EASLEY — The city of Easley will again host participants in the Wounded Warrior Program’s annual trip to Keowee Key next week.
Members of the group, from Camp LeJeune, N.C., will be at the J.B. “Red” Owens Recreation Complex around 2 p.m., Monday, June 18, and will depart at 3 p.m.
The soldiers’ route goes through Liberty, Norris, Central and Clemson before returning to U.S. 123 to go through Seneca and on to Keowee.
The group will spend a week there, recovering from both mental and physical wounds suffered while serving in the armed forces overseas.
On Tuesday, the city of Seneca will sponsor a veterans appreciation evening at Gignilliat Field, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature live entertainment and barbecue dinners.
Thursday, the group will tour Clemson University, including Memorial Park, where the names of all Clemson alumni who have given their lives in military service are commemorated. The group will also tour Clemson Memorial Stadium and run down the famous hill in the stadium while their names are featured on the scoreboard.
While at Keowee Key, the group will also have facilities available for golf, archery, water skiing, fishing and kayaking. Approximately 40 soldiers are expected.
Easley mayor Larry Bagwell asked at Monday night’s Easley city council meeting for those who can to come out and offer support to these American heroes.
In other news at Monday’s meeting, councilman Chris Mann announced that the city’s bike committee will meet at 8:15 a.m. this Thursday.
Mann also announced that an Easley Little League team, which he helps coach and on which his son plays, has won its district.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” Mann said. “This is a good team. They will represent Easley well.”
Also at Monday’s meeting, Easley resident Ed Paxton spoke to council about hsi concerns with alleged speed traps set by the city police.
“You’re just spending an officer’s time on an insignificant matter,” Paxton said.
In addition, a public hearing was held on the city budget for 2012-13. No member of the public offered any comments on the proposed budget.
Next month’s Easley council meeting is scheduled for July 23, because the mayor and other key city personnel will not be available on the regular monthly meeting date.
