Lieutenant Evan Robert Callahan

Pickens — 2LT Evan Robert Callahan, U.S. Army, 23, died Monday, May 15, 2017, while on active duty at Fort Benning, Ga.

Lt. Callahan was born in Boynton Beach, Fla., a son of Kevin Flanagan and

Jacqueline Jones Callahan of Pickens.

He was a 2012 graduate of Easley High School, where he participated in ROTC and was a member of the cross-country team. Lt. Callahan was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he received a BA in English and philosophy in May 2016. He was a member of the ROTC and National Guard. Evan loved writing, art and nature and aspired to teach English after his military service.

Survivors include his parents, Kevin and Jacqui Callahan of Pickens, and sisters, Kate Elizabeth Callahan and Kelli Lauren Callahan, also of Pickens. Grandparents include Walter John Callahan and Caroline Andryszczyk Callahan of Boynton Beach, Fla., Robert Jones and Rita Pappas Jones of Pickens, Michael E. Fonzo Schlesinger and Gwendolyn Reichbach of Charlotte, N.C., and Delores A. Eberhard-Fonzo of Reading, Pa.

Funeral services were held May 23 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel in Pickens, with the Rev. Don McQueen officiating. Burial with full military honors followed in the Veterans Garden of Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Myra Helen Reese

Cateechee — Myra Helen Reese, 85, of 211 North St., Central, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Pruitt Health and Rehab.

Born in Six Mile, she was a daughter of the late Jesse J. Sr. and Essie Morton Reese.

She worked as a seamstress for many years and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Jesse J. Reese Jr. of Six Mile, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 19 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel, with burial following at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Michael A. Lollis

Easley — Mr. Michael Anthony Lollis, 56, fiancé of Jackie Chandler Holbrooks, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, a son of Charles Julius Lollis, Sr. and Claudia Ann Owens Lollis of Greenville, Mr. Lollis was employed with ITG of Greenville. He had a great love and passion for Clemson football and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to fiancée of the home, four sons, Ryan Brett Holbrooks of Easley, Andrew Lee Holbrooks of Piedmont, Christopher Daniel Holbrooks (Yolanda) of Easley, and Matthew Brooks of Anderson; four daughters, Teela and Kayla Lollis of Ind., Amanda Dawn Holbrooks of Easley, and Miranda Brooks of Anderson; a brother, Brian Chuck Lollis(Stephanie) of Liberty; three sisters, Teresa Ann Lollis Childress (Daniel), and Julinda Suzanne Lollis Hopkins, all of Pickens, and Julie Ann Lollis Hoffman (Joey) of Travelers Rest; and one grandchild. Mr. Lollis was predeceased by a brother, Charles Julius Lollis, Jr.

Funeral services were held May 18 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

George Edward Hucks Sr.

Anderson — On Monday, May 15, 2017, George Edward Hucks Sr. of Anderson went to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 66. George will be lovingly remembered by his wife Brenda Hucks and his four children Amber Coulter, Michele Eller, George Edward Hucks, Jr., and Kristen Hague.

George will also be tenderly remembered by his 11 grandchildren, Philip, Zane, Elise, Emily, Carys, Micah, Elijah, Suzana, Ryland, Anya and Kinley; by his brothers, Clennon Hucks and Larry Hucks.

George was predeceased by his father, Earl Hucks, mother, Margaret Causey Hucks, and sister, Lejette Gatlin.

Margaret C. Owen

Easley — Margaret Cline Owen, 91, of Easley, wife of the late Richard H. Owen Jr., passed away Friday, May 19, 2017.

Born in Appalachia, Va., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Cline and Elizabeth McNutt Cline.

Mrs. Owen was a homemaker and member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was a people person who could light a room where ever she went, especially at the Legion Apartment Complex where she lived.

Surviving are her daughters, Patricia Gilchrist (Sammy) of Easley and Phyllis Ann Munn of Bullock, N.C.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Jim Cline of Portsmouth, Va., Sam Cline of Mesquite, Texas, and Joe Cline of Phoenix, Ariz.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son-in-law, Francis Munn and a brother, Bill Cline.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Finchley, Va.

Fred Dickson

Pickens — Fred Austin Dickson, 95, of 181 Cherokee Hill Ridge Road, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at his home.

Born in Mulberry, Fla., he was a son of the late Winchester Theodore and Sarah Jones Dickson.

Mr. Dickson retired from SC Electric and Gas, and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, where he served with the Sea Bees. One of his favorite hobbies was square dancing.

Surviving are his loving wife, Maude Timms Dickson of the home; a sister, Sarah Caldwell of Cartersville, Ga.; a brother, Edwin J. Dickson of Augusta, Ga.; also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his mother and father he was preceded in death by four sisters, Irma O. Dickson, Ruth Sharpe, Martha Wooten, and Betty Moore.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Dickson were held May 21 at Grace United Methodist Church with burial following at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Asilee C. Looper

Easley — Asilee Capell Looper, 91 of Easley and the Dacusville Community met Jesus face to face on May 19, 2017.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Lewis Bolt Looper in 1992 and second husband, Rev. Walter G. Dixon in 2008.

Born in Marietta on August 3, 1925 she was the youngest daughter born to the late John (Johnny) Homer Capell and Olivia (Ollie) McJunkin Capell. She was the remaining survivor of her seven brothers and sister.

Asilee attended Dacusville High School in Easley; Asheville Women’s College in Asheville, N.C., and Lander College (University) in Greenwood and graduated in 1946 with a Bachelors degree in Education. Her dream of a college education and a teaching degree were fulfilled and funded as a gift to her from her older brothers Hovey and Roy Capell during World War II. Her education continued to advance with a Master of Education degree awarded in 1977 from Clemson University.

Asilee was a life-long professional educator and began her career with new husband, Bolt, at Chapin High School in Chapin in 1946 teaching high school senior-level English. She returned to Pickens County in 1948 and taught at West End Elementary and Easley High Schools. After the birth of her two daughters, Judy and Janet, she resumed teaching in the Greenville County School System in 1957. She retired after 30 years of service either as a classroom teacher, a school principal, area curriculum developer and planner and a text book consultant. She was instrumental in developing learning game teaching methods in Greenville County Schools and filmed many segments for SCETV demonstrating her teaching styles. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority and served as a Group chairman for fund raising.

Asilee loved God and served Him in many roles at Cross Roads Baptist Church. She was a past WMU Director, Sunday School Director, Worship Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher, Pulpit Committee Member, VBS Director, GA Leader, Youth Leader, Homecoming Chairman, Church Historian and never said no to God or to His Church. She helped develop a Widows Support Group Ministry that is still active and maintained a church-wide greeting card ministry until her health failed. Asilee had a strong alto voice and loved to sing hymns, especially with the choir at Cross Roads Baptist Church and as part of the family quartet with brothers, Roy, Jay and Bruce Capell.

Asilee was an avid and exceptional gardener, homemaker, seamstress and chef. She loved to entertain her family and friends at her home and especially looked forward to the Christmas season where every room of her home had a themed decoration style. Her hand-crafted gifts, art, poems and letters were shared with her family for many years. She made a lasting difference in the lives of all those that knew, loved and respected her.

Asilee leaves behind her two daughters, Judy Lail and Janet Tindall, both of Easley, grandchildren Amanda Black (Melvin Whitmire) of Liberty, Michael Lail, Jennifer (Matt) Davis of Piedmont, and Fred Littlefield Tindall III (Sonny) of DeFuniak Springs, Fla; and six great-grandchildren, Laila, Geoffery and Katie Black of Liberty, Scarlet, Hailee and Gage Whitmire of Liberty. She loved and cherished her many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family recognizes the outstanding love, respect and care provided by the staff of Oakview Park Assisted Living of Powdersville and The Willows of Easley Assisted Living homes and the gracious assistance of Gentivia Hospice of Greenville.

A Celebration of Life Services was held May 22 at Cross Roads Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.

Brandon R. Hammond

Easley — Brandon Reed Hammond, 21, went home to be with The Lord on Monday May 15, 2017 after a life long battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Brandon was born in Greenville County, son of Gregory Keith Hammond and Deborah Shipman Weiss. Brandon was reared in the home of his grandparents The Reverend Leon and Edith Shipman. Brandon touched many lives including being an honorary member of the Belmont Fire Department in Greenville County and attended Harmony Baptist Church. Brandon loved life and was admired by his family and friends. Because of Brandon’s optimism and cheerful spirit he never complained about anything in life, including his illness. He was easy to love because he loved life and wanted the very best for everyone.

Survivors include his grandparents Reverend Leon and Edith Shipman; father Gregory Keith Hammond; his mother Deborah Shipman Weiss and step father Scott Weiss who was also his dedicated nurse. Dedicated caregivers include Aunt Donna and Uncle John Smith and Cousins Karla Johnson and Kayla Smith who were instrumental in his care. Also surviving is Grandmother Mary Hammond and Uncle Stanley Hammond whom Brandon loved dearly.

Marjorie R. Duncan

Six Mile — Marjorie “Marge” R. Duncan, 88, of Superior, Wis., formerly of Six Mile, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Solvay Hospice House, Duluth, Minn.

She was born October 1, 1928, in Ishpeming, Mich., daughter of Charles and Sanna Valimaki.

Marge’s clerical career started with Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Chicago, then Kemper Insurance Company, then opening a new Montgomery Wards store in Ishpeming, Mich., then Clemson University in Clemson, and retired from Pickens County Courthouse in Pickens.

She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles and visiting with people.

Preceding her in death was her husband, William in 1989.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 -2 p.m. funeral service, Sunday, May 28, 2017, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior.

Don V. Hendrix

Easley — Mr. Don Victor Hendrix, 78, husband of Nina Elizabeth Garrison Hendrix, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, May 22, 2017.

Born in Anderson County, the son of the late Cleo Essley and Blanche Bagwell Hendrix, Mr. Hendrix retired from Norfolk Southern Railway and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He was a US Air Force Veteran having served during the Korean War.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 58 years, are two sons, David Hendrix (Janice) of Travelers Rest, and Michael Hendrix (Angie) of Easley; a daughter, Rita H. Delegatti (Richard) of Greenville; a sister, Myrna H. Hughes (Joe) of Pickens; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hendrix was predeceased by his twin sister, Nancy H. Elrod.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military honors.

Nellie Merck

Greenville — Nellie Marie Merck, 94, of 200 Pennwood Lane, died Friday, May 19, 2017 at Heartland West Nursing Home in Greenville. Born in Liberty, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Emma Patterson Merck. She was retired from Dixie Packaging and a member of Wren Memorial Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services to honor the life of Miss Nellie Merck were held on May 22 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery in Liberty.

Ruth Allene Bradley

PICKENS — Ruth Allene Bradley, 90, of Pickens wife of the late Reverend Chester Penn Bradley, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Born in Rosman, NC, she was the daughter of the late Edward Drayton and Nora Randolph.

Surviving are her three step children; Waymond Eades (Elizabeth), Milford Eades (Betty), and Paul Eades (Teresa); and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bradley was also predeceased by her first husband, J.B. Eades; one stepson, Edward Eades; three stepdaughters, Blanch Simmons, Ruth Hester, and Gladys Howard (Jacob).

Funeral Services were held on Friday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at Bethany Church of God, with the Reverend Roger R. Stephens officiating. Interment followed the service at Mt. Moriah Calvert Baptist Church Cemetery in Brevard, NC.

PICKENS — Amanda Lou Edens Parker, 81, wife of Gary V. Parker, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, May 22, 2017.

Born in Pickens, she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Alice Grant Edens.

Surviving is her son; Stephen Parker(Tina); two granddaughters, Amanda Griggs (Wesley) and Ashley Parker (Heather) and one grandson, Berkley Parker; four great granddaughters, Maddalyn, Sydney, Trinity, and Ariella, and one great grandson, Joseph; and one sister, Velma Jeblee.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, with the Reverend Mark Kreiger and Wesley Griggs officiating. Interment will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will be at the home.
