SIX MILE — A local newspaper called it the “greatest single tragedy ever to lay a blow on Pickens County,” and now the town of Six Mile will pass a resolution to remember the impact a devastating 1929 tornado had on the community.
On March 13, 1929, a deadly tornado swept through the town, killing nine. Among the victims were four members of the B.T. Garrett family and five from the Nelson Garrett family.
Many descendants and relatives of the victims still call Six Mile home and will be invited as special guests when Six Mile town council passes a resolution of remembrance for the Garrett families at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 13. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Six Mile Baptist Church pastor Ray Longenecker will give the invocation and speak about the Garrett families.
Also on hand will be Bill Holder, a Six Mile resident who was an adolescent eyewitness to the storm.
