Eppley Smith. He was a Baptist.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Chance Smith, of Easley; two daughters, Tiffany Smith, of North Carolina and Lacie Smith, of Easley; and a grandson, Carter Daniel Frutchey, of North Carolina.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Denise Absher.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road. Burial will follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
