James Edward Hendricks

PICKENS — James Edward Hendricks, 85, husband of the late Edna Aiken Hendricks and Doris Gantt Hendricks, passed from this life on Friday, May 18, 2018.

Mr. Hendricks was born in Rosman, N.C., a son of the late Carl and Myrtie Morgan Hendricks. He was retired from Brunswick Yarns and later from Teleflex Fluid Systems, and he was a past member of Old Toxaway Baptist Church and attended Rice’s Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Linda Nations (Larry Hahn) of Greenville, Susie Sutherland (Preston) of Six Mile and Cathy Young (Bobby) of Six Mile, seven grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Amos Hendricks of Penrose, N.C., and Carl Hendricks of Rosman, N.C.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Hendricks was preceded in death by sons, Otis and Dean Hendricks, and infant son, Douglas, and a brother, Robert Hendricks.

Services were held May 20 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, with burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Shirley G. Jarvis

EASLEY — Mrs. Shirley Gwendolyn Stewart Jarvis, 88, wife of the late Keith Alan Jarvis, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at her home.

Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, a daughter of the late Thomas Baxter Stewart and the late Ruby Jean Shrubb Stewart, Mrs. Jarvis was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a son, Larry Jarvis (Rena) of Cottondale, Ala.; two daughters, Audrey Kuykendall (Dennis) of Easley and Lynn Lapan (Steve) of Lafargeville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Jarvis was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Ann Sillars, two brothers and three sisters.

Family members are at their respective homes.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Kay Moore

EASLEY — Jacqueline “Jackie” Kay Moore, of 1845 Powdersville Road, went home to be with the Lord and her Momma, Mona Louise Johnston Moore, on May 15, 2018.

Jackie is survived by her father, 1SG (Ret.) Lee R. Moore; her sister, Terry (David) Spearman; her nieces, Heather (Austin) Knapik and Jennifer (Chad) Lee; her nephew, Christopher Spearman; her great niece, Emalee Moore; and her great nephews, Cal and Cannon Lee.

Jackie was born in Fort Lewis, Wash., on Jan. 22, 1959, and moved all around the United States and to Germany while her father was in the U.S. Army. She graduated from Easley High School in 1977 and worked as assistant manager at Friedman’s Jewelers much of her adult life until health issues forced her to stop in 2008. Due to her outgoing personality and generous spirit, Jackie was always loved by her coworkers and customers.

Jackie and her sister, Terry, relied on one another as the Army brats moved frequently and friendships were short lived. Because of this, Jackie considered Terry’s children her “babies.”

Growing up, Heather, Jennifer and Christopher had a playful, silly “Auntie Jah-ckie” to cut up with, then once the next generation was born, Jackie adored her great niece and great nephews, and spoiled them ridiculously. We will always remember Jackie as the wise-cracking, fun-loving, field trip chaperoning, nickname-calling life of the party that always had a surprise for the kids and a story for the adults. She was loved by her many cousins, aunts, and uncles for her funny ways and endearing spirit.

Jackie was cared for by an incredible group of skilled professionals at Mountain Home Health and Rehab in Hendersonville, N.C., over the past nine months. These caregivers loved Jackie like she was their family, and she loved them. Even more special was her relationship with her roommate, Mrs. Sandra Ballenger. Jackie’s family deeply appreciates the care from the staff at Mountain Home and the friendship of Mrs. Ballenger. Words cannot express what they did for our Jackie.

Graveside services were held May 19 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

Vernon Rathburn

EASLEY — James Vernon Rathburn, 92, of Joan Drive, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior and his beloved wife, India Smith Rathburn, on Sunday, May 13, 2018, following a brief illness.

Mr. Rathburn was a faithful member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, the Disciples for Christ Sunday School Class, and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He retired from E.I. DuPont in Wilmington, N.C. He and his wife were dedicated Christians, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through music.

Born in Yancey County, N.C., he was a son of the late Reggie and Laura Ogle Rathburn.

Surviving are his children, Joanie R. Scruggs (Terry) of Easley and Dean Rathburn (Allyson) of Leland, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Pepper Rathburn of Leland, N.C.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two special nieces, Doris Wheeler and Phyllis Ray, both of Burnsville, N.C.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, he was predeceased by a son, Reggie W. Rathburn Sr.; a sister, Madge McMahan; and brothers, Carl and Earl Rathburn.

A service to celebrate Mr. Rathburn’s life was held May 18 at Rock Springs Baptist Church, with burial following in Robinson Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Mamie Lee Dorsey

NORRIS — Mamie Lee Bryant Dorsey, 100, of 517 N. Norris Drive, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Pruitt Health and Rehab in Six Mile.

Born in Pickens County, she was the widow of J.W. Dorsey and a daughter of the late Chesley McDaniel and Cora Henderson Bryant.

Mrs. Dorsey retired from Woodside Mills and later owned and operated Dorsey’s Restaurant for several years. She later worked and volunteered at Liberty Seniors Unlimited until she was 94 years old.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Norris.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Zorn of Cateechee; two special nieces, Ginger Haynes (Don) of Norris and Jerry Tate of West Union; and a grandson-in-law, Jeff Kelley (Cindy). Also surviving are numerous other nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Eula Mae Howe, a son-in-law, J.D. Howe, and a granddaughter, Sherry Kelley.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Dorsey were held May 19 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel, with burial following at Liberty Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to First Baptist Church of Norris, Building Fund, P.O. Box 130, Norris SC 29667.

Liberty Canales Rabanes Davis

SIX MILE — Liberty Canales Rabanes Davis of Davao City, Philippines, passed away on the morning of Friday, May 11, at her home in Six Mile after a very lengthy illness.

Ms. Davis lost her brave battle with cancer only six days following her 48 birthday.

She is survived by her 15-year-old daughter, Adrienna Caroline, and her husband of 16 years, Roger Dale Davis, both of the home.

Best known for her warm smile and ability to make friends, Liberty was employed for 13 and a half years at Cornell Dubilier in Liberty. She also enjoyed working outside during the summer, taking much pride in growing beautiful plants and flowers in the yard.

Mrs. Davis graduated from the University of Mindanao in 1991, earning a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree. She attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pickens, as well as United Wesleyan Church in Easley, where her daughter takes piano lessons and frequently participates in musical events at the church.

Liberty is the daughter of the late Vicenta Canales Rabanes and Nemisio Rabanes, also deceased. She is also survived by two brothers, Roel Rabanes of Greenville and Armand Rabanes, currently a resident of the Western Asian country of Qatar, bordering Saudi Arabia. Liberty has two sisters, Antonita Rea of Spartanburg and Rowena Rabanes of the Philippines.

Liberty worked very hard to take care of her family, employed with two companies for much of 2017, unaware of the progression of her deadly illness. She kept her sister and husband smiling from time to time almost until the final hour of her life. Despite the seriousness of her condition, Liberty found humor in things even on the eve of her passing. She will be missed tremendously by all of those whose lives she touched during her much too brief time on earth.

Funeral services were held May 19 at United Wesleyan Church in Easley, led by Pastor Tim Jones, with a number of other speakers contributing to the service and burial following in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

John Edward Gilstrap

EASLEY — Mr. John Edward Gilstrap, 74, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Lewis and Mattie Childress Gilstrap, Mr. Gilstrap was a retired machinist and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Gerald L. Gilstrap Sr. and his wife, Martha, of Easley.

Funeral services were held May 21 at Cross Roads Baptist Church, with Rev. Phil Henry officiating and burial following in the church cemetery.

Beatrice Hinton

EASLEY — Beatrice Sprouse Hinton, 83, widow of Jack LaRue Hinton Sr., passed from this life on Wednesday May 16, 2018.

Mrs. Hinton was born in Fayette County, W.Va. a daughter of the late George Washington Sprouse and the late Annie Virginia Prather Sprouse. She was retired from Indiana Bell as a telephone operator and she was a member of West End Baptist Church in Easley. After moving to Easley with her husband, she worked for several years at T.C. Bearie’s Hallmark Store. An avid gardener, Mrs. Hinton was always ready and able to lend advice about plants and their requirements. She enjoyed reading her Bible and duplicate stitching sweaters.

Survivors include daughters, Wilma Jacqueline Howlett of Jacksonville, Fla., and Delores Ann DeSantis of Charlestown, R.I., and a son, Jack L. Hinton Jr. of Greenville. Also surviving are five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and a brother, Jesse Sprouse of Brunswick, Ohio.

Services were held May 21 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel.

Ronnie Campbell

MARIETTA — Ronald Eugene “Ronnie” Campbell, 70, husband of Jeannette Pennington Campbell, passed from this life on Thursday May 17, 2018, at his home.

Ronnie was born in Greenville County, a son of the late Garrell and Bertie Adams Campbell. He was a retired truck driver, having worked for G&P and Metromont Materials. Ronnie was a member of NewSpring Church.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jeannette; sons, Ronald Eugene “Gene” Campbell (Candie) of Taylors, Garrell Dean “Dino” Campbell (Waynette) of Marietta and Matthew Scott “Scotty” Campbell (Michelle) of Greenville; and a daughter, Missy Rick (Derek) of Easley. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister, Janet Doffy of Greenville. He is also survived by his furry baby, Janie Belle.

Services were held May 18 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Andrea B. Chavous

PICKENS — Andrea B. Chavous, 63, beloved wife of Carroll Chavous, went to her heavenly home, Monday, May 14, 2018.

Mrs. Chavous was born in Queens, N.Y., a daughter of the late Audrey Jobin Bennett and Leo Maurice Bennett. She was a member of Gap Hill Church of God and co-owner, operator and heart and soul of Twelve Mile Community Grocery. She shared her love in the spirit of Jesus Christ with each and every friend that entered through her door.

Survived by her loving husband and best friend of 48 years, Carroll Chavous, she was the devoted mother of seven children, including four sons, Chris Chavous and fiancé Shannon Dover of Liberty, Burnice Chavous (Karrie) of Pickens, LTC Jonathan Chavous (Sally) of DeRidder, La., and Aaron Chavous of Aiken; and three daughters, Audrey Keith (Chad) of Six Mile, Adrianne Chavous of Goose Creek and Amanda Chavous of Goose Creek. She was the adoring Grammy to seven grandchildren, Daniel Chavous (Casey), Michael Chavous, Andrea Will (Dakota), Carolina Grace Chavous, Jackson Keith, Carolina Elizabeth Keith and Joseph Benjamin Chavous. She had one great-grandchild, Collin Ryan Waters, and one sister, Audrey Weed of Archer, Fla.

Her parents, Audrey Jobin Bennett and Leo Maurice Bennett, predeceased her, as well as three brothers, Al, Michael and Lee.

Services were held May 19 in the Gap Hill Church of God sanctuary, with burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

PICKENS — Richard Hovie Stephens, 72, of Pickens, passed from this life on Friday May 18, 2018.

Richard was born in Greenville County, a son of the late Hovie and Helen Lewis Stephens. He was a member of Secona Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Brenda Stewart (Phillip) of Easley, a brother, Tommy Stephens (Betty) of Pickens, and nieces, Crystal Chandler (Brad), Leslie Bailey (Travis) and Bart Stephens (Kristy).

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by brothers, Jerry Stephens and Lewis Stephens.

Peggy Mahoney

EASLEY — Peggy Annette Bearden Mahoney, 67, of Dearborn Lane, died Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., she was the wife of Porter D. Mahoney Jr. and a daughter of the late Frank and Lucille Dockery Bearden. She was a retired EMT and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Dale Mahoney of Westminster and Kelly Mahoney (Shelly) of Easley; a sister, Carol Foreman of Gaffney; five grandchildren, Andie, Chris, Matt, Eli and Laila Mahoney; and one great-grandchild, Dakota Mahoney.

Private graveside services will be held at Liberty Memorial Gardens. No visitation is planned. The family members will be at their respective homes.

Ida Katherine Allgood Westbrook

PICKENS — Ida Katherine Allgood Westbrook, 83, of Blacksnake Road in Pickens, died peacefully on May 16, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on March 13, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Joel I. and Kate Holder Allgood.

Ida Katherine Allgood attended and graduated from Pickens High School in 1953.

Her gregarious and positive spirit during her years as a student at Pickens High School was reflected during her time spent as a cheerleader rooting on her Pickens Blue Flame.

Her passion for sports and love for Pickens High continued throughout her life, as she supported her grandchildren during their years as both athletes and coaches. Ida retired from Alice Manufacturing and Banker’s Trust, where she worked for more than 20 years. She was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church and was a member of the adult choir for many years. She was an avid fan of the University of South Carolina and loved talking sports with anybody who understood the game. She enjoyed reading, interior decorating, watching sports and spending time with her family. Ida lived out the command of Jesus in Matthew 25:40 in her daily testimony; the legacy of her selfless spirit and compassion for others will live on through all she influenced. Known affectionately by her family as “Idaga,” “Nana,” and “Nano,” she served as the epitome of a Southern lady by exuding class and style in every facet of her life.

She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Joel E. Allgood, a beloved uncle and aunt, W.T. and Elizabeth “Lib” Metts, and a special grand-dog, Holtz.

Ida is survived by her husband of 63 years, Edward Jean Westbrook, her two daughters, Libby Westbrook Fisher (Lynn) and Jeannie Westbrook Abercrombie (Chuck), four grandchildren, Dr. Ashley Fisher Butler (Stan), Joshua Fisher, Zachary Abercrombie and Stephanie Abercrombie, the “lights of her life,” her two great-grandchildren, Anslie Kate Abercrombie and Westian Carter Abercrombie, a sister-in-law, Evelyn Allgood, a nephew, Eddie Allgood (Debbie), and a niece, Elaine Cauthen (Rex).

Carol K. Turner

LIBERTY — Carol K. Turner, 72, passed from this life Friday, May 18, 2018, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Carol is a daughter of the late Clarence Stubblefield and the late Carrie Deaton Ramey and was a member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church, where she had a special love for her church family.

Survivors include her children, Vince Brooks of Liberty, Jimmy Ray Dickard of Oconee County, Amanda (Ritchie) Thomas of Liberty and Timothy (Jennifer Moody Dickard) of Easley; grandchildren, Nathan Farmer Jr., Amber Michelle Blackwell, Breanna Marie Thomas, Dakota Elan Thomas, Hannah Brooks, Chasity Turner and Jasper Youngblood; great-grandchildren; Caeden Turner and Ava Thomas; sisters, Virginia Porter and Ruth Cannon; and a brother, Don Stubblefield.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, a granddaughter, Amber Bowen, and a sister, Betty Sue Stubblefield.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Cedar Rock Baptist Church.

Muriel Boyd Bishop

CENTRAL — Muriel Boyd Bishop, 89, wife of Carl Barnes Bishop, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2018.

Mrs. Bishop was born in Billingsley, Ala., a daughter of the late Joseph and Lelia Mae Taylor Boyd. She was a chemistry professor at Clemson University for many years. She also was a past president of the Clemson Lions Club. She was active in her church, serving on various committees and the choir and teaching a ladies Sunday school class.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bishop was predeceased by a brother, Bernard Boyd. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Barnes; a daughter, Kathryn Bishop Setzer of Denver, N.C.; a brother, Harold Boyd (Peggy) of Rome, Ga.; two grandchildren, Zachary Randall Setzer and Shannon Kathryn Setzer; two step-grandchildren, Rhonda Nicole Blake and Joshua Edwin Setzer; one great-grandchild, Avery Elizabeth Setzer; and six step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the First Baptist Church of Clemson. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Dorothy Ann Dodgens

PICKENS — Dorothy A. Dodgens, 78, passed from this life, Saturday, May 19, 2018, at her home.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Hayward Holcombe and the late Margaret Ann Gillespie Holcombe. Mrs. Dodgens was a homemaker and a member of Carolina Community Church and devoted her time to the food bank and being a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her children, Michael O. Richard of Seneca, Edward Dean Richard of Easley, Anita Ann (Jack) Simpson of Pickens and Nicky Lee Dodgens of Pickens; grandchildren, Barbara (Eric) Mason, Josh Richard, Dustin Mike Richard, Roger Lee Richard, Brianna Jones, Breanna Capps (Andrew Newsome) and Hailee Dodgens; a great-grandchild, Carter Newsome; a brother, Tom Holcombe; and a first cousin, Sam Holcombe.

Mrs. Dodgens was predeceased by her parents, two husbands, Franklin Otis Richard and William Larry Dodgens, and a sister, Patsy Holcombe.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until noon Thursday, May 24, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow at noon, officiated by Rev. Dr. Joe Ferry. Burial will be at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery.
