Lois Brown Martin

EASLEY — Mrs. Lois Brown Martin, 85, of 113 Momart Drive, Easley (Dacusville community), wife of the late Edgar M. Martin Sr., passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at Manna Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Pickens.

Born in Dacusville, the daughter of the late James Roy and Carrie Stroud Brown, Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Dacusville High School and a homemaker. She was a faithful member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church, which she loved dearly, and was a member of the Etta Lesley Sunday School Class.

Surviving are three sons, Mike Martin (Judy) of Liberty, Charlie Martin (Carol) of Dacusville and Larry A. Martin (Susan) of Pickens; a daughter, Debbie M. Morris (Randy) of Dacusville; a brother, James Roy Brown of Dacusville; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Dec. 2 at the Blue Ridge View Baptist Church cemetery in Pickens, with Rev. Dr. Stuart Houston and Rev. H.C. Couch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Blue Ridge View Baptist Church Building Fund, 745 Wolf Creek Road, Pickens, SC 29671.

Larry Atkinson

CLEMSON — Lawrence Frierson (Larry) Atkinson died on Dec. 1 in Clemson.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1946, in Anderson to Aldrich and Catherine Dubose Atkinson, and lived almost all of his life in Clemson. He retired from Duke Energy after a long and fulfilling career, primarily at Oconee Nuclear Station. Larry loved life, history, Spitoono, the RPAA, reading, music, the Esso Club and Clemson football. He was always genuine and incredibly generous. He brought laughter and great stories to everyone he met, and he never met a stranger.

He leaves behind his beloved partner and best friend, Jeanne Briggs of Clemson; his son Robert A. Atkinson of Seneca; Jeanne’s daughter, Rachel V. Briggs of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two brothers, Joseph J. Atkinson (Sandy) of Seneca and Aldrich A. Atkinson Jr. (Sandy) of Panama City, Fla.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Becky and Cathy Atkinson.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held in early 2018. Memorials may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, local Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.

Lloyd Henry Johnson

LIBERTY — Lloyd Henry Johnson, 69, husband of Dorothy Ann Johnson, passed away at his home Saturday Dec. 2, 2017.

Mr. Johnson is the son of the late Ralph D. Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson.

Mr. Johnson attended Croswell Apostolic Church in Easley for almost 30 years, owned Johnson Septic Service and loved his family.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years; two sons, Scott Johnson (Cynthia) and Timmy Johnson of Liberty; two daughters, Shaunna Green of Liberty and Crystal Broome (Chris); one brother, J.T. Johnson (Jeannette); and two sisters, Mary Johnson and Ellen Johnson, both of West Union. Mr. Johnson also leaves seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren to share in his memory.

A visitation will be held from 12-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Dillard Funeral Home. Service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Calvin Gerroy Hendrix

PUMPKINTOWN — Calvin G. Hendrix, 69, husband of Jean Ann McCullough Hendrix, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital in downtown Greenville.

Born in Pickens County, a son of Louise Barker Hendrix of Pumpkintown and the late Gerroy Hendrix, Mr. Hendrix was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired from Milliken with 33 years of service. Mr. Hendrix was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Ann, of 26 years of the home, his mother, two sons and six daughters, JJ Hendrix, Kristen Isbell (Ryan), Nancy Lee (Josh), Ashley Shock, Rachel Cochran (Stephen), Steven Shock (Alicia), Cathy Shelton and Mistie Miller (Brian); eight grandchildren, Kayla Jamatte (Dom) of New Castle, Del., Amelia Shock, Savannah Shelton, Bryant Lee, Conner Lee, Leagan Lee, Whitley Isbell and Aubrie Isbell; a great-grandchild, Anne Jamatte; five brothers, Don Hendrix (Martha), Ray Hendrix, Harold Hendrix (Frances) Tim Hendrix and Lewis Hendrix (Diane).

Mr. Hendrix was predeceased by his father and a brother, L.C. Hendrix.

Visitation will be from 1-1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Buck Sexton

EASLEY — Winfred Kenneth “Buck” Sexton, 84, of Thomas Mill Road, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017.

Born in Cateechee, he was a son of the late Clifton and Betty Rena Martin “Pet” Sexton.

Buck was retired, as a plant engineer, from the Ford Motor Company in Norfolk, Va. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and later in life raised Santa Gertrudis cattle. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and a past member of the Beekeepers Association. Buck was a decorated veteran and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Surviving are the love of his life for 64 years, Dorothy Jean Brown Sexton; a daughter, Vicki Jean Porter (David) of Easley; grandchildren, Will Clark and Casey Jo Hitt; and a brother, Buddy Sexton of Liberty.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Elrod and Eloise Willhoite; and brothers, Sam, Casey and Nig Sexton.

Funeral services were held Dec. 5 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with burial following in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church cemetery.

Flowers will be accepted.

Pallbearers were the descendants of Buck’s brothers, Stan, Woody, Gene, Jimmy, Phil and Don Sexton.

Sidney Louis Buckley

EASLEY — Dr. Sidney Louis Buckley, 81, entered his heavenly home Friday morning, Dec. 1, 2017, with his devoted wife, Virginia Willoughby Buckley, by his side.

They served the Lord in ministry together for 58 years.

Born in Columbia, Miss., he was the son of the late Rev. Porter W. Buckley and Erma McCraw Buckley. Dr. Buckley was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School, graduate of Pearl River Junior College, graduate of William Carey College; earned his master’s degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and earned his Ph.D. in vocal performance from Florida State University. Dr. Buckley began his dedicated and long career in music ministry when he was licensed as a music minister when he was 13 years old at his home church of Goss Baptist Church in Columbia, Miss.

After earning his Ph.D. at Florida State, Dr. Buckley and his family moved to South Carolina in 1967, where he became director of opera at Furman University and the music director at First Baptist Church in Easley. After serving on the Furman faculty for six years, he was then selected as the head of the music department at Central Wesleyan College and was instrumental in helping the college receive its formal accreditation. Later in his career, he served as the chair of the music department at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

In addition to serving other churches, Dr Buckley also traveled throughout the United States performing in many operas, being featured soloist and conductor in a vast array of musical venues such as theatrical, community choral and symphonic productions, Southern Baptist Conventions, Ridgecrest and Glorietta Baptist Centers as well as serving as a full time music evangelist, traveling throughout the Southeast sharing his testimony in song by singing concerts in hundreds of churches.

Even though Dr. Buckley was passionate about his musical calling and following wherever the Lord led him, he was happiest at home, where he and Mrs. Buckley raised their family on a hill among the rolling countryside outside of Easley. Here, he enjoyed his favorite pastimes of hunting, having horses and cows, gardening and just spending time with family.

In addition to his wife, Virginia, he was survived by daughters, Susan (Al) Cumbie of Walhalla and Sara (Brad) Griffith of Liberty; sons, Sid (Annette) Buckley of Greer and Seth (Robin) Buckley of Moore; brother, Tim Buckley of Columbia, Miss.; sister, Marion Wilks of Columbia, Miss; nine grandchildren, Benjamin (Tiffany) Beaver, Luke (Eileen) Beaver, Jacob (Sloane) Buckley, Rebecca (Seth Hooper), Caleb Buckley, Eli Buckley, Micah Buckley, Victoria Buckley and Doris Emily Buckley; and six great-grandchildren, Drake Beaver, Emmy Beaver, Wren Beaver, Teagan Beaver, Porter Hooper and Jackson Hooper.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Virginia Hope Buckley, and two sisters, Doris Ramshur and Barbara Taylor.

The service of celebration for Dr. Buckley’s life will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 6, at First Baptist Church Easley, with the Rev John Adams officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m.-noon in the narthex of the church.

A private family committal service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Pickens.
