Joseph E. Holliday

Central — Joseph Edward “Joe” Holliday, 74, of 136 Knoll View Road, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at his residence.

Born in Six Mile, he was a son of the late Blease and Hazel Hooper Holliday. He was a retired self-employed painter. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and his dog, Cheyenne. He also loved reading his bible and attending church at Six MileChurch of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen Perkins (Paul) of Lowell, N.C.; a son, Greg Holliday of Lowell, N.C.; a sister, Martha Holder of Six Mile; two brothers, Oliver Holliday (Geneva) of Greenville and Ricky “Doc” Holliday (Bev) of Cateechee; six grandchildren, Jason Laye, Jennifer Morton, Amanda Carlton, Joseph “Jodey” Holliday, Timothy Perkins and Melissa Hall; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Joseph Edward “Joey” Holliday Jr.; two sisters, Margie Sanders and Bethel Monkus; and a brother, Randy Holliday.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Holliday were held Sunday, July 30, in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel.

Nancy Allgood Johnson

Liberty — Nancy Allgood Johnson, 102, passed away Monday, July 24, 2017, at her home.

Born Sept. 22, 1914, in Anderson County, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of James Edward Allgood Sr., M.D., and Ruth Thompson Allgood. She was the widow of Albert L. Johnson Jr. and lived most of her life in Liberty.

A 1934 graduate of Winthrop College in intermediate education, she played the viola in the Winthrop Symphony Orchestra and later in the Anderson Symphony. She did postgraduate work at the College of William and Mary. Mrs. Johnson taught in the public schools of Anderson County and Liberty and gave private piano lessons.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her youngest son, Michael Allgood Johnson Sr.; her brother, James Edward Allgood Jr., M.D., and sisters, Catharine Allgood Young and Isabel Ruth Hunt.

She is survived by two sons, Albert L. Johnson III and James Edward Johnson Sr. (Adelaide) of Greenville; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Kiser Johnson of Greenville; six grandchildren, James Edward Johnson Jr (Carrie), Jennie Johnson Carrington (Lindsay), Michael Allgood Johnson Jr., Caroline Lillie Johnson, Tucker Albert Johnson and John Loftin (Jack) Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Katherine Adelaide Johnson, Josephine Kendrick Johnson, James Edward Johnson III, Samuel Capers Carrington and Frances Adelaide Carrington.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church, where she was assistant organist and president of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Lillie Kinard Johnson Sunday School Class for more than 60 years. Mrs. Johnson was a charter member (1937) and past president of the Liberty Woman’s Club, Regent of the Fort Prince George Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Crescent Music Club in Greenville, where she was a recipient of the “Rose Fay Thomas” award.

Mrs. Johnson enjoyed bridge and for more than 60 years was a member of the Thursday afternoon bridge club. For 62 years she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, faithfully selling poppies each Memorial Day.

Her family especially extends their deep and heartfelt appreciation to Ann Merritt for her loving care and friendship over the past 10 years.

Funeral services were held July 28 at Liberty United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Goldston. A graveside burial service followed at Westview Cemetery in Liberty.

Pallbearers were the Honorable Kinard Johnson Jr., James E. Johnson Jr., Michael A. Johnson Jr., Tucker A. Johnson, John L. (Jack) Johnson and Jennings Farr.

Calvin C. Duncan

Easley — Mr. Calvin Coolidge Duncan, 89, husband of Ruth Richardson Duncan, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late E.S. and Hattie Nix Duncan, Mr. Duncan retired from South Atlantic Insurance and was a member of Geer Memorial Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 46 years, are a son, Ronnie Lee Duncan of Rosman, N.C.; four daughters, Gayle D. Gilstrap (Kenneth) of Liberty, Patricia D. Townsend of Lincolnton, Ga., Carolyn D. Dodson (Phil) of Rosman, N.C., and Sherri D. Duncan of Brevard, N.C.; two sisters, Frances Green of Pickens and Eloise Haire of Rock Hill; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Duncan was predeceased by eight brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held July 27 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with the Rev. Phil McAlister officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Dorsey Edward Greer Sr.

Easley — Dorsey Edward Greer Sr., 80, died Sunday, July 30, 2017, at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Easley on April 8, 1937, he was the son of the late Dorcey Alexander Greer and Edna Brown Greer. A lifelong resident of Easley, Dorsey graduated from Easley High School in 1956. He was a former textile league baseball player with Glenwood Mill.
Dorsey was employed with Hoescht Celanese for 26 years. He continued his textile career with Hurley and Harrison for 15 years before retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Brown Greer; his children, Eddie Greer and his wife, Pam, Katrena Greer Wilkie and Alex Greer and his wife, Christy; his grandchildren, Charlie Greer (Maggie); Jake Greer and fiancée Tori Bethay; Hadley Greer; Lexi Greer; and Greer Wilkie; and a special family friend, Jan Hice.

Dorsey was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Jane Ann Greer. He was also predeceased by his best friend and greatest dog ever, Archie.

Memorial services were held Aug. 1 at the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road.

Lloyd William Maddrey Jr.

Pickens — Lloyd William Maddrey Jr., 77, went to be with his Lord on Thursday July 27, 2017.

He is the husband of Linda Paxton Maddrey and the son of the late Lloyd William Maddrey Sr. and Ola Gardner Maddrey.

Mr. Maddrey retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital as a lab tech supervisor and was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years; one son, Lance William Perry Maddrey and his fiancé, Linda, of Pickens; two grandchildren, William Hunter Maddrey of Seneca and Jesse Lance Maddrey of Piedmont; a great-grandchild, Jeremy Wells of Piedmont; and a stepgranddaughter, Paige Nash of Pickens.

Jesse B. Evatte

Pickens — Jesse B. Evatte, 80, the husband of Sybil P. Evatte, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Mr. Evatte was born in Pickens County, the son of the late Bruce and Dora Marie Evette.

Survivors include one son, Derek Evatt (Angie) of Fort Mill; and two daughters, Donna Froggatt (Peter) of Easley and Melinda Kay Davis (Mark) of Powdersville; eight grandchildren, Rachel Davis Horton (Anthony), Morgan Davis, Natalie Davis, Joshua Froggatt, Hannah Evatt, Wesley Evatt, Jacob Evatt and Taylor Evatt; and two sisters, Bethel Hudson (Charles) and Ruby Smith (Bob).

Mr. Evatte was predeceased by both parents, as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Ethel Smith (Jim).

A visitation was held July 28 at Dillard Funeral Home, with a chapel service following. Burial was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Darthy Scurlock

Pickens — Darthy Ann Wood Scurlock, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Mrs. Scurlock was born in Euporia, Miss., a daughter of the late Charlie B. Wood and the late Nan Wood Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of Saluda Hill Baptist Church and also attended Pickens Church of God.

Survivors include daughters, Vivian Foster Brown and husband, David, of Pickens; Cecile Petitt and husband, George, of Greenville; Karen Johnson and husband, Dale, of Piedmont; Patty Hix and husband, Chris, of Columbia; and an adopted daughter, Anne Karanja. Also surviving is her sister, Charlsie Santana of San Diego, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held July 29 at Saluda Hill Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Millicent Brandt Bigham Owens

Easley — Millicent Brandt Bigham Owens, 89, of Easley, wife of the late Bennie P. Bigham, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Reuben and Maybelle Bridges Brandt. Mrs. Owens was retired from Engineered Custom Plastics. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and The Prayer Warriors.

Surviving are a son, Tony Bigham (Carol) of Liberty; grandchildren, Daren Bigham (Heather) and Dillon Bigham (Morgan Graft); great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Maria and Bradley; and a sister, Miriam Phillips of Powdersville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Maurice Brandt.

Funeral services were held on July 31 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Barbara Reeves Watson

Pickens — Barbara Reeves Watson, 87, wife for 44 years of Thomas A. Watson, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

She was born on Jan. 26, 1930, in the Big Eastatoee Valley of Pickens County to parents Claude H. and Velma Aiken Reeves, both of whom are deceased.

She was also predeceased by one brother, Gerald Reeves; her daughter, Natasha A. Reeves; and her first husband, A.J. Reeves. She is survived by siblings Earl Reeves (Margie) of Sunset; Roy Reeves (Carol) of Westport, Ore.; Harold Reeves (Katina) of Athens, Greece; Dorothy Ziak of Knappa, Ore.; Carol Brubaker (Jerry) of Westport, Ore.; Jan Olsen of Richland, Wash.; and Sharon Reeves of Forrest Grove, Ore. Barbara spent her entire working career as a professional secretary, retiring in 1992.

Her husband Thomas (Tom) would like to express his grateful appreciation for the unbelievable support and care that was given to Barbara while battling with Alzheimer’s disease. Her caregivers included Wendy, Brian, Daniel, Andrew and Philip Watson; Tammie, Shane, Sallie Marie and Lance Watson; Alex Kay; Justin Kay; Earl and Margie Reeves; Steuart and Tonya Watson; Jackie, Kathy, and Leslie Adams; Johnnie Marie and Henry Watson, and Mrs. Sylvia Riggins. Tom would also like to express his gratitude to the entire team of Hospice Care of South Carolina. This organization can only be described as the most professional, caring and efficient health care unit that he has ever encountered.

The funeral service was held Saturday, July 29, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown in Easley, conducted by family member the Rev. Tommy Hayes, with eulogy by Steuart Watson. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Curtis R. Smith

Liberty — Mr. Curtis R. Smith, 78, devoted husband of 50 years to the late Irma Eastep Smith, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017, in Pickens County.

Curtis was born Dec. 21, 1938, to the late J.T. and Vivian Elrod Smith. He grew up in Pendleton and graduated from Boys High School in Anderson. He earned a living as an accountant, but his daily occupation was enjoying and appreciating God’s precious gift of life and caring for his family. His deep love for his wife was demonstrated by the special care he provided throughout the declining years of her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Curtis truly never met a stranger and enjoyed a good conversation sprinkled with laughter more than anything else. Always with a book close at hand, he had a lifelong curiosity and desire to learn about all things.

In addition to his wife and parents, Curtis was predeceased by a brother, Donald Smith, and he will be sorely missed by his children, Mark Smith (Sandie) of Taylors, Denise Stewart (Sammy) and Rita Watts, all of Liberty; grandchildren, Brian, Matthew and Ben Smith, Todd and Craig Stewart, Megan Dillashaw, Tyler and Courtney Watts; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held July 30 at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

Easley — Mr. Charles Kelsey Williams Sr., 75, husband of the late Carolyn Elaine McCoy Williams, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at his home.

Born in Rogersville, Tenn., a son of the late Kelsey and Mary Williams, Mr. Williams retired from the Commercial Insulation Industry and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are three sons, Charles K. Williams Jr. of Easley, Troy E. Williams (Jennifer) of Powdersville, and Randy L. Williams and his wife, Amanda, of Easley; two daughters, Tracie Smith (Nick) and Kimberly Ann McAlister, all of Easley; a brother, Frank Williams of Bells Gap, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Williams was predeceased by one brother, two sisters and a son-in-law, Mike Smith Jr.

Betty Lou Hershberger

Pickens — Betty Lou Hershberger, 59, wife of Ray Hershberger, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

She is the daughter of Emma Wengerd Masters and the late William Masters Sr.

Mrs. Hershberger is a member of Fair Play Community Chapel in Fair Play.

She is survived by her husband, Ray; two sons, Chad Hershberger and his wife, Angel, of Pickens, and Nate Hershberger and his wife, Briana; three sisters, Patty Sommers and her husband, Dave, of Abbeville, Connie Masters of Anderson, and Cindy Hershberger and her husband, Dwayne, of Hillsville, Va., and four grandchildren, Emma Hershberger, Paige Hershberger, Briley Hershberger and Adley Hershberger, all of Pickens. Mrs. Hershberger is predeceased by a brother, William Edward Masters Jr.

A visitation was held Friday, July 28, at Dillard Funeral Home. Services were held Saturday, July 29, at Earles Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed at Fair Play Community Chapel.

Donald Lewis Bryant

Easley — Donald Lewis Bryant, 71, husband to Hazel Granger Bryant, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Franklin D. Bryant and Sue Barber Bryant Oates.

In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Bryant is survived by a son, Roger Bryant of Easley; daughter, Jennifer Kelley (John) of Liberty; brothers, James Bryant (Jean) of Easley, Richard Bryant of Easley, Robert Bryant (Tracy) of Friendswood, Texas, and John Oates (Marge) of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Janie Moore and Cindy Oates of Easley; and grandchildren, Autumn Bryant, Kyle Bryant, Avery Bryant, Preston Kelley and Coleman Kelley

Along with his parents, Mr. Bryant was predeceased by a brother, Robert Wayne Bryant; stepfather, John E. Oates; and a daughter-in-law, Erin Snyder Bryant .

He attended Victory Baptist Church in Easley and retired from General Electric.

Mr. Bryant proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Robinson Memorial Gardens.
