Alice Owens

EASLEY — Mary Alice S. Owens, 72, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2018.

Born in Orangeburg, a daughter of the late Hugh Dent Spivey and the late Ruth Nunn Burrell, she was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed reading, music and crafts.

Mrs. Owens was a member of Bessie Road Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Rick Chapman (Maria) of Van Nuys, Calif., Tommy Owens of Pelzer and Carl Owens (Amy) of Pickens; and grandchildren, Steven Langford, Jacob Owens, Amelia Owens, Caleb Owens, Asher Owens and Andrew Owens.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her stepfather, Benny Burrell, and a sister, Vivian Spivey.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at

the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road. Burial will follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Activities Department of Capstone Health and Rehab of Easley, 1850 Crestview Road, Easley, SC 29642.

Catherine McAlister

PICKENS — Catherine Evans McAlister, 78, of Pickens, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2018.

Catherine was born in Pickens to the late Etta Caroline Lee Sutherland and James Benjamin Sutherland.

Catherine is survived by her son, Gary Evans; daughters, Peggy Evans, Linda Mitchell and Sheila Anthony; daughter-in-law, Melissa Evans; son-in-law, Ernest Mitchell; and brothers, Robert Sutherland (Betty Lee) and Elmer Sutherland. She also leaves nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren to share in her memory.

Catherine was preceded in death by her spouse, Lee McAlister; previous husband, Buddy Evans; father, James Benjamin Sutherland; mother, Etta Caroline Lee Sutherland; and two sons, Randy Evans and Larry Evans. She was also predeceased by four brothers and six sisters.

A funeral service was held June 12 in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed at Mt. Grove Baptist Church in Pickens.

Dedrick Frank Collins

SIX MILE — Mr. Dedrick Frank Collins, 80, husband of the late Peggy Collins, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late George Collins and Nellie Mae Moore Brake, Mr. Collins was a retired supervisor with Cone Brothers Asplalt Company and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Angela G. Arnold (Carlton) of Six Mile; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Collins was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Ken Brooks

EASLEY — Lewis Kenneth Brooks, 78, husband of Shelby Jean Dove Brooks, passed from this life on Sunday June 10, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Ken was born in Pickens County, son of the late Albert and Sadie Simpson Brooks. He retired as a supervisor at Franklin Dyed Yarns in Greenville and he was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church. In his earlier days, Ken enjoyed league bowling.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Shelby Jean Brooks of the home; daughters, Linda Patterson (Gary), Debbie Crum (Charles) and Sharon Teat (Robert), all of Easley, and Vicki Simpson of Pickens; and a son, Jimmy Brooks (Tina) of Dacusville. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

The funeral will take place at 3:30 p.m. June 13, in the chapel at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Louise Hawkins

EASLEY — Mrs Mary “Louise” Hawkins, 78, of Easley, went to be with her Lord on Friday, June 8, 2018.

Louise was born Dec. 4, 1939, in Pickens, to Zelma Carson O’Shields and William O’Shields. She was the wife of 53 years to the late Truman Thomas Hawkins Sr.

Louise, who always had a smile on her face and filled the air with her laughter, was a homemaker, caregiver and friend to everyone. She loved children and assisted with the primary Sunday school class at Wayside Baptist Church. She rode her first roller coaster at 77 years young.

Louise is survived by her son, Truman Thomas Hawkins Jr.; daughter-in-law, Sandy Hawkins; daughter, Melinda McAlister; son-in-law, Steve McAlister; son, Sonny Stonewall Hawkins; son, Hank Hiawatha Hawkins Sr.; daughter-in-law, Nancy Hawkins; brother, Daniel O’Shields; sister-in-law, Judy O’Shields; and sister, Irene Hooper. Louise also leaves 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way to share in her memory.

Louise was preceded in death by her father, William O’Shields Jr., and mother, Zelma Carson O’Shields; husband, Truman; brother, Jackson O’Shields; sister, Becky Henderson; grandson, Hank Hawkins Jr.; and special aunt, Betty Mae Ramey.

A funeral service was held June 11 at Blue Ridge View Baptist Church. Burial followed at the Blue Ridge View Baptist Church cemetery.

Cody Hawkins, Hiawatha Hawkins Sr., Stonewall Hawkins, Thomas Hawkins Jr., Brian McAlister and Jason Tollison all served as pallbearers.

Lillian Stewart

SIX MILE — Lillian Murphree Stewart, 90, of Six Mile, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2018, at the Cottingham House in Seneca.

Born in the Prater’s Creek community of Pickens County, she was the daughter of Lucius B. Murphree and Lena Pilgrim Murphree. She was a member of Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday school class.

Surviving are her two sons, Michael Leroy Stewart (Joyce) and Gregory Lynne Stewart (Dayle), both of Six Mile; five grandchildren, Robert Stewart, Sarah Gravely (Richie), Tyler Stewart, Rebekah Nations (Dalton) and Julia Reynolds (Samuel); and three great-grandchildren, Tiffany Gravely, Franklin Stewart and Carolina Nations.

Mrs. Stewart loved her extended family and her Sunday school class.

Funeral services to honor Mrs. Stewart’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

The Gleaners Sunday school class of Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.

Charles T. Holliday

SIX MILE — Charles T. Holliday, 84, died May 28, 2018.

Born in Six Mile, he was the son of the late Pearl Elizabeth Smith and James Luther Holliday.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred K. Holliday, the love of his life through their 66 years of marriage; his three children, Karen Fletcher (Glenn), Phil Holliday (Pam) and Allen Holliday; sisters, Doris Deadwyler (James) of Covington, Ga., and Sarah Clark of Six Mile; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles served in the Navy Seabees during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Trinidad, where his son, Phil, was born. He was a lifetime member of Six Mile Baptist Church where he had served as deacon, R.A. leader, training union director and served as needed in the music ministry — singing in the choir or leading adult and/or youth choirs.

He was an automotive mechanic for more than 65 years and could fix anything brought to him — or invent a way to get it to work. Friends gathered often at his shop and sat around the pot-bellied stove swapping stories as he worked. He often joined in with his own stories and jokes. He was a friend to all, known for his generosity, his memories of the past and his contagious laugh.

He loved gardening and canning, fishing and spending time with family. He was a loving, giving man who will be greatly missed by all.

Special thanks to all who cared for him in the last two years of his life, especially the Open Arms Hospice Group. His nurse, Alana, was a great help and a comfort to him and his family.

Donations in his memory may be made to Open Arms Hospice or to Volunteers in Medical Missions.

Private graveside services for Mr. Holliday were held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Richard Dale Duncan

EASLEY — Richard Dale Duncan, 55, of Easley, husband of Robin Gillespie Duncan, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018.

Born in Greenville on June 1, 1963, he was the son of Charles Wesley and Marean Freeman Duncan.

Rick graduated from Pickens High School in 1981. He joined the U.S. Navy through the delayed entry program and thoroughly enjoyed his time of service. Rick was employed in the quality control department at General Electric. He enjoyed NASCAR and racing his own cars. Rick’s passion, however, was his wife and three grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of 31 years, Robin, Rick is survived by two sons, Drake and wife, Kristin, of Anderson, and Enoch of Marietta; three grandchildren, Kylee, Landan and Sara Duncan; his mother, Marean, of Marietta, Ga.; and his brother, Randy Duncan of Easley.

Olin L. Benjamin Jr.

EASLEY — Olin Lucius Benjamin Jr., 81, of 103 Claremont Court, loving husband for 63 years to Joan Smith Benjamin, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2018.

Born in Easley, a son to the late Olin Lucius and Frances Rives Benjamin, Mr. Benjamin graduated from Easley High School in 1954. He was an Easley city clerk prior to retiring from J.A. Piper Roofing after 30 years of employment. Mr. Benjamin was a faithful member of West Main Street Church of Christ, where he was a song leader. After serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve, Mr. Benjamin served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Denise Jackson (Jimmy) of Greer, Lisa Cassell (Scott) of Pickens and Gina Warren (Stan) of Easley; three brothers, Roger Benjamin of Liberty, Sherrill Benjamin of Chicago and Randall Benjamin of Easley; three sisters, Donna Waldrop and Karen Payne, both of Easley, and Jean Boiter of Liberty; nine grandchildren, Ben Lappin, Blake Jackson, Justin Jackson, Brittney Porter, Devin Jackson, Houston Cassell, Dakota Warren, Keeley Warren and Micah Warren; and three great-grandchildren, James, Aubrey and Hayley Lappin.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Benjamin was predeceased by a brother, Wallace Benjamin.

Funeral services were held June 10 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road. Entombment followed in the Robinson Memorial Gardens Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum.

LIBERTY — Patsy Ann James Chapman, 65, of 110 Norris Ave., passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of Jack James and the late Lorene Shepherd James. She was a homemaker and attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pickens.

Surviving are her husband, Douglas Chapman of the home; three sons, Jackie, Bobby and Richard; two stepsons, Tim and Tommy; two sisters, Marilyn Couch and Judy Owens; a brother, Randy James; also surviving are 10 grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Harold Medlin

EASLEY — Mr. John Harold Medlin, 81, passed away Friday, June 8, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Robert G. and Pauline Brewer Medlin, Mr. Medlin was a graduate of Easley High School and the retired owner of Harold’s Tire. He was of the Baptist faith.

Harold loved to fish and was an avid Clemson Football fan, but most of all he loved his Lord and Savior. He read his Bible daily and loved quoting scripture. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and all who knew him.

Surviving are two sons, Robby Medlin (Cheryl) and Allen Medlin, both of Easley; a daughter, Linda DiComo (Don) of Easley; a brother, Dennis Medlin of Easley; five sisters, Marguerite McCall, Ruth Mauldin, Sarah Blackston and Dottie Ridley, all of Easley, and Judy Albertson of Honea Path; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 10 at Flat Rock Baptist Church, with Rev. Robert Fowler officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
