MARGARET SPRAGG THURMAN
SOMERSET, KY – Margaret Spragg Thurman, retired professional accountant and auditor with Hg USAF/UFSC of Washington, D.C. died Monday, June 11, 2012, at The Neighborhood of Somerset Nursing Home.
Born in Somerset, Ky. on August 13, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Charles Victor and Isa Lee Spragg Thurman. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Somerset. During her retirement years, she held memberships in several committees of the church, including: The Memorial Fund, The Wills and Legacy Fund, The Trustees, The Staff Parish Committee and others, as well as 15 years as Teacher of the Volunteer Sunday School Class, an adult woman’s class that her mother had previously taught for over 40 years. She was a member of the Mae Roberts Missionary Circle, The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and an honorary member of the Kentucky Colonels. As a civilian member of the U. S. Air Force/AF Systems Command, she earned many commendations and medals during her 20 plus years of employment, starting at the lowest level of the professional Accounting and Auditing series and advancing to the highest level achieved by any female of the Command. Her career assignments included Dayton, Ohio where her duties included setting up commercial accounting procedures for the Base Accounting Office plus 21 tenants assigned to the base, auditing these accounts on a monthly basis. She soon transferred to the Air Force Contracting Office at the GE plant in Cincinnati, Ohio. At GE she advanced to the Deputy Accounting and Finance Officer, a position reserved for civilian employees, who audited and paid the contractor for work being done at that location. Over a period of 5 ½ years these payments amounted to several million dollars, some as large as 2-3 million in a single weekly check. Her next assignment was to the Hq AFASC Staff in Washington, D. C. located at Andrews AFB. There her duties included revising accounting manuals, auditing subordinate federal offices under the command and similar duties required of Hq. Command.
She is survived by a nephew, Donald P. (Ruth) Kinney of Pickens, a great niece Darlene (Roger) Youngblood and their two sons Austin and Alex of Easley, and her loving and extended family Heather (Donald) O’Shields and their two sons Will and Griffin of Easley. She is also survived by a niece, Rebecca (Becky) Elizabeth Thurman McCoy of Middleburg, Va. and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mary Susan Kinney of Easley and Claire Elizabeth (Betty) Thurman of Somerset, Ky. and brother Charles V. Thurman, Jr. of USMC retired of San Diego, Calif.
Her family wish to thank Sharon Reynolds and all her staff at the The Neighborhood of Somerset Assisted Living and the Neighborhood Nursing Home for the wonderful care and attention that they gave to Margaret. They also want to thank Bertha Hargis for her devoted care and concern in caring for Margaret during the last three months of her life.
Services were held in the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company on Saturday, June 16 at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Somerset City Cemetery.

WILLIAM SALOMONE
PICKENS – William Salomone, 92, of 108 Sycamore Ct., Pickens, died at 1:45 p.m. May 29, 2012 at his home.
Mr. Salomone was born Feb. 2, 1920 in Jersey City, N.J. to Dorothy and William Salomone. He worked at Colgate Palmolive for 32 years. His last employment was with Macy’s in Greenville. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pickens. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1942 – 1945 in Europe with CO. 1 – 253rd Inf., a life member of VFW Post 4303 in Keansburg, N.J. and was a member of the American Legion in Pickens.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth (Betty) of Pickens, a son Raymond of Perryville, Md., a son William Jr. of Olympia, Wash. and a daughter Angela Guazzo of Palm Coast, Fla., three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

SARA LEE PARSONS
CENTRAL – Sara Lee Parsons, 83, of Apt. F3, 62 Plaza died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.
Born in Easley, Sara was a daughter of the late William Asa and Betty Lee Lesley Turpin Parsons. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Samuel Andrew “Bud” Parsons; two step-brothers, J.C. Turpin and Bill Turpin; and two half sisters, Louise Bowen and Annie Mae Black.
Funeral services were 11 a.m., Friday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with the Rev. Kurt McPherson officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

PICKENS – Wilven Paul Byers, 83, of Connelly Road, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late James Perry Byers and Evie Anderson Byers. Mr. Byers was retired from The Singer Company and was a member of Griffin Baptist Church.
Surviving is his wife of the home, Virgle Jones Byers; a son, David W. Byers (Ruby) of Pickens; a daughter, Reba Faye Byers of Pickens; a grandson, Ethan Byers; two sisters, Lila Faye Trotter and Arvlee Finley both of Pickens; and a brother, B.F. Byers of Easley.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Alissa Byers, three brothers and a sister.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, June 14 at 4 p.m. in Griffin Baptist Church Cemetery.

PICKENS – Helen Hart Queen, 82, of 112 Ridgeview Dive, and wife of the late Rev. Jerry Queen, died Monday, June 11, 2012.
Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Van William Daniel Hart and Ethel Brock. Mrs. Queen was a retired Cosmetologist and member of Porter’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving is her brother, Floyd Hart (Dorothy) of Belton.

EASLEY – Elizabeth Gilstrap Owens, of 254 Old Cedar Rock Road, died Thursday, June 14, 2012.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Owens (Kay) of Macon, Ga. and John Owens (Becky) of Easley; five grandchildren, Matt Owens of Frankfurt, Germany, Wendy Butler of Macon, Ga., Jamie Owens of Easley, Shannon LeCroy of Pickens and Meredith Repko of Sanford, N.C.; 10 great grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Holder of Pickens.
Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, J.V. Owens.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 16 at 3 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

EASLEY – Mr. Bruce John Dyer, 55, died Friday, June 15, 2012 at his home.
Born in New York, N.Y., a son of Francis John Dyer, of Easley, and the late Denise Schwerdinlin Dyer, Mr. Dyer was employed with Hann Motor Company for 22 years and was previously employed with McCall Motors. Bruce was of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving are his father and many friends in the Easley area.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Dyer was predeceased by a brother, Gregg Dyer.

PICKENS – Horace Lee Roach, 57, of Shannon Circle, died Saturday June 16, 2012.
Born in Pickens County, he was the son of Floree Lesley Roach of Pickens and the late Harley Roach. Mr. Roach was a former employee of Total Fire Protection in Greenville and was a member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Kayla Adams (Josh) of Williamston; a son, Nathan Roach (Cari) of Easley; a stepdaughter, Sabrina Fuller of Easley; six grandchildren, Lexie and Caden Adams, Joseph and Willow Roach, Thomas Chase Odom, and Nicky Jordan; four sisters, Nancy Poole, Frances Foster, Sue Kelley, and Debra Camp all of Pickens; and two brothers, Harley Roach, Jr. and Danny Christopher Roach both of Pickens.
He was predeceased by his father; a grandson, Keelan Preston Odom Cruz; and three brothers, Terry Rickey Roach, Willie Ray Roach and Douglas Henry Roach.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 18 at 4 p.m. at Blue Ridge View Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

DR. L.M. DILL ALLISON, JR.

DUE WEST – Dr. L.M. (Dill) Allison, Jr., 94, of Due West, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at AnMed Health in Anderson.
Dr. Allison was born in Hickory Grove to the late Leon McDill Allison, Sr., and Jessie Whitesides Allison. He married the late Rachel Patterson Allison in 1941. They had a wonderful life of ministry together. A 1938 graduate of Davidson College, he taught high school until he joined the Army during WWII. Dr. Allison graduated from Erskine Seminary in 1949. He served churches in Sharon, Statesville, N.C., and Gastonia, N.C. before 1957, when he was elected Dean of Erskine Seminary. He earned the Th.M degree at Princeton Seminary, 1958, and the Th.D. degree from Union Seminary, 1960. In 1959, Dr. Allison assumed his work at Erskine Seminary as Vice President and Dean for 17 years and professor of Historical and Systematic Theology for 21 years. He served the ARP church on many boards and committees, and was Moderator of Synod in 1966. From 1977 until 1993, he was the supply pastor of Generostee ARP Church near Iva. Honors received by Dr. Allison from Erskine College include Doctor of Divinity degree, 1981; Academic Hall of Fame,1995; Distinguished Service Award, 1996; Alumni of the Year Award, 2001.
Surviving Dr. Allison are his two children; a son, Robert L. (Bob) Allison and his wife Bert of Pickens and a daughter, Marilyn Simmons and her husband David of Peru; a brother, John Allison of China Grove, N.C.; five grandchildren, David Allison (Rhonda), Mark Allison (Amanda), Matthew Simmons (Kseinja), Stephanie Edgar (Todd) and Michael John Simmons; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Allison, Liam Simmons, Naia and Anya Edgar.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Monday, June 18 at the Due West ARP Church with the Rev. Calvin Draffin and Dr. Randy Ruble officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

EASLEY – Edgar Malcom Martin, Sr., 83, of 113 Momart Drive, Easley (Dacusville Community), husband of Lois Brown Martin, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Greenville County, Mr. Martin was a son of the late William E. and Myra Hopkins Martin. He retired from Charlie Martin Septic Tanks. Mr. Martin was a member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church, and he was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years of the home, are three sons, Mike Martin and his wife, Judy, of Liberty, Charlie Martin and his wife, Carol, of Dacusville, and Senator Larry Martin and his wife, Susan, of Pickens; a daughter, Debbie Morris and her husband, Randy, of Easley; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Martin was predeceased by two brothers; three half-brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday, June 18 at Blue Ridge View Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Blue Ridge View Baptist Church Cemetery, Pickens.

BETTIE J. ABERCROMBIE
EASLEY – Bettie Jameson Abercrombie, 89, wife of the late William Leroy Abercrombie died Friday, June 15, 2012.
Mrs. Abercrombie was born in Pickens County a daughter of the late Burel Lee and Essie Ellison Jameson, graduated from Easley High School and retired from Palmetto Health Baptist Easley as office manager. She was a member of First Baptist Church Easley. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandma. She loved her family and was so proud of them. She had a huge heart for her family, her church and in her latter years a love of stray cats.
Survivng are one son; William L. “Roy” Abercrombie, Jr. and his wife Mary Carol of Greenville, one brother; Bill Jameson of Easley, three sisters; Ruby Jane Burnett of Greenville, Barbara Gantt of Easley and Iris Abercrombie of Anderson, two grandchildren; Travis Abercrombie and his wife Caci and Kristi McCurry and her husband Rich, four great-grandchildren Will and Owen Abercrombie and Jack and Hannah McCurry.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a brother B. L. Jameson and two sisters Nannie Mae McCollum and Mary Lee Nolan.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Easley on Thursday June 21 at 3 p.m. conducted by Dr. John Adams. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Thursday prior to the service in the narthex of First Baptist Church.
